Which router password should you change?
“Router password” can mean either of two things:

- Administrator password: This protects access to the router’s settings. An administrator can change settings, including the Wi-Fi password.
- Wi-Fi password: This is what phones, computers, and other devices enter to connect to your wireless network.
Change the administrator password if it is still the default, and use credentials unique to your router. Do not base them on your name, address, or router brand. Set a separate, unique Wi-Fi password. The FTC explains the distinction and recommends changing both defaults.
Protecting the administrator login matters because someone with that access could alter router settings and undo other security changes.

How to change the passwords safely
There is no single menu path that applies to every router. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific model, or contact the manufacturer for help. If your internet service provider supplied the router, its support team may also be able to direct you to the right instructions.
- Identify the router’s manufacturer and model.
- Find that model’s official instructions for changing the administrator password and Wi-Fi password, or contact the manufacturer.
- Set a unique administrator password and a separate, secure Wi-Fi password.
- Log out of the administrator account when you finish.
Menu names and recovery steps vary by model, so avoid assuming a particular web address or app flow will work for your router. The FTC recommends following the manufacturer’s directions and logging out after changing settings. FTC home Wi-Fi guidance.

Check your Wi-Fi encryption
A strong Wi-Fi password is only part of network security. Check the router’s wireless security setting and choose WPA3 Personal if available. WPA2 Personal is also a suitable modern option. The FTC calls WPA3 the newer and best available encryption and says WPA2 Personal also works; CISA recommends WPA2 or WPA3 at minimum and advises disabling legacy WEP and WPA. FTC and CISA.
If the router offers only WEP or WPA, check whether a software update adds WPA2 or WPA3. If neither becomes available after updating, the FTC advises considering a replacement router. FTC guidance on older routers.

Update the router and review convenience features
Check for firmware updates
Look on the manufacturer’s website for a newer version of your router’s software, often called firmware. If your internet provider supplied the router, ask whether it installs updates automatically. Update availability and support depend on the model; the FTC guidance does not establish one support lifetime for all routers. FTC update advice.
Turn off features you do not need
The FTC recommends disabling remote management, WPS, and UPnP if you do not need them. These features can make remote access, device setup, or device discovery more convenient, but may weaken network security. Follow your model’s instructions to find and change these settings, then log out of the administrator account. FTC recommendations.

When should you replace the router?
Changing passwords does not add modern encryption to a router that lacks it. Replacement is a consideration if the device offers only WEP or WPA and a software update still does not provide WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal. For a replacement, check that it supports WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal and that its manufacturer provides firmware updates. The FTC’s advice on encryption and replacement.

Do you need to change the passwords regularly?
The cited FTC guidance recommends changing default credentials and using unique passwords, but it does not prescribe a universal rotation schedule or router-specific password length. Focus on replacing defaults, keeping the administrator and Wi-Fi credentials distinct, and securing the network with modern encryption.
