Opera announced Opera Developer 138.0.6038.0 on October 1, 2026, with Chromium updated to 153.0.8010.5. The release focuses on Opera’s new React-based Settings and Vertical Tabs, but Opera also lists a current known issue: Speed Dial folders cannot be created in this build.
What’s new in Opera 138 Developer?
Opera’s October 1 release announcement describes a large batch of fixes across Settings, Vertical Tabs and general stability. The principal changes are in the new React-based Settings experience and tab layout controls.

React-based Settings
- Settings deep links now open the correct pages.
- Sync works again, with open-tab details restored.
- Settings search now updates the URL while keeping search phrases intact.
- Windows dropdown styling, spell-check language options and layout inconsistencies received fixes.
- Popup warnings about sound use in Easy Setup and Settings were addressed.
Vertical Tabs and other fixes
- Vertical Tabs now remember their collapsed or expanded state separately for each window. A newly opened window inherits the state of the last open window.
- Opera fixed tab search when sidebars are hidden and clicks that did not work after switching layouts.
- The announcement also lists fixes for missing labels and icons, hidden Early Bird features, blocker exceptions and VPN Pro status styling.
Which Chromium version does Opera 138 Developer use?
Opera reports that version 138.0.6038.0 is based on Chromium 153.0.8010.5. These are version identifiers for this specific Developer build, announced October 1, 2026; they do not establish an independently measured performance or security advantage.

No. Opera identified creating Speed Dial folders as a known issue in its October 1 announcement and said it was investigating. That is the status reported for build 138.0.6038.0; it should not be assumed to describe a later Developer build.

Should you install Opera Developer or stay on Stable?
Opera positions Developer as an early-access channel for changes that are still in development. Its Developer channel page warns that experiments may be unstable, may crash, and may never reach Stable. Opera describes Stable as the more reliable choice for everyday browsing.

The release post lists a Windows installer and portable option, macOS, and Linux packages in deb and RPM formats. The announcement says that using the Windows installer means accepting Opera’s Computers EULA. Because Developer builds move quickly, check Opera’s release page for the current build and download links rather than assuming 138.0.6038.0 remains the latest version.
