Osmania University (OU) researchers in Hyderabad, India, have developed PollenSignum, a proposed authentication concept that pairs pollen’s microscopic biological features with an optical signature associated with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanomaterials. News reports published in October 2026 describe it as a research and patent-stage system—not a commercially available product or a technology with confirmed real-world deployments.
How PollenSignum is reported to work
The concept combines two kinds of identifying features. First, pollen grains are identified by taxon and characterized through their microscopic shape and exine architecture—the structure of the outer surface. Second, ZnO nanomaterials are associated with an optical or fluorescent signature. The reports describe registering and checking these biological and optical features together as a covert authentication marker.

Telangana Today and Deccan Chronicle describe the system based on information attributed to a press release. Neither report supplies a technical paper or patent specification, so the precise preparation, encoding, and verification procedures are not established in the available accounts.

The reports attribute to the patent description a library of 12 distinguishable pollen taxa and 4,096 possible non-empty combinations. That is a theoretical combinatorial count: it is not a measured accuracy rate, a count of successful authentications, or proof that each combination is equally difficult to counterfeit.

How an item might be checked
The described approach has two possible stages: optical screening of a marker, potentially held in a sealed micro-container, followed by microscopic or forensic examination of its pollen features. The reports do not specify a consumer reader, microscope model, magnification, reference-library procedure, or validated testing protocol. A general-purpose digital microscope may help examine microscopic material, but no such device has been shown to read or validate PollenSignum.
Proposed uses—not confirmed deployments
Coverage names possible placements in security documents, currency substrates, security threads, pharmaceutical packaging, jewellery, gemstones, luxury goods, certificates, collectibles, and other high-value items. Researchers and reported patent timeline
The reports name Dr. A. Vijaya Bhasker Reddy, D. Nirmala, and B. Vijay Kumar of Osmania University as the developers. They say an Indian patent application titled “PollenSignum: A Combinatorial Pollen-Based Nano-Optical Authentication System with Spatially Encoded Biological Signatures” was filed on September 19, 2026, and published by the Intellectual Property Office, India, on October 2, 2026. These dates are reported by Telangana Today and Deccan Chronicle on October 3, 2026; the official application number, application text, claims, and prosecution status have not been independently established here.

The October 2026 news coverage does not provide measured performance results for PollenSignum. In particular, it gives no validated false-acceptance or false-rejection rates, durability data, reading speed, or field-authentication results. Nor does it establish licensing, commercial availability, pricing, or deployment partners. Until technical validation and primary patent details are available, the system is best understood as a proposed authentication concept rather than a proven anti-counterfeiting solution.
