Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo use Outlook on a Windows 11 PC, first identify whether you have new Outlook or classic Outlook, then add your email account in the app’s account settings. The two versions do not always share the same controls or account behavior, so the instructions below call out where the distinction matters.
Which Outlook app is on your Windows 11 PC?
Windows 11 users may encounter new Outlook, classic Outlook, or the older Windows Mail app. Microsoft ended support for Windows Mail, Calendar, and People on December 31, 2024, and recommends moving to new Outlook or Outlook.com. Microsoft also provides instructions for exporting and importing locally stored items. See Microsoft’s Windows Mail, Calendar, and People transition guidance before leaving the old apps if you need to preserve local data.

New Outlook may be available as a preinstalled app on eligible Windows 11 devices, through the Microsoft Store, or by switching on the “Try the new Outlook” option in a supported Outlook or Windows Mail app. The option may not appear if the account is unsupported or an administrator has blocked access. Microsoft’s new Outlook getting-started guide explains the available ways to begin.
How to add an email account
In new Outlook, account setup is available from Settings or Account info, then Accounts and Your accounts. Choose Add Account and follow the prompts for your provider. Microsoft’s account setup instructions cover the flow.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
New Outlook supports most accounts, including personal Microsoft accounts, work or school accounts assigned by an organization administrator, and providers such as Gmail, Yahoo, and iCloud. Other accounts may connect through IMAP. Some third-party providers require you to change settings on the provider’s own website before Outlook can connect.
- If sign-in fails: check whether your provider requires an external settings change, then retry.
- If it is a work or school account: your organization’s administrator may limit which accounts or app options are available.
- If you need public folders: Microsoft notes that new Outlook’s public-folder support is limited. If your work depends on creating, modifying, or deleting public folders, check whether classic Outlook better fits that workflow.
Find the main controls in new Outlook
Use the gear icon to open Settings. The ribbon contains controls for the current Outlook area, while the navigation bar provides access to Calendar and Contacts. My Day offers quick access to calendar and tasks. Microsoft’s getting-started guide describes these interface areas.

For everyday email organization, Microsoft documents pinning and snoozing messages, scheduling an email for later delivery, and applying categories. Where a control appears can vary with the selected Outlook version and app updates; follow the guide for the version you have open rather than assuming a classic Outlook control is in the same place in new Outlook.

When to use classic Outlook instead
New Outlook is a practical starting point for many personal and work or school accounts, but compatibility and organizational policies can affect what you can do. Public-folder workflows are a notable consideration: Microsoft describes support as limited, so users who administer or rely on public folders should confirm their required tasks are supported before switching.

Quick checks if setup does not work
- Confirm the app. Check whether the window is new Outlook, classic Outlook, or Windows Mail; steps and available settings differ.
- Confirm the account type. New Outlook supports many common accounts, and other accounts may use IMAP, but provider requirements vary.
- Check the provider’s own settings. Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, and other providers may require account-side settings changes.
- Check organizational controls. For work or school accounts, an administrator can restrict account support or access to the new app.
- Reassess specialized needs. If public-folder management is essential, verify that new Outlook supports the exact tasks you need before changing versions.
