Start with this quick diagnosis
Before replacing anything, note:
- Which program shows the error: a printer utility, an old application, a game, or Windows itself.
- When it appears: during printing, while opening printer properties, after removing a printer, or immediately after signing in.
- Which printer is installed: open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners in Windows 11, or Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners in Windows 10.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit: go to Settings → System → About and read System type.
- What changed first: Windows Update, a driver update, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, system restoration, cloning, or removal of old printer software.

optrares.dll is an old printer-driver component associated with Lexmark Optra printers. If optrares.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, the safest repair is normally to rebuild the complete printer driver package rather than download the DLL by itself.
What is optrares.dll?
The file is identified as Optra Printer Driver and is associated with the older Microsoft Windows NT printer-driver environment. “Optra” refers to Lexmark printer families, including Optra S, T, C, E, and W models.

That makes optrares.dll a driver resource file, not a general-purpose Windows runtime like a Visual C++ library, DirectX component, or .NET file. It is normally used by a printer package or by software that still expects that package to be installed.
Some file inventories report a legacy version and file size, but those details are not a current Microsoft file manifest and should not be used to select a replacement. The exact location also varies. A printer driver may be managed from the Windows Driver Store or a spooler-controlled directory rather than C:WindowsSystem32.

The file description mentioning Microsoft Windows NT does not mean that every current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should contain optrares.dll. It describes the historical driver package associated with the file.
Is optrares.dll malware?
The filename alone does not establish that the file is malicious. A missing file is more commonly caused by an incomplete or outdated printer installation, a removed printer queue, a migration, or antivirus quarantine.
However, do not restore an arbitrary copy merely because its name looks familiar. If the file was quarantined, open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history and inspect the detection. Restore or allow it only when the associated printer package came from a trusted manufacturer or Microsoft source and the file has a valid digital signature.
Run a scan with Microsoft Defender if:
- the file appeared outside a printer-driver directory;
- the alert names suspicious behavior rather than a simple unwanted file;
- other unrelated files are disappearing;
- the error began after installing pirated software or an unknown driver package.
Fix 1: Identify and reinstall the affected printer
This is the most likely solution when the error appears during printing, when opening printer properties, or while installing an Optra printer.
Remove the old printer
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners in Windows 11, or Devices → Printers & scanners in Windows 10.
- Select the Lexmark or Optra printer.
- Choose Remove or Remove device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
Removing the queue breaks the stale reference that may still point to optrares.dll. Restarting also gives the print spooler a clean start before the driver is installed again.
Re-add the printer
After restarting:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to find the printer.
- If it appears, select Add device.
- Print a test page from the printer’s properties.
If Windows does not find it:
- Select Add device.
- Wait briefly, then choose Add manually.
- Select the connection type that matches the printer, such as a USB printer or a network printer.
- Follow the wizard.
- If Windows offers Windows Update for the driver list, allow it to refresh.
- Select the closest exact Lexmark model, not merely a similarly named printer.
Microsoft’s supported printer workflow is documented in its printer connection and printing troubleshooting guidance.
Use the complete Lexmark package when Windows Update is insufficient
For an older Optra printer, identify all of these before installing a package:
- exact printer model;
- PCL or PostScript language;
- Windows architecture;
- Windows release supported by the package;
- USB or network connection type.
Lexmark’s archived packages distinguish x86 and x64 systems and may separate PCL emulation from PostScript drivers. A package for an Optra T printer is not automatically suitable for an Optra C or E model, and an x86 driver is not a substitute for an x64 package.
Download the driver only from Microsoft Update Catalog or Lexmark’s official support area. Install the package, restart Windows, and print a test page. If the error disappears when opening the printer queue or printing, the driver package was the problem.

Manually hunting through old model names, architectures, and PCL or PostScript variants is easy to get wrong. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale driver entries and show what needs updating; its free scan identifies the problem, while driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not required when the exact official package is already available.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus removed the driver file
A security product can quarantine a printer resource file during installation or after a definition update. This is especially worth checking when the printer worked previously and the error appeared without a driver change you made.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries involving the printer package or
optrares.dll. - Open an entry to see its location, detection name, and action.
- If the package is known to be genuine, use the available Restore or Allow on device action.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the complete printer package rather than copying the restored file manually.
Do not disable antivirus protection just to install a DLL from an unknown source. If Defender continues to remove a file from a legitimate package, obtain a fresh package from Microsoft or Lexmark and check its digital signature. If the file is detected as malware, leave it quarantined and investigate the package instead.
Fix 3: Match the driver to 32-bit or 64-bit Windows
An architecture mismatch can produce loader errors even when a file with the correct name exists.
To check your system:
- Open Settings.
- Select System → About.
- Find System type.
- Note whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Then obtain the matching printer package. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 on a 64-bit system, and do not copy files into both System32 and SysWOW64 as a guess. Windows uses those directories differently, and arbitrary copies can create version conflicts.
The same principle applies to the printer language. PCL and PostScript drivers are separate implementations. If the printer or the application expects one language and you install another, the queue may install successfully but fail when printing or opening advanced properties.
Recommended Free Tools
If the printer is connected through a print server, the server may also need the correct driver architecture. A local reinstall may not fix a server-side queue that continues to deliver an incompatible package.
Fix 4: Remove stale driver leftovers
Sometimes the printer has been removed but an old queue, port, or driver package remains. A later application may still try to load it.
First remove unused printers from Settings → Printers & scanners. Then inspect the traditional printer management interface:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
control printers. - Press Enter.
- Remove obsolete printer entries.
- In the toolbar, select Print server properties.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select an old Lexmark or Optra driver that is no longer used.
- Choose Remove.
- Select the option to remove the driver and driver package when Windows offers it.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct package again.
Do not remove a driver that another working printer still uses. If Windows refuses to remove it because the package is in use, stop the print spooler first:

- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Stop.
- Remove the unused driver from Print server properties.
- Return to Services, right-click Print Spooler, and select Start.
- Restart Windows before reinstalling the printer.
If the problem began after a system image restore, Windows migration, disk cleanup, or printer removal, this stale-reference repair is particularly relevant.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
A missing printer-driver file is not automatically evidence of Windows corruption. Run system repair commands when several unrelated Windows files or features are also failing, or when Windows Update and built-in components behave abnormally.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run DISM first:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends this order because DISM can provide the repair source used by SFC. Microsoft’s instructions are available in its System File Checker and DISM guidance.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: system files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the printer again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some: review the command output, restart, and repeat the printer-driver repair rather than downloading a DLL.
- DISM fails: make sure Command Prompt is elevated and Windows can access its repair source through Windows Update.
Running SFC repeatedly will not reconstruct a missing third-party printer package. If the commands complete successfully but the error remains, return to the printer reinstall steps.
If manually comparing repair logs and working through repeated DISM/SFC runs is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows problems and show what it found; the free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version, and Microsoft’s built-in commands remain the appropriate no-cost path.
Fix 6: Determine whether another program is calling the DLL
The visible error may name optrares.dll, but the requesting program may be an old utility rather than Windows or the printer itself.
Write down the executable named in the error. Then test:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Cancel the error.
- Open the suspected printer utility directly.
- Open the printer queue and print a test page.
- Try the same operation from another application.
- If possible, sign in with another Windows user account and test again.
If printing works everywhere except one old application, that application may contain a stale reference to the removed driver. Check the application’s own repair or reinstall option. A launcher’s file-verification feature is relevant only if the application shipped its own printer component.
If only one user account fails, the issue may be a damaged per-user printer configuration. Remove the printer from that account, restart, and add it again. If a new account works, migrate the necessary files and settings rather than copying optrares.dll into application folders.

- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Check Windows Logs → Application and Windows Logs → System.
- Look around the time of the error.
- Note the executable, printer name, and any dependency named in the event.
A “module could not be found” message can mean that a dependency of optrares.dll is missing or incompatible. The named file may exist while another driver component is the actual failure.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine repair
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain ActiveX and COM components. Microsoft documents the command in its regsvr32 reference.
There is no evidence that optrares.dll is a self-registering ActiveX or COM library. Running this command is therefore not a normal repair:
regsvr32 optrares.dll
It will not install the printer driver, rebuild the print queue, restore missing dependencies, or correct an architecture mismatch. A failed registration message can add confusion without addressing the cause.
Use regsvr32 only when documentation for the specific application or driver explicitly says that the DLL supports registration. For this file, reinstalling the complete printer package is the appropriate approach.
Fix 8: Consider compatibility when the Optra printer is unsupported
Some Optra hardware is old enough that a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 driver may not exist. In that case:

- Check the official Lexmark support page for a package matching the printer language and Windows architecture.
- Try a compatible generic PCL or PostScript driver if the printer supports that language.
- Add the printer manually and select the compatible driver.
- Print a test page and verify advanced features separately.
A generic driver may restore basic printing while losing model-specific features such as finishing, toner reporting, or special paper controls. If no compatible signed driver exists, using the printer through an older supported system or a print server may be more reliable than forcing an old DLL into modern Windows.
System Restore is a fallback, not the first fix. Consider it only when the problem clearly began after a recent driver or system change and removing and reinstalling the printer did not help.
Why downloading optrares.dll is usually the wrong fix
Random DLL download sites sites can provide:
- malware or tampered files;
- the wrong architecture;
- a file from a different driver release;
- a resource file with missing dependencies;
- a DLL that does not match the printer package.
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, an application folder, or a printer-driver directory does not recreate the package registration, printer queue, ports, dependencies, or spooler configuration. It can also make troubleshooting harder by leaving mismatched driver files behind.

Is optrares.dll a Windows system file?
It is described as part of the Microsoft Windows NT operating system and as an Optra Printer Driver, but it should be understood as part of an old printer-driver package. Its presence is not established as a standard component of every current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
Which printer installed optrares.dll?
The name points to Lexmark Optra printer families, but the filename alone cannot identify the exact model. Check installed printers, old printer documentation, print-server queues, and the application that displays the error.
Does Windows 64-bit need a different optrares.dll?
The driver package must match the operating-system architecture. Do not substitute an x86 file for an x64 package or copy files between System32 and SysWOW64.
Why does the error appear after removing a printer?
An old application, queue, shortcut, or per-user printer setting may still refer to the removed driver. Reinstall the correct printer or remove the stale queue and driver package.
Can SFC restore the file?
SFC can repair protected Windows components, but it is not a replacement for reinstalling a missing Lexmark printer-driver package. Use DISM followed by SFC when broader Windows corruption is evident.
Should I register the file with regsvr32?
Usually no. There is no evidence that optrares.dll requires COM or ActiveX registration. Reinstall the complete printer driver instead.
What if the error remains after reinstalling?
Identify the exact executable producing it, test another user account, check Event Viewer, and look for a stale reference or missing dependency. The named DLL may not be the actual root cause.
