It may suit a short trip or light data use, but it is not a universal free plan: eligibility depends on where you are when claiming it, your phone must meet specific Android and eSIM requirements, and Opera’s list covers 47 destinations. For a longer trip, a multi-country itinerary, or a need for more data, compare the exact coverage, validity, and checkout price of other travel eSIM plans before choosing.
What Opera’s free eSIM includes
Opera announced its travel eSIM on September 29, 2026. Powered by Holiday.com and built into Opera for Android, the introductory free allowance is 3 GB for three days. Opera says users do not need to provide payment details or an email to claim it. The offer is limited to selected launch markets, so it is not a free plan available to every Opera user worldwide. Opera’s free-offer eligibility is based on the user’s location when claiming the promotion, not just the destination where they plan to use data. At launch, Opera listed users located in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Brazil, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Poland as eligible. Opera says paid plans can be purchased from anywhere in the world for supported destinations. Check the current in-app offer and destination list before relying on either. Opera’s announcement

Because the free plan has a three-day validity and a capped 3 GB allowance, it is best treated as a short-term data option rather than a substitute for a full travel plan. Once the included data or validity runs out, Opera’s setup guidance says to buy a top-up while you still have internet access. Keep Wi-Fi or another connection available if you expect to need more data. Opera setup guide

Where Opera’s eSIM works
Opera lists 47 destinations for its eSIM. It says the service connects to 5G where local networks support it and falls back to the next-best network quality where they do not. Network performance still depends on the local operator and coverage at your location; a listed country is not a promise of 5G or signal everywhere. Confirm each country on your itinerary in the app, particularly for a multi-country trip. Opera’s announcement

Opera’s paid plans, validity, and costs
Opera’s paid country-specific plans come in 3 GB, 5 GB, and 10 GB tiers. Each is valid for 30 days, with the validity period beginning when the eSIM first connects in the destination country. Opera says the price varies by destination and data allowance, and displays the amount in the browser before purchase; there is no single worldwide price to compare. Its installation guidance says you can install the eSIM before departure. Opera’s announcement Opera setup guide

Opera has claimed its plans were around 33% cheaper on average than other major eSIM providers. That figure describes Opera’s own comparison of a 5 GB, 30-day US plan against six providers, using competitor prices recorded on August 24, 2026. It is a company comparison for that particular plan and date, not an independent audit or evidence that Opera is cheapest for another destination, plan size, or purchase date. Compare current checkout prices for the same destination, data allowance, and validity instead. Opera’s announcement
Opera vs. Airalo, Holafly, and Ubigi
There is no universal winner among travel eSIM providers. Coverage, data model, validity, device compatibility, and actual checkout prices can differ by destination and package. The provider pages describe different plan options but do not establish a stable, like-for-like price comparison with Opera.

| What to compare | Opera | Other travel eSIM plans |
|---|---|---|
| Destinations | 47 destinations listed by Opera; confirm the current in-app list for every country on your route. Opera | Airalo advertises destination, regional, and global eSIM choices; Holafly advertises regional and global options; Ubigi presents travel eSIM plans and global coverage. Exact country inclusion depends on the selected plan. Airalo Holafly Ubigi |
| Data allowance | Paid country-specific tiers of 3 GB, 5 GB, or 10 GB; free introductory allowance of 3 GB for three days where eligible. Opera | Airalo allowances vary by package. Holafly markets unlimited options, but check the specific plan’s conditions; “unlimited” alone does not establish unlimited high-speed hotspot use. Airalo Holafly |
| Validity | Paid data lasts 30 days from the eSIM’s first connection in the destination country. Opera setup guide | Airalo says validity depends on the package selected. Check the terms for the exact plan. Airalo |
| Price | Varies by destination and data amount; shown in the browser before purchase. Opera | A like-for-like current price is not established across providers; compare the checkout price for the same destination, allowance, and validity. |
| Phone and setup | Opera for Android, an eSIM-capable and carrier-unlocked phone, and Android 10 or newer are required. Opera | Requirements and activation steps vary by provider and package; verify them before purchase. |
| Multiple countries | Opera says one installed eSIM can be topped up for successive supported destinations; check that each destination is supported. Opera | Regional and global options are advertised by Airalo and Holafly, but the exact countries and terms depend on the chosen plan. Airalo Holafly |
| Voice and SMS | Data-only; it does not replace your existing phone number. Opera | Do not assume voice, SMS, or hotspot support from a provider’s general page; check the specific plan details. |
Check your phone and set up Opera eSIM
Opera’s eSIM is available through Opera for Android, not Opera Mini or Opera GX mobile. Your phone needs Android 10 or newer, eSIM support, and an unlocked carrier status. The service is data-only, so it does not replace your usual phone number. Opera’s announcement
Quick Recap
- Before you travel: Install the eSIM over a stable internet connection, following Opera’s setup instructions. You can install it before departure; the paid-plan validity clock starts when it first connects in the destination country. Opera setup guide
- After arrival: Turn on the eSIM and choose it for mobile data in your phone’s SIM settings. Opera setup guide
- Avoid accidental roaming: Turn off data roaming on your regular SIM to reduce the risk of roaming charges from your existing carrier. Opera setup guide
- Plan for a top-up: Buy additional data while you still have an internet connection; Opera says purchasing more data requires connectivity. Opera setup guide
Which option fits your trip?
- Consider Opera’s free offer if you are in an eligible launch market, have a compatible phone, are visiting a supported destination, and need no more than 3 GB over three days.
- Compare Opera’s paid tiers if a 3, 5, or 10 GB country-specific allowance for up to 30 days fits your data needs and route. Check the displayed price for your destination.
- Compare regional or global plans if your itinerary spans countries and you want to know whether one package covers the whole route. Airalo and Holafly advertise such options, but verify the included destinations and package terms.
- Check plan-specific conditions if you need more data, hotspot use, voice, or SMS. A provider’s general marketing description is not a substitute for the selected plan’s terms.
