Outlook Running Slow? 9 Ways to Speed It Up on Windows

Find out whether you use new or classic Outlook, then work through nine troubleshooting steps—from checking active tasks and add-ins to profile and Office repair.

If Outlook for Windows is slow, first identify whether you’re using new Outlook or classic Outlook: the apps have different troubleshooting steps. Start with a restart, let any active mailbox work finish, and install updates. For classic Outlook, then test add-ins in Safe Mode before moving on to profile, data-file, or Office repair steps.

1. Identify which Outlook you use

New Outlook and classic Outlook do not share every troubleshooting step. Check whether the new Outlook toggle is on or off, or confirm the app name in Windows. The instructions below label steps that apply only to classic Outlook; Microsoft’s dedicated freeze guidance says it does not apply to new Outlook. See Microsoft’s Outlook freeze troubleshooting and its general Outlook troubleshooting guidance.

2. Restart Outlook and check for work in progress

New Outlook

If new Outlook stops responding, Microsoft recommends ending its task in Task Manager, then reopening the app. Save work in other applications before ending a task.

Classic Outlook

Before force-closing classic Outlook, look at the status bar for activity. Auto-archive, a large attachment transfer, mailbox operations, or moving or deleting hundreds or thousands of messages can take time and make the app appear frozen. Allow the operation a short time to finish; interrupting it may leave the task incomplete. Microsoft’s freeze guidance covers these symptoms.

3. Install Windows and Office updates

Check for Windows updates and updates for Microsoft 365 or Office, then restart Windows if prompted. Microsoft says updates can replace outdated files and provide fixes and performance enhancements; an update is a sensible early step, not proof that an old version caused the slowdown. Follow Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for update steps appropriate to your Outlook version.

4. Test classic Outlook in Safe Mode

Safe Mode starts classic Outlook without add-ins loaded, making it a useful diagnostic test. Microsoft Support notes, “Sometimes add-ins can conflict with classic Outlook for Windows.” COM add-ins are separate programs and can add latency when changing folders, receiving mail, or opening calendar items. They are not supported in new Outlook for Windows. See Microsoft’s freeze guidance and its add-in guidance.

  1. Press Windows key + R, enter outlook.exe /safe, and press Enter.
  2. If Outlook is faster in Safe Mode, open classic Outlook normally. Go to File > Options > Add-ins.
  3. At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins, then select Go.
  4. Record which add-ins are enabled, clear their checkboxes, and restart Outlook.
  5. Re-enable one add-in at a time, restarting Outlook after each change. If the slowdown returns, the last enabled add-in is a likely cause.

During this test, disable add-ins by clearing their checkboxes; do not select Remove. If Outlook is still slow in Safe Mode, the cause may lie elsewhere.

5. Consider data-file size, indexing, and configuration

Large PST or OST files are one possible cause of pauses when reading, moving, or deleting messages—not a diagnosis by themselves. Microsoft Support’s older guidance says files up to 5 GB should provide a good experience on most hardware, while performance at 5–10 GB is typically hardware-dependent. The page’s publication year is not stated, so treat these figures as qualified historical guidance rather than a current universal limit. Don’t delete messages just to meet a size target. See Microsoft’s Outlook performance article.

Microsoft also lists Windows Search indexing, incomplete PST or OST closure, redirected AppData, RSS feeds, Exchange Online mode, and damaged profiles among possible factors. Indexing may need time to finish. If your organization manages your Exchange configuration, ask its IT team before changing it. Avoid casual registry edits or disabling security tools as speed fixes; those changes can create risks beyond Outlook.

6. Test with a new classic Outlook profile

A classic Outlook profile holds account settings and can become damaged. Creating a new profile and comparing Outlook’s performance can help determine whether the old profile is involved. If the new one works better, the old profile is implicated; this test does not by itself identify what damaged it. Profile setup may require account details and reconfiguration, so keep those details available and consult your administrator for a managed account. Microsoft describes the diagnostic step in its Outlook troubleshooting guidance.

7. Repair Outlook data files or Office

If simpler checks do not help, Microsoft’s Inbox Repair Tool, ScanPST, can scan Outlook data files and repair errors. If the problem may involve damaged Outlook or Office components, try Office Quick Repair first; use Online Repair if Quick Repair does not resolve it. Repair options can vary by Outlook version, so follow Microsoft’s version-specific repair instructions.

8. Check current known issues before trying old workarounds

Microsoft’s classic Outlook known-issues page changes as updates and workarounds change. It was marked “Last updated: October 2026” and included issues for the October and September 2026 updates when checked on October 7, 2026. That is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee those issues remain active. Search the page for your symptom and update channel before trying registry workarounds or reinstalling: Microsoft’s current known issues and workarounds.

9. Escalate if the cause is still unclear

If Outlook remains slow after the steps for your version, use Microsoft’s guided support or contact your organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator. Share whether you use new or classic Outlook, what troubleshooting steps you tried, and when the slowdown occurs—for example, at startup, while changing folders, or during a mailbox operation. This helps narrow the problem without assuming that a hardware upgrade is the answer.
