Microsoft’s Windows and Surface event was scheduled for October 7, 2026, with a broad focus on how local AI could shape the next chapter of the PC. As of October 4, the event had not happened: Microsoft had not confirmed Windows 12, a full list of product announcements, or which new features would ship. The clearest hardware signpost was the announced Surface Laptop Ultra, which Microsoft describes as a laptop built around NVIDIA silicon for local AI, creative work, and gaming.
What Microsoft has confirmed about the October 7 event
Microsoft framed the event around Windows, Surface, NVIDIA RTX Spark, and the role of local AI in the PC’s future. That establishes the subject area, not a complete launch slate. Pre-event coverage likewise distinguished the confirmed event theme from predictions about particular products or Windows features. (Windows Latest, October 3, 2026; WindowsForum, October 3, 2026)

What the Surface Laptop Ultra is
Microsoft has published an official product page for the Surface Laptop Ultra, making it a concrete announced device rather than just an event rumor. Microsoft presents it as a powerful laptop built around a new NVIDIA chip, with local AI, creative workflows, and gaming among its intended uses. The specifications below are manufacturer statements, not independent test results. (Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra)

- Ports: USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, a headphone jack, and a full-size SD card reader.
- Touchpad: Microsoft says it is over 30% larger than the touchpad on the Surface Laptop 7th Edition.
Microsoft’s local-AI claims
Microsoft says the NVIDIA chip can deliver up to one petaflop of AI compute and describes the laptop as capable of running AI models locally. The product page does not provide an independent benchmark, specify performance across particular models, or establish that every AI task will run on the device. Microsoft’s wording—“Run AI models locally to help you move faster, experiment freely, and manage your cloud costs”—is product positioning, not a measured guarantee.
Local processing can be useful when a supported model and workflow fit the laptop’s hardware: it may reduce reliance on a cloud service, potentially lowering cloud usage costs and latency while keeping some data on the device. Those benefits depend on the model, application, configuration, and task. Microsoft also acknowledges that some work can still use cloud models, so “local AI” should not be read as “all AI is offline.”

Will Microsoft announce Windows 12?
Windows 12 had not been confirmed for the October 7 event in reporting available before the date. The event’s Windows focus makes new software announcements plausible, but it does not establish a new Windows version, an agent feature, or any specific consumer capability. Treat claims about Windows 12 or unannounced features as speculation until Microsoft identifies them.

For a local-AI PC, the useful question is not simply how much compute a manufacturer advertises. Check whether the applications and models you intend to use support the hardware, whether they run locally or call a cloud service, and how much memory your actual workload needs. For comparisons with other RTX Spark systems, wait for confirmed configurations, prices, shipping status and regulatory authorization, then look for independent benchmarks on comparable tasks. The available pre-event information does not establish a winner.
