Neither design is universally better: fit, sound, and comfort depend on the specific model and your anatomy.
What is the difference between over-ear and on-ear headphones?
Over-ear headphones have cups that surround the outer ears. On-ear headphones use shallower pads that rest on the outer ears. These are also called circumaural and supra-aural headphones, respectively; beyerdynamic’s help center defines the styles this way.

The distinction affects how a headphone sits, but it does not determine every aspect of its performance. RTINGS’ comparison, updated August 12, 2025, describes broad tendencies while noting substantial differences between models.
Which is more comfortable for long listening?
Over-ear: less direct ear pressure, potentially more heat
Because the pads can rest around the ear rather than on it, over-ears are often a good starting point for long listening sessions. Their larger cushions may distribute contact around the ear, but can also retain heat. The fit still depends on cup dimensions, cushion material and how firmly the headband clamps.
#1 Best Overall
- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
On-ear: lighter, but pressure is concentrated on the ear
On-ears tend to be lighter and less enclosing. Their pads press directly against the outer ear, which can become uncomfortable over time—especially if your ears are large relative to the cushions or the clamp is strong.
Try the exact model when possible. Check whether the pads fit your ears, how the headband feels, and whether the materials remain comfortable after wearing the headphones for a while. Glasses wearers should pay particular attention to the interaction between clamp force, pad material, frame material and head shape; the category label alone cannot predict comfort.

Do over-ear headphones block more noise?
Often, yes: a closed-back over-ear cup can form a seal around the ear, which typically provides more passive isolation than on-ear pads. On-ears generally leave more of the ear exposed, though isolation varies considerably by model.
Back design matters. Open-back over-ears are designed to let sound pass through the ear cups, so they do not provide the same containment as closed-back models. Active noise cancellation (ANC) is another factor, but it is a feature of a particular headphone, not an automatic benefit of the over-ear style. For noisy travel or focused work, compare closed-back models and their ANC performance rather than relying on the form factor alone.

Are on-ear headphones better for travel?
They can be: on-ear headphones are usually more compact and lighter, making them easier to carry. Over-ears take up more room, although some fold down for storage. Compare the actual weight, folded size and case of the models you are considering; the category is only a rough guide.
For travel, weigh portability against isolation and comfort. A small on-ear pair may be easier to pack, while a closed-back over-ear pair may suit a trip where reducing surrounding noise matters more.

Does one style sound better?
No style guarantees better sound. The larger space inside some over-ear cups can support larger drivers and a spacious presentation, while on-ears may deliver less impactful bass on average. Those are tendencies, not rules: tuning and construction vary by model, and sound preference is personal. RTINGS’ broader comparison likewise says sound quality depends more on the model than the headphone type: Which Type Of Headphones Are Best For You?

Which style should you choose for your use?
- Long listening, focused work or more passive isolation: Start with closed-back over-ears if their size and warmth are acceptable.
- Compact everyday carry or lower weight: Consider on-ears if you tolerate pressure on your outer ears; check pad coverage and clamp.
- Calls: Choose for microphone quality, not ear-cup style. A dedicated boom microphone is worth considering when clear voice pickup is a priority.
- Vigorous workouts: Neither style is the default choice. RTINGS recommends considering in-ear designs with stability hooks; on-ears may feel less hot than over-ears but can be less stable.
A quick fit check before buying
- Check whether the cups surround your ears or press on them, and whether the pads fit your ear size.
- Assess the clamp and cushion material, including whether either causes pressure with your glasses.
- Compare the model’s actual weight and folded dimensions if you will carry it regularly.
- For noisy settings, confirm whether it is closed- or open-back and whether it has ANC.
- For calls, examine microphone design and reviews of voice pickup; do not infer mic quality from the headphone style.
