Before buying a gaming PC, verify the exact CPU, graphics card, RAM, storage, operating system and DirectX version in the configuration you will receive. Then compare those details with the current requirements for the specific games you plan to play. A “gaming PC” label—or a computer that meets Windows 11’s minimum requirements—does not tell you how well it will run a game.
Start with the games you want to play
Game requirements are the useful comparison point, not a universal gaming-PC threshold. Look up the current minimum and recommended requirements published by each game’s publisher. Compare the listed CPU, GPU, memory, storage, operating system and DirectX needs with the PC’s exact configuration.

Minimum requirements indicate a baseline for compatibility, not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution or graphics quality. A PC that meets them may still need lower settings or resolution than you prefer. Decide what experience you want—such as the display resolution and graphics settings—before judging whether a configuration is suitable. Without a named game and target experience, there is no reliable single CPU, GPU or RAM amount to recommend for every buyer.
Check these specifications on the exact PC
- Processor (CPU): Record the full model name and compare it with the game’s requirements. A broad tier or product-family name does not establish performance.
- Graphics processor (GPU): Record the full model name, and note graphics memory if the game’s requirements specify it. For a laptop, compare the laptop GPU with the requirement rather than assuming a similarly named desktop GPU is equivalent.
- Memory (RAM): Check installed capacity and compare it with the game’s minimum and recommended figures. Windows 11’s 4 GB minimum is an operating-system requirement, not a gaming recommendation. Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements also list 64 GB of storage as a minimum; neither figure says a PC is suitable for a particular game.
- Storage: Check capacity and, where relevant, drive type. If a game or feature requires a specific drive, compare that requirement with the PC’s actual storage. Microsoft says DirectStorage requires an NVMe SSD, a compatible controller driver and a DirectX 12 GPU with Shader Model 6.0 support; this is a feature-specific requirement, not a blanket requirement for all games. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications.
- Operating system and DirectX: Confirm the installed OS edition and version, then check DirectX as described below. Compare both with the game’s published requirements.
Check the installed DirectX version in Windows
- Search Windows for dxdiag and open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
- Select the System tab.
- Under System Information, find the DirectX version and compare it with the game’s requirement.
These steps follow Microsoft Support’s instructions for checking DirectX. Microsoft warns that a game may not work properly if the required DirectX version is missing.

Keep Windows compatibility separate from gaming performance
Microsoft’s Windows 11 minimum requirements include 4 GB RAM, a 64 GB storage device, and graphics compatible with DirectX 12 or later with a WDDM 2.0 driver. These figures describe whether hardware meets the operating system’s baseline, not whether it can run a particular game smoothly. Microsoft also notes that some apps have higher requirements. Check Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements, then use each game’s own current requirements for the gaming comparison.

PC families and listings can cover multiple configurations, so confirm that the exact unit for sale has the CPU, GPU, RAM and storage you evaluated. Ask the seller for the full configuration or inspect the actual system before purchase if possible. A family name, headline spec or product photo alone may not establish which components are included.

For a side-by-side comparison, use the same intended game and experience for both PCs. Check the exact CPU and GPU models, graphics memory when specified, system RAM, storage capacity and drive type when specified, OS and DirectX compatibility, and whether the configuration aligns with your target resolution and settings. If a listing does not identify a component precisely, treat that detail as unverified rather than assuming the more capable option.
