No routine battery replacement is needed for a Citizen Eco-Drive watch. It runs on light and stores energy in a rechargeable power cell. If the watch stops, recharge it according to the instructions for its exact model before assuming the cell needs service. The cell can still require attention if it is damaged or the watch remains faulty.
How Eco-Drive power works
Citizen says Eco-Drive watches use natural or artificial light to generate and store energy, so they do not need routine battery changes to keep operating. Citizen describes the stored energy as being held in an energy cell; this is not the same maintenance pattern as replacing a conventional disposable watch battery.

That does not mean the power cell can never fail. Citizen warns that leaving an Eco-Drive watch in darkness for a long time can damage the cell. The amount of time a fully charged watch can run without light also varies by model and features: Citizen says many models run for more than six months in darkness, while some power-save models can last longer. If your Eco-Drive watch has stopped
Give it light before considering a replacement
A stopped watch may simply have run low on charge, particularly after extended storage in a drawer or other dark place. Citizen’s general guidance for basic analog Eco-Drive models gives these illustrative charging times:

These are Citizen’s general examples, not universal charging requirements. Charging time depends on the model and light conditions; follow the instructions for your watch rather than treating the figures as a guaranteed result. See Citizen’s Eco-Drive charging guidance.
Identify the caliber and troubleshoot by model
If charging does not get the watch running reliably, look up the caliber and consult its specific instructions. Citizen’s troubleshooting guidance says a watch that is not keeping time may need recharging, battery replacement, or winding depending on its caliber. Do not assume that every Eco-Drive model has the same controls or remedy. If the model-specific steps do not resolve the problem, contact Citizen or a qualified service provider. Should you buy a replacement power cell?
Not before diagnosis. A replacement cell is appropriate only if the watch’s condition and model-specific guidance indicate that service is needed. Cell compatibility cannot be inferred from the Eco-Drive name alone. For example, Citizen lists a rechargeable 3.7V Maxell power cell for the Eco-Drive One AR5055-58E with caliber 8826; that product-specific detail does not establish that the cell fits other Eco-Drive watches. Citizen’s AR5055-58E product page identifies the cell for that model.
