Short answer: WeatherAPI.com is the strongest default for an Android app that needs a wide, well-documented forecast and history feature set. OpenWeather is the clearest low-cost choice when transparent quotas and a permanent free baseline matter most. Tomorrow.io is the better fit for hyperlocal layers, map tiles, monitoring, alerts, and route-oriented products. None is universally “most accurate”; you should validate forecast error in the locations and horizons your app actually serves.
The right choice depends on more than the weather response. Quota accounting, forecast timesteps, historical depth, map delivery, alert workflows, Android integration effort, and the way you protect and cache API calls can affect both user experience and operating cost.

OpenWeather: the transparent low-cost generalist
What the free tier actually includes
OpenWeather’s listed free access provides 60 calls per minute and 1,000,000 calls per month for current weather and 5-day/3-hour forecast products. That combination is useful for prototypes, small consumer apps, classroom projects and production services with predictable, moderate traffic. The monthly allowance is large enough for many read-only screens if the app caches results instead of requesting a new forecast every time a user opens the activity.

The free baseline is not a blanket entitlement to every OpenWeather product. Newer minute-level capabilities, longer-range products and some specialized endpoints can require a different plan. Select the exact endpoint first, then verify that endpoint’s entitlement and counting rules.
When the Startup plan makes sense
The listed Startup plan costs $40 per month and raises the limits to 600 calls per minute and 10 million calls per month. This is a straightforward upgrade path when your request volume has outgrown the free monthly ceiling but your product does not need a map-heavy or highly specialized workflow. Treat the price and quotas as the 2026 listing, not a permanent price promise; recheck the official pricing page before launch.
Product surface and trade-offs
OpenWeather documents current conditions, hourly and daily forecasts, alerts, historical data and a unified timeline API. Its broad product ecosystem can reduce the number of vendors in a conventional weather app. The trade-off is product selection: the free current-plus-5-day offering is not equivalent to a full minute-by-minute or long-horizon package, so an apparently simple feature request may move you to another endpoint or plan.
WeatherAPI.com: the broadest forecast and history package
Forecast windows for planning features
WeatherAPI.com advertises 14-day daily, hourly and 15-minute forecasts. It also lists future weather up to 365 days and hourly historical weather from 2010. Those windows are useful for applications that show more than “today and tomorrow”: agricultural planning, travel calendars, event planning, energy dashboards and analytics that compare a future date with a historical baseline.

A 15-minute timestep is not automatically a guarantee of 15-minute forecast accuracy. It describes the granularity of returned data. Your interface should communicate the forecast horizon and update time rather than implying that every value is an observation.
One API for adjacent data
The same product page advertises air-quality, pollen, marine, astronomy, sports, currency, map and geocoding APIs. Consolidating those datasets can simplify authentication, request models and vendor management when your Android app combines weather with location or activity context. Confirm that each ancillary API is included in the plan you intend to buy; the reviewed product material does not state a quota figure comparable to OpenWeather’s published 60-calls-per-minute and monthly limits.
Quota planning before implementation
Because a directly comparable quota number was not exposed on the reviewed official product page, do not infer capacity from the forecast ranges. Ask for the current plan table, the per-minute and monthly limits, burst behavior, and how batch or multi-location calls are counted. Size traffic from your own request model: active users multiplied by screens, refreshes, locations and forecast types, with a safety margin for retries.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

What the free plan covers
Tomorrow.io’s free plan lists a 5-day forecast, 24 hours of historical weather, one automatically monitored location, one weather alert and core weather layers. It is a practical sandbox for testing a location-aware feature, but the single monitored location and one-alert allowance are restrictive for a multi-city consumer app or a logistics operation.

More fields and explicit timesteps
The documentation describes more than 80 data fields. On the free offering, 1-hour and 1-day timesteps span from 24 hours back through 5 days forward; premium ranges extend farther. The field breadth is useful when your screen needs several signals—such as precipitation type, wind, visibility or soil-related indicators—without stitching together many providers. Map the exact fields you use to the plan and endpoint, because “more than 80” is a catalog breadth statement, not a promise that every field is available at every timestep or tier.
Map tiles and spatial interfaces
Tomorrow.io’s Map API provides tiles for the last 7 days and next 14 days, at zoom levels 1 through 12. The tiles can be integrated with common Android map libraries to create precipitation, temperature or other weather overlays. Historical and forecast windows are explicit, which helps you design a time slider without requesting unsupported dates.
Monitoring, alerts and route use cases
Tomorrow.io is a natural candidate for apps that must watch a location and react to changing conditions: delivery routes, field operations, outdoor-event safety, or a map that highlights weather risk. The provider’s usage rule is concise: “1 endpoint + 1 location = 1 API call.” Map tiles are counted per tile. A screen that redraws a map across many tiles can therefore consume calls much faster than a single point forecast.
Quotas, request accounting and cost modeling
Model usage before choosing a provider. A simple point forecast may need one endpoint and one location, while a map view can request dozens of tiles and a dashboard may request several data types for the same location.

- List every request. Separate current conditions, hourly forecast, daily forecast, historical lookup, geocoding, alerts and map tiles.
- Count locations. Include the device location, saved favorites, route waypoints and any server-side locations used for notifications.
- Count refreshes. Define foreground refresh, background work, pull-to-refresh and retry behavior independently.
- Apply caching. Reuse a forecast until its freshness window expires rather than fetching on every screen navigation.
- Add failure traffic. Retries, timeouts and app-start bursts need headroom in both per-minute and monthly limits.
- Compare against the provider’s definition. Tomorrow.io counts endpoint-plus-location requests and map tiles per tile; other providers may bundle or count products differently.
For OpenWeather, you can compare the modeled total directly with the published 1,000,000-call free allowance or 10-million-call Startup allowance. For WeatherAPI.com and Tomorrow.io, use the current plan tables and documented counting rules rather than borrowing OpenWeather’s figures.

Accuracy: how to choose without a misleading universal ranking
The official materials reviewed for these services describe capabilities and plan limits, but they do not provide a neutral, directly comparable accuracy benchmark for all three vendors across Android-relevant geographies. A claim that one provider is simply “the most accurate” would therefore be unsupported.
Measure accuracy for your own target locations and use cases:
- Choose representative coordinates: urban, coastal, mountainous and rural areas if your audience spans them.
- Choose horizons that match the UI, such as next-hour precipitation, 24-hour temperature and five-day highs and lows.
- Replay archived forecasts or export forecasts at fixed lead times, then compare them with a consistent observation source.
- Score temperature error, precipitation event detection, precipitation amount and wind error separately. A provider can be strong on temperature and weak on rain timing.
- Track results by season and geography. A national average can hide poor performance in the locations that matter most to your users.
- Repeat the evaluation after launch to detect model or endpoint drift.
Use the resulting error profile, along with latency and quota cost, to select a provider or a primary-and-fallback design. Do not present internal scores as universal scientific rankings unless your methodology supports that claim.

Adding a weather API to an Android app
1. Keep credentials out of the APK when possible
Putting a long-lived provider key directly in a released Android binary makes extraction easier. A safer architecture sends the app’s request to your server, where the server stores the provider key, applies quotas and returns only the fields the app needs. If a direct client request is unavoidable for a prototype, restrict the key by product, rotate it, monitor use and assume that obfuscation is not a security boundary.
2. Define a small repository interface
Hide provider-specific response models behind an app interface such as WeatherRepository. Convert each vendor’s JSON into your own immutable model containing location, observation time, forecast intervals, units, condition code and source status. This keeps UI code stable if you change providers or add a fallback.
3. Configure Android networking
- Add the
android.permission.INTERNETpermission to the manifest. - Use an HTTPS-capable client such as OkHttp, with a serialization layer for JSON (or XML if you select WeatherAPI.com’s XML option).
- Set connection, read and write timeouts. A weather screen should fail quickly enough to show cached data rather than blocking indefinitely.
- Log status codes and request identifiers without logging API keys or precise user locations unnecessarily.
- Use structured concurrency so a cancelled screen does not leave a request running in the background.
Tomorrow.io’s official Android Studio walkthrough is the most explicit of the three in the reviewed material: it uses Kotlin, OkHttp, an API key and the INTERNET permission. The same Android networking principles apply to OpenWeather and WeatherAPI.com.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →4. Cache and refresh deliberately
Store the last successful response with its provider timestamp, request time and expiry policy. Display cached data with a visible “updated” time when the network is unavailable. Refresh on app foreground only when the cache is stale, and use scheduled background work for alerts or widgets only when the product requirement justifies the extra calls.
5. Handle rate limits and transient failures
- HTTP 429 or provider-specific quota error: stop immediate retries, honor any retry-after value, increase the backoff delay and serve cached data.
- Timeout or connectivity failure: retry a limited number of times with exponential backoff, then show the last known forecast and an offline state.
- Authentication error: disable repeated retries, verify the server-side key and surface an operational alert to your team.
- Malformed or partial data: validate units, timestamps and nullable fields before rendering; do not substitute zero for missing precipitation or wind.
- Location failure: let users search or select a saved location instead of repeatedly requesting GPS.
Maps and overlays on Android
A map screen has a different performance and cost profile from a point forecast. Choose a tile layer and map library that support the zoom range and coordinate projection you need, then request tiles only for the visible region. Debounce pan and zoom events, cancel obsolete requests, and cache recently viewed tiles. A time slider should reuse the provider’s documented historical and forecast windows—in Tomorrow.io’s case, the previous 7 days and next 14 days—rather than probing unsupported timestamps.
Do not treat every tile as a free visual decoration. Tomorrow.io counts map tiles per tile, so a high-zoom screen over a large area can consume substantially more calls than a single-location card. Estimate tiles per viewport, user pans per session and refreshes per hour before enabling automatic animation.
Which API should your Android project choose?
Choose OpenWeather when
- You need a conventional current-weather and five-day forecast app.
- A published free allowance of 60 calls per minute and 1,000,000 calls per month simplifies initial capacity planning.
- You want a documented upgrade example at $40 per month for 600 calls per minute and 10 million calls per month.
- You prefer a broad general-purpose ecosystem and can verify the exact endpoint for advanced features.
Choose WeatherAPI.com when
- Your product needs 14-day daily, hourly and 15-minute forecasts.
- Historical analysis requires hourly data advertised from 2010.
- You want weather combined with air quality, pollen, marine, astronomy, sports, currency, map or geocoding data.
- You are willing to confirm current quotas and pricing before calculating production capacity.
Choose Tomorrow.io when
- Weather maps, overlays, monitoring or alerts are core product features.
- You need more than 80 documented data fields and explicit hourly or daily timesteps.
- Your workflow is hyperlocal, route-oriented or operational rather than just a static forecast card.
- You can model endpoint-plus-location usage and per-tile map consumption.
Use a measured hybrid strategy when
Your app serves several distinct jobs—for example, a low-cost forecast card plus a specialized map or alert layer. Keep the provider boundary in the repository layer, normalize units and timestamps, and define which source wins when both return data. A hybrid design adds operational complexity and may cost more, so adopt it only when measurement shows that one provider cannot meet the required feature, latency or reliability target.
