Which service should you choose?
Choose an exact product and location rather than comparing provider names in the abstract. OVHcloud may suit you if the selected VPS tier’s public bandwidth works for your feed and you prefer its advertised unlimited-traffic model. Hetzner may suit you if the selected Cloud plan’s regional allowance fits your projected egress and you have accounted for overage. Neither published bandwidth terms nor availability commitments establish uninterrupted delivery to YouTube.

For a playlist of already encoded files, the server mainly needs to read, loop and send the media. Real-time transcoding adds CPU demand. Hetzner distinguishes shared-resource instances, where CPU is shared among instances, from dedicated-resource instances with exclusive CPU resources; the dedicated class is the more predictable option for CPU-intensive work. The sources do not provide comparable transcoding benchmarks for either provider, so test your actual workflow rather than assuming a particular plan can encode a resolution or frame rate.

Estimate monthly bandwidth from the stream bitrate
A continuous feed can consume several terabytes each month. For a constant bitrate, estimate decimal terabytes over 30 days as:

These are arithmetic estimates for uninterrupted constant-bitrate video, not provider statistics. Variable bitrate, protocol overhead, reconnects and any other traffic affect actual usage. Compare the estimate with the allowance for the exact plan and monitor measured egress.
YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. For a 6 Mbps primary feed, that means at least 7.2 Mbps available upload capacity for that feed alone, before backup streams or other concurrent traffic. YouTube advises that total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends testing the setup. An advertised provider bandwidth figure does not replace an end-to-end test. Configure the stream and YouTube channel
- Confirm the channel can livestream. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. Follow YouTube policies for the channel and content. YouTube live-streaming eligibility
- Choose the media workflow. If the playlist files are already encoded in the format and profile you intend to send, loop or relay them without transcoding where your software supports it. If you convert them in real time, plan for higher CPU use and benchmark the chosen instance with your real files and settings.
- Set a supported encoder profile. Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate for the source and desired stream, then use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for that profile. - Create and protect the stream key. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and copy its stream key into the encoder running on the VPS. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not publish it in scripts, logs or screenshots; rotate it if exposed.
- Test before leaving it unattended. Start the encoder, verify that YouTube receives the feed, check video and audio, and observe bitrate and server resource use. Test the actual server-to-YouTube route; network disruptions can break a live stream.
- Make recovery operational. Configure the streaming process to restart after failure, monitor whether it is running and whether YouTube is receiving the feed, and set alerts you will notice. A restart policy cannot fix a bad source file, depleted disk, exhausted CPU, network outage or YouTube ingest problem, so test your recovery path.
Understand what availability figures do—and do not—promise
OVHcloud’s VPS FAQ states a 99.9% SLA. Hetzner’s Cloud agreement describes a 99.9% monthly availability effort with contractual qualifications and exclusions. Those provider commitments concern the service under their respective terms; they do not guarantee that the encoder, source media, route to YouTube, YouTube ingest and recovery process all remain healthy for a continuous broadcast.
Build for faults at each layer: the VPS, operating system, media files, encoder process, network path and YouTube ingest. A running process alone is not proof that viewers can see a healthy stream. Verify the live output and use monitoring that can distinguish a server process from a feed YouTube is actually receiving.

Costs and operational trade-offs
Do not label either provider the cheapest without comparing the exact region, plan and billing terms at the time you buy. For Hetzner, include the cost of outbound traffic above the included allowance: its Cloud billing FAQ says overage is charged in 100 MB blocks, and usage notifications do not cap traffic. For OVHcloud, check the chosen VPS tier’s stated public bandwidth and current terms rather than treating “unlimited traffic” as a guarantee of any particular sustained throughput. With either service, include your time for server setup, updates, security, monitoring and recovery when comparing the total cost with a managed alternative.
