The author reports that Gemini 3.7 Flash, Claude Sonnet 4.5, and Grok 4.20 Reasoning caught all three cases. Those results are a small, author-run test—not a general ranking of model ability.
What did the benchmark test?
Chauhan Balaji describes “The Silent Killer” as an adversarial harness for checking whether language models identify consequential methodological errors in plausible-looking ML pipelines, rather than focusing only on syntax. The examples concern heart-disease prediction. The report says its evaluation uses a rubric that changes with the intended flaw and a “No Misdiagnosis” guard meant to prevent generic or irrelevant best-practice advice from earning credit.

The harness presents three planted cases:
- Preprocessing leakage: A
StandardScaleris fitted to the entire feature matrix before the data is split into training and test sets. - Accuracy on an imbalanced cohort: The example stipulates a screening group that is 95% healthy and 5% sick, then evaluates with accuracy.
- A post-diagnosis feature:
number_of_cardiology_visitsis included as a predictor even though the scenario describes it as recorded after clinical evaluation and diagnosis.
These are scenarios in the benchmark report. In particular, the 95/5 balance is stipulated for its example, and the report does not independently establish the cardiology-visit feature’s timing from an inspected dataset.
Which models caught each planted flaw?
The report says it used Kaggle Model Proxy and tested four models. The following are the author’s reported labels and scores; exact model versions and execution settings have not been independently verified.

- Explore several models, including support vector machines, decision trees, random forests, and ensemble methods
- Exploit unsupervised learning techniques such as dimensionality reduction, clustering, and anomaly detection

| Model name in the report | Preprocessing leakage | Imbalanced-cohort accuracy | Post-diagnosis feature | Reported total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini 3.7 Flash | Caught | Caught | Caught | 100% |
| Claude Sonnet 4.5 | Caught | Caught | Caught | 100% |
| Grok 4.20 Reasoning | Caught | Caught | Caught | 100% |
| DeepSeek-R1 | Missed | Caught | Caught | 67% |
DeepSeek-R1’s only reported miss was the preprocessing case. With just three cases, one miss moves the displayed score from 100% to 67%; the figures do not establish statistical significance or predict how these models would perform across other datasets, prompts, or code-review tasks.
Why is fitting a scaler before the split a leakage bug?
StandardScaler learns statistics such as each feature’s mean and standard deviation. If it is fitted using the full dataset before the split, those statistics include information from examples later designated as test data. The model-building process has therefore used part of the held-out data, weakening the test’s role as an independent check.
Rank #2
Scikit-learn’s official guidance on common pitfalls says to split into train and test subsets before preprocessing. Fit transformations on training data, then apply those learned transformations to the test data. A scikit-learn pipeline can help enforce that order during model evaluation.

How can accuracy hide a screening failure?
In the benchmark’s stipulated 95%-healthy, 5%-sick example, a classifier that predicts “healthy” for every person would still be 95% accurate, despite finding none of the sick cases. That is why accuracy alone can give a misleading impression when one class dominates.
Recall measures the share of positive cases found: tp / (tp + fn). Scikit-learn’s metrics guide also describes balanced accuracy as a measure designed to avoid inflated performance estimates on imbalanced datasets. Neither metric by itself determines whether a screening model is acceptable: evaluation should reflect the intended use and the consequences of false negatives and false positives.
What does the post-diagnosis feature case illustrate?
A model should be evaluated using information that would actually be available when its prediction is supposed to happen. If cardiology visits are recorded only after diagnosis, including that feature in a model intended to predict disease beforehand gives the model access to future information. It may appear predictive without being usable for the stated prediction task.
Rank #4
That conclusion depends on the timing described in the benchmark scenario. The report does not establish that timing through an independent inspection of the underlying dataset.
Where can you see the methodology and code?
Balaji links a Kaggle notebook for the benchmark’s methodology and code. The report is the source for the setup and results; independent run logs, exact prompts and judge outputs, and repeated trials are not established here. The notebook’s current contents and reproducibility have not been confirmed.
Best Value
The useful takeaway is methodological rather than a model ranking: leakage before a split can undermine evaluation, majority-class accuracy can conceal missed positives, and predictors must exist at the intended prediction time. This benchmark raises those questions with three examples, but its reported scores are too limited to support broader claims about model capability.
