awbmsc32.dll is a real Microsoft DLL associated with the old Microsoft Fax and At Work Fax components supplied with Windows 95-era software. If Windows 10 or Windows 11 reports that awbmsc32.dll is missing, the safest fix is usually to identify the legacy program requesting it and repair or reinstall that program, not to download a replacement DLL.
The file was used as a bitmap or bit-scaling codec in the historical Microsoft Fax file set. There is no good evidence that current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installs or uses it as a normal system component.

What the awbmsc32.dll error means
Common messages include:
- “This application failed to start because awbmsc32.dll was not found.”
- “awbmsc32.dll is missing.”
- “awbmsc32.dll could not be loaded.”
These messages do not identify the real cause by themselves. They only tell you that a program attempted to load the DLL and Windows could not provide a usable copy.

- An old fax or messaging application
- A preserved Windows 95 or Windows 98 installation
- A 32-bit program running inside a virtual machine
- An obsolete startup item left behind after an uninstall
- A damaged installer or application
- A misconfigured legacy program
- Malware or an untrusted program using a familiar Microsoft filename
Before changing Windows system files, note the exact program that displays the error. Check the title bar, shortcut you opened, startup notification, or Task Manager entry. If the message appears immediately after signing in, the cause may be an obsolete startup entry rather than Windows itself.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the program requesting the DLL
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
This is the safest first fix on Windows 10 and Windows 11. A missing DLL normally belongs to a parent application, and reinstalling the application restores its complete set of files and configuration.
If the program is installed normally
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the program named in the error.
- Select the three-dot button beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and launch the program again.
The Repair option does not appear for every application. If it is unavailable:
- Return to Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the three-dot button beside the application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart the computer.
- Install the program again from its original vendor media or official installer.
For a classic desktop program, open Control Panel and select:
Programs → Programs and Features
Select the application, then look for Repair, Change, or Uninstall. Use Repair or Change when offered.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if the application starts without the awbmsc32.dll message and its normal functions work. If the same error returns, the installer may be incomplete, the application may require an older Windows environment, or the error may be coming from a different program.
Do not copy a DLL from another computer unless both systems have the same original application and installation state. Even then, repairing the application is more reliable because related files and registry settings may also be missing.
Fix 2: Reinstall Microsoft Fax or At Work Fax from matching media
Time needed: 20 to 45 minutes
Historically, awbmsc32.dll was part of Microsoft Fax, also called At Work Fax. It appeared alongside related fax files including awfaxp32.dll, awcodc32.dll, awdcxc32.dll, awfmon32.dll, and awfxab32.dll.
That matters because reinstalling only awbmsc32.dll may leave the fax subsystem incomplete. Reinstall the complete Microsoft Fax component from the matching Windows installation media instead.
Windows 95
On a genuine Windows 95 installation:
- Open Control Panel.
- Open Add/Remove Programs.
- Select the Windows Setup tab.
- Insert the original Windows 95 CD if prompted.
- Locate the Microsoft Fax or messaging component.
- Clear the component, apply the change, and restart if Setup requests it.
- Open Add/Remove Programs → Windows Setup again.
- Select Microsoft Fax or At Work Fax.
- Apply the change and allow Setup to copy the files from the CD.
- Restart Windows and test the fax application.
The original Windows 95 media contains the component files in its cabinet archives. Use the Windows Setup process rather than extracting a random DLL manually.
Windows 98
On Windows 98, Microsoft’s archived repair procedure uses the Windows CD:

- Open This PC or Windows Explorer.
- Open the CD drive.
- Browse to
ToolsOldwin95MessagingUs. - Run
Awfax.exe. - Follow the Microsoft Fax installation prompts.
- Restart Windows when the installation finishes.
The folder and language path can vary on localized media. If that exact path is unavailable, use the original Windows Setup or Add/Remove Programs process for that installation.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How to tell whether this worked
Open Microsoft Fax or the application that produced the message. If the error disappears but another aw*.dll file is then reported missing, the installation is still incomplete or the media does not match the Windows release. Reinstall the full component again rather than downloading individual files.
Fix 3: Check whether Microsoft Fax was recently removed
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
The error may begin after removing or reinstalling:
- Microsoft Fax
- At Work Fax
- Windows 95 or Windows 98 messaging components
- Outlook or another old messaging client
- Office-era fax software
- A third-party fax viewer
- A legacy communications package
An old shortcut or startup entry can continue launching after the supporting component has been removed.
Check startup applications
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Startup.
- Review entries that launch at sign-in.
- Turn off an entry only if you recognize it as the obsolete fax or messaging program.
- Restart Windows.
You can also open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Startup apps, and inspect the publisher and startup impact columns.

- Open Task Manager.
- Select the relevant process, if it is running.

- Record the executable name and folder.
If the program is still needed, reinstall it from its original media. If it is no longer needed, uninstall it and remove its startup entry.
Fix 4: Run DISM and System File Checker for broader Windows corruption
Time needed: 15 to 40 minutes
SFC and DISM repair protected current Windows components. They are useful when Windows has other symptoms, such as failed updates, damaged built-in applications, or repeated component errors.
They are not proven methods for restoring this Windows 95-era DLL on modern Windows. Run them when the system has broader corruption, not as a substitute for reinstalling the old fax application.
Run DISM first
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to complete.
Do not close the window while DISM is running. It may appear to pause for a while.

Run SFC second
In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward.
Read the result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: current protected files were not found to be damaged.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more.
- The
awbmsc32.dllerror remains unchanged: repair the parent application or use a compatible legacy environment.
When repeatedly hunting through Windows components becomes less useful than identifying what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it finds; its full repair functionality is available through the full version, but it is not required and cannot replace reinstalling the specific legacy fax application.

Fix 5: Inspect Microsoft Defender quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
If the file was copied from an untrusted source, Microsoft Defender may have quarantined it. A legitimate file can also be flagged after being altered, damaged, or placed in an unusual location.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any item that mentions
awbmsc32.dllor the program that requests it.
Restore a quarantined file only when you know where it came from and can verify that the original application is legitimate. If the DLL came from a random download site, do not restore it. Remove the untrusted copy and reinstall the parent application from its original media.
Microsoft warns that Defender may detect a restored file again. See Microsoft’s Protection History guidance.
If the file exists outside the expected application or legacy Windows directory, scan the computer and investigate the executable requesting it before allowing that program to run.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall the related driver only when the error identifies one
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
A fax device, modem, scanner, or printer driver can be involved in an old fax workflow, but awbmsc32.dll itself is not established as a modern hardware driver file. Do not replace unrelated drivers just because the filename contains “32.”
Use Device Manager only when the error started after connecting, removing, or updating a specific device.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Modems, Printers, Imaging devices, Network adapters, and Sound, video and game controllers as relevant.
- Right-click the device associated with the fax or messaging software.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider and date.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the same Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver, when available. Otherwise, uninstall the device and restart so Windows can detect it again.
Device Manager will not recreate awbmsc32.dll. If the application still requests the file, reinstall the application or Microsoft Fax component.

When checking many devices manually becomes guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers; the free scan shows detected issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version, and it remains optional.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent removal
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
System Restore can undo a recent application installation, driver change, or component removal. It only helps if a restore point contains the complete software installation.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not guarantee that an old DLL will return. If the error remains, repair or reinstall the application from its original source. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
Fix 8: Run the legacy software in a preserved environment
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours
A current 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation may not support the complete Microsoft Fax environment, even if awbmsc32.dll is copied into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The file is associated with Windows 95-era 32-bit software. If the fax program is essential, use the original application inside a properly preserved Windows 95 or Windows 98 virtual machine, with installation media and backups available. Another practical solution is to replace the obsolete fax application with a supported fax workflow.
Windows compatibility settings may help some old programs, but they do not recreate missing Windows 9x components. To try them:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Test the application.
If the program still requests awbmsc32.dll, compatibility mode is not enough. Use the original legacy operating system environment or migrate away from the application.
Do not download awbmsc32.dll from a random website
A standalone DLL download can contain malware, be the wrong architecture, come from an unrelated Windows release, or be altered after being uploaded. Even a genuine-looking file may not fix the problem because Microsoft Fax uses a group of related files and configuration settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not place an unknown copy in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- An application folder
- A downloaded archive extracted without verification
The safe sources are:

- The original installer for the application requesting the file
- A legitimate Microsoft installation or repair process
- A clean backup of the same legacy installation
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET merely because a DLL is missing. Those packages do not correspond to this historical Microsoft Fax codec.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for repairing every missing DLL.
There is no verified evidence that awbmsc32.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX library. It is identified historically as a bitmap-scaling codec in the Microsoft Fax file group. Therefore, do not run:

unless the original application documentation specifically requires it. A registration error does not prove that the file is damaged, and successful registration would not recreate missing companion files.
Likely causes of the error
| Situation | Most likely explanation | Correct direction |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 95 or 98 system | Microsoft Fax installation is incomplete | Reinstall Microsoft Fax from matching media |
| Windows 10 or 11 after launching an old program | Legacy application expects Windows 9x files | Repair the application or use a virtual machine |
| Error appeared after uninstalling software | Startup entry or shortcut remains | Identify and remove or reinstall the parent program |
| File was downloaded separately | Wrong, unsafe, or mismatched DLL | Delete it and reinstall the parent software |
| Error followed antivirus detection | File was quarantined or altered | Check Protection History and verify provenance |
| Error appears with broader Windows corruption | Current component damage may be present | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Error names a fax device or modem workflow | Related driver or old hardware software may be involved | Check Device Manager, then reinstall the fax software |
Frequently asked questions
Is awbmsc32.dll a genuine Windows file?
Yes. Historical Windows 95 installation listings identify it as a Microsoft Fax-related 32-bit DLL and describe it as a bit-scaling or bitmap-scaling codec. That does not mean every copy with this name is safe. Location, origin, and the program requesting it still matter.
Is awbmsc32.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
There is no good evidence that current Windows 10 or Windows 11 ships with or uses this DLL. Modern Windows bitmap scaling is documented through Windows Imaging Component and Windowscodecs.dll, not this Windows 95-era file.
Should I install a Visual C++ Redistributable?
No, not for this error alone. Visual C++ packages address applications built with Microsoft C++ runtimes. The evidence connects awbmsc32.dll to Microsoft Fax, not to a current Visual C++ runtime.
Should I copy the file into System32?
No. Manual copying is appropriate only when extracting the exact file from matching original Windows installation media as part of repairing that legacy installation. A random copy can be unsafe and may still leave the application broken.
Should I use System32 or SysWOW64 for a 32-bit DLL?
Do not choose a folder based only on the filename. Windows 64-bit file redirection and application-specific loading rules make manual placement unreliable. Repair the parent application or run the complete legacy software in its intended environment.
Can SFC restore this file?
SFC repairs protected files belonging to the current Windows installation. It is not established as a way to restore this Windows 95-era Microsoft Fax DLL on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
When should I reinstall Windows?
A clean Windows reinstall should be a last resort. First identify the requesting program, repair or reinstall that program, check Defender, and run DISM and SFC if there are broader Windows problems. Reinstalling Windows 10 or Windows 11 will not necessarily add Microsoft Fax or restore this legacy DLL.
What information should I provide if the error continues?
Record the exact message, Windows version and architecture, program name, executable path, DLL path if shown, recent uninstall or update, and whether the software runs on physical hardware or in a virtual machine. Also note whether other aw*.dll files are missing. That information distinguishes a damaged application from an unsupported legacy environment.
