If you want a medieval RPG that feels different from the usual high-fantasy quest, start with Darklands. Its version of 15th-century Germany combines real places and period beliefs with folklore, alchemy, and supernatural threats. It is one of several older role-playing games worth rediscovering—but “nobody remembers” is headline shorthand, not a measurable claim.
Why Darklands is the standout historical-fantasy pick
Darklands is a DOS role-playing game released in 1992 by MPS Labs. Ziggurat Interactive describes a party of four adventurers crossing a fantasy version of 15th-century Germany, where mythical creatures exist alongside the religious beliefs and folklore of the era. The publisher calls it “Heroic Adventures in Medieval Germany”—a promotional phrase that captures the game’s unusual blend of history and fantasy.

Rather than sending players through a generic kingdom, the game draws on German cities and regional geography. Ziggurat says its world includes more than 90 cities. A retrospective from Game Developer likewise highlights the historically detailed arms and armor, open-ended goals, alchemical magic, and map of German cities.

- Skill-based characters: Attributes and skills improve over time without conventional artificial classes or character levels, according to the publisher.
- Alchemy instead of standard spellcasting: The game includes alchemical formulas, reinforcing its setting’s mix of practical craft and supernatural belief.
- Pausable real-time combat: Battles unfold in real time, but players can pause to issue orders.
- Party travel: The four-adventurer group travels through the setting rather than remaining in a single hub or dungeon.
The appeal is its specific sense of place and its willingness to make the setting’s history part of the fantasy. The trade-off is age: Game Developer noted bugs and an irritating save system at release. That is a period criticism, not confirmation that every issue remains in current editions. Ziggurat’s official page links to storefronts, but availability, edition, regional access, and compatibility should be checked on the store you intend to use.

More older fantasy RPGs to seek out
If the historical-fantasy angle is not what you want, classic Forgotten Realms games offer a more conventional AD&D fantasy setting. In 2015, PC Gamer reported that GOG had recovered 13 Forgotten Realms games and worked to get them running on modern systems. The feature named these titles:
- Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades, and Pools of Darkness
- Hillsfar and Unlimited Adventures
- The Eye of the Beholder trilogy and Dungeon Hack
- Two Savage Frontier games and Menzoberranzan
That 2015 report is a useful discovery trail, not a guarantee that every game remains listed or works on a particular modern system today. Check current store pages and compatibility details before choosing one.

Gothic II is a different kind of cult RPG
Gothic II is a less historically grounded, more conventional fantasy comparison: its value here is as a cult RPG with a present-day console edition, not as proof that the game itself is obscure. THQ Nordic says Gothic II Complete Classic includes the base game and the Night of the Raven add-on. The publisher advertises more than 100 missions, over 500 NPCs with dialogue and daily routines, branching choices, and more than 200 weapons and spells.

How to choose among these rediscoveries
| Game or group | Setting | What the cited sources establish | What to verify before playing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Darklands | Fantasy version of 15th-century Germany, combining regional history and supernatural beliefs | Four-person party, skill progression without conventional classes or levels, alchemy, and pausable real-time combat | Store availability, edition, regional access, compatibility, and how release-era technical criticisms apply to the edition offered |
| Forgotten Realms games named in the 2015 GOG report | AD&D high fantasy | Thirteen titles were identified in PC Gamer’s report about GOG’s recovery effort | Current listings and compatibility; the report dates to 2015 |
| Gothic II Complete Classic | Fantasy RPG; the cited publisher material does not frame it as a historical setting | Includes Gothic II and Night of the Raven; THQ Nordic advertises its mission, NPC, choice, weapon, and spell counts | Platform and regional store access for the console edition |
For the most distinctively medieval setting, choose Darklands. For a traditional AD&D world, use the Forgotten Realms list as a starting point and confirm what is currently playable. For a cult fantasy RPG with a reported modern console release, consider Gothic II Complete Classic. Older games can be overlooked because of age, flaws, or the timing of their release; PC Gamer makes that broader point in its feature on overlooked RPGs, which also discusses Risen (2009) as an exploration RPG built around a hostile island and faction choice.
