Edits you make to a Google Sheets file while offline are saved on your device, and they reach Google Drive once your connection returns. That sync only works if you prepared the file for offline use while you still had internet access. Here is how to set that up, what happens when you reconnect, and what to do if Sheets reports that it cannot save.
Prepare the file before you lose connection
Offline editing is a setup step, not something Sheets switches on automatically. Google’s help documentation for Drive describes the following requirements for offline Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides on the web:

- A supported browser: Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Google’s instructions say not to use private browsing.
- The Google Docs Offline extension installed in that browser.
- Enough free storage on the device to hold the local copies.
With those in place, the setup sequence is:
- Open drive.google.com in Chrome or Edge while online.
- Click the gear icon, open Settings, and turn on the offline option for Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides files. Its label reads along the lines of “Sync Google Docs, Sheets, Slides & Drawings files to this computer so that you can edit offline.”
- In Drive, right-click the Google Sheets file you need and choose the option to make it available offline.
Repeat step 3 for every spreadsheet you expect to use on the road. A file you did not prepare is not reliably available offline, so check before you leave a network.
Edit offline, then reconnect
While the device is offline, keep working in the sheet as normal. Google states that offline edits are saved on the device and are saved to Drive once you reconnect. Its Drive offline instructions say the changes are implemented when you are back online. You do not need to export or re-upload anything.

Give the sheet a few moments on a stable connection after reconnecting. Sheets uploads the local changes in the background, so a brief pause or a reload too early can make it look like nothing synced.
Check the result and avoid overwrites
Once the sync finishes, open the file’s version history to confirm your edits are there. In the sheet, go to File > Version history > See version history.

Google warns that new changes overwrite previous changes. If the same file was edited from more than one offline copy, review the version history afterward and reconcile any differences by hand. Google’s help material does not describe how simultaneous offline edits from several copies are merged, so do not assume the system will combine them for you.

Sometimes you will see the message “Can’t save your changes. Please copy your recent edits then revert your changes.” Google says a connection glitch can trigger it. Work through these steps in order:

- Copy the unsaved edits first. Select the cells you changed and copy them somewhere safe, such as a new sheet or a text file, before anything else.
- Reload the sheet. Close the tab, reopen the file, and paste your copied edits back in.
- Reconnect if the error returns. Disconnect from the network, reconnect, and try again.
- Switch to offline mode in Chrome or Edge if the problem persists. Google suggests this so local changes can upload once a stable internet connection returns.
Browser offline access versus Drive for desktop
Drive for desktop is a separate file-sync tool, and it is easy to confuse with the browser-based offline setup described above. Google directs users to Drive on the web for offline Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. The two approaches differ as follows:

If your goal is editing a Google Sheets file without connectivity, use the browser setup. Drive for desktop helps with general file access and is not a substitute for preparing a sheet in the browser.
