Opera suits people who want built-in convenience tools such as a browser VPN, ad and tracker blocking, and Flow. Firefox is a better fit for readers who prioritize privacy controls, customization, PDF editing, and local page translation. Neither browser can be named the overall winner on the evidence available here: the vendors describe different features, and there is no comparable independent test establishing a speed, battery-life, or privacy winner.
Opera vs Firefox at a glance
| What matters | Opera | Firefox |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy features | Opera promotes built-in ad and tracker blocking and a browser VPN. These are vendor-described features, not an independent privacy ranking. | Mozilla promotes Firefox’s default privacy settings and fingerprinting protections. The comparative claim comes from Mozilla, not neutral testing. |
| VPN details | Opera says its free browser VPN is unlimited and does not require an account. Public or unsecured Wi-Fi auto-activation on desktop was opt-in and rolling out to users in the US and France as of September 24, 2026. | The reviewed Mozilla comparison and release notes do not provide equivalent VPN details. That does not establish that Firefox has no VPN option. |
| Built-in tools | Opera highlights Flow, Battery Saver, ad blocking, tracker blocking, and its browser VPN. | Mozilla highlights PDF editing, local page translation, interface customization, and a browser-data import workflow. |
| Performance evidence | Opera advertises Battery Saver as extending unplugged laptop battery life by up to 35%; this is a vendor claim, not a controlled comparison with Firefox. | No comparable battery measurement was established for Firefox. |
The feature descriptions above come from Opera’s comparison page and Mozilla’s comparison page. Neither page is an independent head-to-head assessment.

Which browser is better for privacy?
There is no neutral, comparable privacy score here that establishes one browser as better overall. Mozilla says Firefox has stronger default privacy settings and describes built-in fingerprinting protections; that is Mozilla’s own comparison. Opera promotes ad and tracker blocking and a built-in VPN. Those features may matter to a user’s privacy choices, but their presence alone does not prove that Opera provides better privacy in every situation.
Opera also says its free browser VPN is unlimited, accountless, and covered by a no-log policy. Opera states that Deloitte audited the policy in 2024, and that Cure53 tested the VPN security code in 2022. These are claims Opera makes about its service and the audits it reports; they are not a guarantee of anonymity or security under all conditions. A browser VPN also should not be treated as proof that every kind of browsing data is protected.

Does Opera or Firefox have a built-in VPN?
Opera documents a free browser VPN and describes it as unlimited and accountless. Its September 24, 2026 newsroom announcement said desktop VPN auto-activation on public or unsecured Wi-Fi was opt-in and rolling out to users in the United States and France. That rollout detail is not evidence of worldwide availability. Check Opera’s current product information for availability and terms in your location.
The reviewed Mozilla comparison and release notes do not give matching details about a Firefox VPN. The evidence therefore supports describing Opera’s offering, but not making a blanket claim that Firefox has no VPN. In either case, confirm the feature’s platform, region, and service terms before relying on it.

Which browser has the more useful built-in tools?
Opera: connected convenience features
Opera promotes Flow for sharing content between devices, along with ad and tracker blocking and Battery Saver. Its integrated VPN is another convenience for users who want a browser-level option without installing a separate extension. Whether these tools suit you depends on which tasks you actually use; their inclusion does not establish that Opera is faster or more private overall.

And side-to-side scrolling plus zoom gives you the power to scroll horizontally and vertically through your music library, maps and Facebook feeds, and zoom in and out of photos and budget spreadsheets with a click.* * Requires Logitech SetPoint software (Windows) or Logitech Control Center software (Mac OS X)
- Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
- The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
Which is faster, Opera or Firefox?
The available evidence does not support a speed winner. There is no current controlled independent test here that compares page loading, memory use, battery life, or site compatibility under a stated workload and on identified devices and browser versions. Opera’s claim that Battery Saver can extend unplugged laptop battery life by up to 35% is promotional and is not a like-for-like Firefox comparison. Treat it as Opera’s feature claim, not a result that predicts what will happen on your computer.
What do the current release details establish?
Mozilla’s release notes say Firefox 157.0.1 was first offered to Release-channel users on October 6, 2026. They list fixes involving macOS downloads, a stuck sidebar, Windows backup onboarding, and a security issue. This is a dated Firefox release marker, not a direct feature or performance comparison.

Opera’s comparison page says its comparison information is current as of January 2026. It does not establish Opera’s current desktop release version as of October 2026, so the available version information is asymmetric.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich one should you choose?
- Choose Opera if you value its integrated browser VPN and the convenience tools Opera promotes, including Flow and Battery Saver.
- Choose Firefox if Mozilla’s stated privacy controls, customization, PDF editing, local translation, or its Opera import workflow better match your needs.
- Do not choose on an assumed speed or battery winner: the evidence here does not provide a controlled, independent comparison.
Opera’s Head of Opera One Engineering, Arjan van Leeuwen, described the company’s position in a September 24, 2026 newsroom post: “That’s why we continue supporting and improving our free browser VPN, making sure that Opera users always have the tools they need, when they need them.” This is a statement about Opera’s product priorities, not an independent assessment of the service.
