Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a new local file, send an HTTPS POST request to the relevant Telegram Bot API method with a PHP CURLFile in the CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS array. PHP will encode the array as multipart/form-data, which Telegram requires for file uploads. If Telegram already stores the file, use its file_id when the target method accepts it to avoid sending the file bytes again.
Upload a local file with PHP cURL
Use the file parameter documented for the Bot API method you are calling. For example, sendDocument accepts a document parameter. Put that parameter and ordinary values such as chat_id in one PHP array, then pass the array to CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS.

<?php
$ch = curl_init('https://api.telegram.org/bot' . $token . '/sendDocument');
$postFields = [
'chat_id' => $chatId,
'document' => new CURLFile($path, $mimeType, basename($path)),
];
curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_POST, true);
curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS, $postFields);
curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, true);
$response = curl_exec($ch);
if ($response === false) {
$error = curl_error($ch);
curl_close($ch);
throw new RuntimeException($error);
}
$httpStatus = curl_getinfo($ch, CURLINFO_HTTP_CODE);
curl_close($ch);
$result = json_decode($response, true);
if (!is_array($result) || empty($result['ok'])) {
// Inspect $httpStatus and Telegram's response, including its description.
}
This is an implementation pattern, not a tested drop-in function: define and validate $token, $chatId, $path, and $mimeType in your application. Check that the local file exists and is readable before making the request, and do not expose the bot token. Telegram requires HTTPS, and its API response includes an ok Boolean; a request can fail at the cURL transport layer or return an API-level error, so handle both. See the Telegram Bot API.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →PHP documents CURLFile specifically for uploading files through CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS. Its constructor takes the local filename and optionally a MIME type and posted filename. The class is available from PHP 5.5 and in PHP 7 and 8; constructor nullability defaults differ by PHP version, so check the manual for your runtime: CURLFile and CURLFile::__construct.

Keep the multipart boundary intact
Passing an array to CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS makes PHP cURL create a multipart request. Do not replace it with a JSON body: Telegram excludes file uploads from JSON request bodies. Also avoid setting a bare Content-Type: multipart/form-data header yourself; the generated request needs a boundary, which cURL supplies when it builds the multipart body. See the PHP curl_setopt documentation.
Choose between a local upload, a URL, and a file_id
The right approach depends on where the file is and whether Telegram already has it. A file upload transmits bytes from your application; a URL lets Telegram retrieve the file; a file_id points to a file already on Telegram’s servers.
Rank #2
| Option | Where the file is | Does your request send file bytes? | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
Multipart upload with CURLFile |
On the machine running your PHP application | Yes | A readable local path and a method that accepts a file upload |
| HTTP URL | At an Internet-accessible URL | No; Telegram fetches it | A URL and a method that accepts a URL for that file parameter |
file_id |
Already stored on Telegram | No; Telegram reuses its stored file | An existing ID accepted by the target method |
Telegram describes the URL and file_id options in its file-sending documentation. A URL is useful when Telegram can fetch the resource directly; reuse a file_id when the file is already there. For a private or otherwise locally available file, upload it from your application.
Reuse a Telegram file_id
When Telegram returns a file identifier, retain it with enough context to select it correctly later, such as the file’s purpose and the bot that obtained it. On a later send, put the identifier in the file parameter supported by the method instead of constructing a CURLFile. This avoids transferring the same file bytes from your server again. Telegram says file IDs can be treated as persistent in its Bots FAQ, but your application should still handle a rejected ID or a method mismatch as an API error rather than assuming every stored value will work in every context.
Check Telegram’s file-size limits
Telegram’s current Bot FAQ, checked October 7, 2026, states that bots can send files of any type up to 50 MB. The same FAQ gives a separate 20 MB limit for files downloaded with getFile. The download figure is not the upload limit; confirm the live FAQ before deployment because these documented limits can change. Source: Telegram Bots FAQ.
Quick Recap

Troubleshoot failed uploads
- cURL returns
false: inspectcurl_error(). This indicates a transport problem, distinct from Telegram’s JSON result. - Telegram returns
ok: false: inspect the response description and HTTP status to identify the API-level failure. - The file parameter is rejected: verify the method’s documented parameter name and whether it accepts a local upload, URL, or
file_id. - The request is not recognized as an upload: pass the fields array containing a
CURLFiletoCURLOPT_POSTFIELDS; do not JSON-encode it or omit the multipart boundary by manually setting the content type. - The file is too large: compare its size against Telegram’s current sending limit, not the separate
getFiledownload limit.
