Short answer: Valve’s Steamworks documentation lists Linux PC titles among Steam Frame’s supported execution models, but that does not confirm Linux support for streaming PCVR to the headset through its wireless adapter. A Steam Support response reproduced in a Steam Community discussion in late September 2026 says the adapter currently requires a Windows PC. It names Linux prerequisites for attempts, while also saying SteamVR on Linux is not fully supported.
What Valve’s documentation confirms—and what it does not
Valve describes Steam Frame as a standalone VR headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming from a PC, while also supporting standalone VR and non-VR experiences. Its Steamworks documentation says Steam Frame runs SteamOS and lists both Windows and Linux PC titles among the supported execution models: Valve’s Steam Frame overview for developers.

That is broad platform and product information, not confirmation that every Linux PC can stream PCVR to Steam Frame using its dedicated wireless adapter. “Linux PC titles” describes what may be executed in the broader Steam Frame ecosystem; it should not be read as a blanket statement that Linux is an officially supported host configuration for the adapter.
What the Windows-only statement says
The Windows-only wording comes from a Steam Support response reproduced by a user in a Steam Community discussion dated in late September 2026—not from a directly verified Valve support article. The reproduced response says: “Currently, the Wireless Adapter requires a Windows PC. The hardware team hopes to expand support to other operating systems, including SteamOS, post-launch.” It also says SteamVR on Steam Machine and desktop Linux is not fully supported at that time: Steam Community discussion reproducing the response.

| Linux host | Stated prerequisite | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Machine | SteamOS 3.9 or later | A version requirement stated in the reproduced support response; it does not establish full SteamVR support. |
| Other Linux PC | Linux kernel 7.2 or later | A kernel requirement stated in the reproduced support response; it does not guarantee setup success or compatibility with every distribution. |
These are prerequisites, not a promise of reliable operation, official end-to-end support, or compatibility with a particular graphics driver, distribution, or PC configuration. The response itself describes Linux SteamVR as not fully supported.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not confuse Steam Remote Play with Steam Frame PCVR
Valve’s general Remote Play documentation covers streaming among Steam computers, including Linux: Steam Remote Play. That capability is separate from streaming PCVR to Steam Frame through the dedicated wireless adapter. General Remote Play support for Linux therefore does not establish Linux support for the Frame adapter or its VR streaming stack.

Which Steam Frame use case fits your PC?
- Windows PC and wireless adapter: This is the configuration the reproduced support response identifies as currently required.
- Steam Machine or another Linux PC and wireless adapter: The response names SteamOS 3.9+ or Linux kernel 7.2+ respectively, but says Linux SteamVR is not fully supported.
- Ordinary network-based Steam Remote Play: Linux is included in Valve’s general computer-streaming information, but that is not confirmation of Steam Frame PCVR compatibility.
- Standalone play: Steam Frame also supports standalone VR and non-VR experiences, so using it without a Linux PC as the streaming host is a separate path.
The available information does not establish that these paths offer equivalent reliability or performance. For a Linux buyer or owner, the safest reading is to distinguish listed Linux game execution from Linux-hosted PCVR streaming: the latter is not established as fully supported by the cited guidance.
