OpenClaw vs NemoClaw: Which Should You Run in 2026?

OpenClaw is a flexible self-hosted assistant; NemoClaw governs OpenClaw inside NVIDIA OpenShell sandboxes. This guide compares security, model choice, operations, setup, and use cases.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run OpenClaw if you want a flexible, self-hosted assistant that can use local or hosted models, connect to many messaging channels, and remain under your direct control. Run NemoClaw if an always-on agent must operate inside enforced security, network, credential, and lifecycle policies. NemoClaw does not replace OpenClaw: it packages OpenClaw (or another supported agent runtime) inside NVIDIA OpenShell sandboxes.

For a self-hosted deployment, Antihost VPS provides a Linux VPS with a one-click OpenClaw image and full root access, so you can run the Gateway on infrastructure you administer.

What you are actually choosing

OpenClaw and NemoClaw are not two equivalent assistant applications. OpenClaw is the assistant runtime: it receives requests, invokes tools, keeps state and memory, and connects to channels such as Discord, iMessage, Slack, Teams, Telegram, and WhatsApp. NemoClaw is a governed deployment stack. It supplies a repeatable way to install and operate a supported agent, normally OpenClaw, inside an NVIDIA OpenShell sandbox.

That distinction explains most of the practical differences. With a direct OpenClaw installation, you decide where the Gateway runs, which tools can reach the host, which model providers receive data, and whether any remote access is exposed. With NemoClaw, OpenShell becomes the enforcement point for network, filesystem, process, authentication, inference, credentials, and lifecycle policy. You give up some deployment freedom in exchange for stronger, more explicit guardrails.

OpenClaw: the direct, flexible option

A local Gateway is the center of the system

OpenClaw uses a local Gateway that serves the command-line interface, dashboard, terminal user interface, and channel connections. The Gateway coordinates conversations, tools, memory, and provider requests. State, credentials, and other operational data can remain on the computer you administer rather than being stored in a vendor-hosted assistant service.

The project describes itself as an open-source assistant that works across operating systems and platforms. Its documentation presents no paid tier and no hosted service. You supply the machine, the model access, and the operational controls.

Hosted and local models can be swapped

OpenClaw can connect to hosted model providers or to models running locally. That lets you choose between the convenience and capacity of a remote provider and the data-locality or offline characteristics of a local model. The trade-off is yours to manage: provider authentication, model availability, hardware capacity, and data-routing decisions are not abstracted away by a hosted OpenClaw service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Channels and extensions are the main attraction

The assistant can be reached through multiple messaging systems, and its capabilities can be extended with tools, skills, plugins, and model-provider integrations. This makes OpenClaw a good fit when you want to experiment with an unusual workflow, add a channel, or change providers without adopting a fixed platform design.

Security is an operator responsibility

OpenClaw documentation warns that unknown senders should be paired before they can use the assistant and that host tools need careful configuration before remote exposure. OpenClaw can be sandboxed, but that is a configuration choice made by the operator. A direct installation therefore requires you to design the exposure boundary, restrict credentials, review tools, and keep the Gateway and its dependencies maintained.

NemoClaw: the governed deployment stack

It wraps an agent; it does not replace one

NVIDIA defines NemoClaw as an open-source reference stack for running supported and qualified agent runtimes more safely inside NVIDIA OpenShell sandboxes. NVIDIA’s architecture documentation is explicit that NemoClaw does not replace OpenShell or the selected agent runtime. Instead, it packages them with a versioned blueprint, agent-specific configuration, managed inference, network policy, and lifecycle operations.

OpenClaw is the default agent selected by NemoClaw’s onboarding flow, but the NemoClaw CLI can list and select other supported agents. The practical result is “OpenClaw under governance,” not a separate assistant with a different conversation model.

The host and sandbox have different jobs

NemoClaw’s architecture separates the host CLI, the OpenShell Gateway, the sandbox, the agent integration layer, inference providers, approved integrations, and managed state. The operator keeps control on the host, while OpenShell enforces the boundary around the running agent.

  • Programming Lessons: This raspberry pi 5 learning kit ships with step by step instructions and provides 21 lessons to take you through identifying components reading code and running it in the terminal

Inference-provider credentials and managed MCP bearer values are stored outside the sandbox and injected only at approved request boundaries. This reduces the need to place long-lived secrets in the agent’s filesystem or environment, while still allowing the agent to call authorized services.

Onboarding creates a repeatable deployment

The NemoClaw setup flow can create or connect an OpenShell Gateway, register inference providers, select a managed image or a custom Dockerfile, and create the sandbox. A versioned blueprint and readiness checks make the resulting environment more reproducible than an ad hoc collection of host settings, although they also add configuration and lifecycle work.

Security: what changes for an always-on agent?

The most important difference appears when an assistant runs continuously, accepts messages from outside your immediate workstation, or can modify files and call network services. OpenClaw leaves the boundary design to you. NemoClaw supplies deny-by-default controls enforced by OpenShell.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Control area Direct OpenClaw NemoClaw with OpenShell
Network access You configure exposure, outbound access, and any sandboxing. Policy-controlled network namespace isolation, network rules, and SSRF protection are enforced by OpenShell.
Filesystem Tools run on the host for the main session unless you configure a sandbox. The agent runs inside a sandbox with policy-defined filesystem boundaries.
Processes Host process access depends on the tools and permissions you grant. OpenShell applies process restrictions, including seccomp filters.
Gateway authentication You must secure the Gateway and any remote path yourself. Gateway authentication and TLS termination are part of the OpenShell enforcement layer.
Inference and credentials You select providers and protect their credentials in your deployment. Managed provider credentials and approved MCP bearer values remain outside the sandbox and are injected at controlled boundaries.
Policy defaults Safety depends on your configuration choices and ongoing review. NemoClaw ships deny-by-default policy across network, filesystem, process, gateway-authentication, and inference layers.

These controls do not make an agent automatically safe. A permissive policy, an overpowered integration, or an incorrectly approved tool can still create risk. They do, however, give an organization a defined enforcement point instead of relying only on the runtime’s configuration and the host administrator’s discipline.

Installation and day-to-day operation

OpenClaw installation path

  1. Choose a machine and model route. Decide whether the Gateway will use hosted providers, local models, or both. Plan where state and credentials will live and whether the machine is allowed to receive messages from outside your local network.
  2. Install for your operating system. OpenClaw documents shell installers for macOS and Linux, a WSL2 path, and Windows PowerShell installation, as well as an npm installation route. Use the installer appropriate to the machine rather than exposing a development workstation unnecessarily.
  3. Complete onboarding. Configure the Gateway, provider credentials, and the channels you intend to use. Pair unknown senders before allowing them to message the assistant.
  4. Verify the Gateway. Run openclaw gateway status and confirm that the service is running and reachable only where intended.
  5. Open the local control surface. Run openclaw dashboard to inspect and manage the installation. The terminal user interface and CLI provide additional operating paths.
  6. Add capabilities gradually. Enable channels, tools, skills, plugins, and providers one at a time. Review the permissions and data path of each addition before granting it access to host files or external services.
  7. Choose a boundary for host tools. If the assistant will handle untrusted messages or run continuously, configure sandboxing and network restrictions before remote exposure. A direct installation does not impose those boundaries for you.

NemoClaw installation path

  1. Prepare the OpenShell environment. Install NVIDIA’s NemoClaw package and ensure the host can run the OpenShell Gateway and the selected sandbox image or custom Dockerfile.
  2. Start the wizard. Run nemoclaw onboard. The wizard guides Gateway creation or connection, inference-provider registration, image selection, and sandbox creation.
  3. Select the agent runtime. OpenClaw is the default choice. If your deployment requires another supported agent, use the CLI’s agent-listing and selection options during onboarding.
  4. Register inference access. Configure the managed inference route or another supported provider. Keep provider secrets in the managed credential path rather than copying them into the sandbox.
  5. Choose the image boundary. Use a managed image for the documented path or provide a custom Dockerfile when your approved agent and dependencies require one. A custom image increases your responsibility for updates and compatibility.
  6. Review policy and integrations. Approve only the network destinations, MCP services, files, and tools the workflow needs. Deny-by-default behavior is useful only if exceptions are deliberate and narrow.
  7. Run readiness and lifecycle checks. Confirm that the Gateway, sandbox, provider route, and integrations are healthy before directing real conversations to the agent. Treat sandbox creation, updates, shutdown, and recreation as managed lifecycle operations rather than one-time installation steps.

Flexibility versus governance

Decision axis OpenClaw NemoClaw
Primary purpose A self-hosted, extensible assistant runtime. A governed stack for running OpenClaw or another supported runtime.
Operating-system reach Documentation covers macOS, Linux, WSL2, and Windows PowerShell installation paths. Deployment choices are shaped by the supported NemoClaw/OpenShell blueprint and host requirements.
Model choice Hosted and local providers can be selected and swapped by the operator. Managed inference routes and approved providers are configured through the NemoClaw/OpenShell flow.
Isolation Available through operator-configured sandboxing; host tools otherwise remain a configuration concern. OpenShell enforces sandbox, network, process, filesystem, authentication, and inference policy.
Operational surface Local Gateway, CLI, dashboard, TUI, channels, tools, skills, and plugins. Host CLI plus OpenShell Gateway, blueprint, readiness checks, sandbox lifecycle, policy, and agent integration.
Best fit Individuals and teams that prioritize control, experimentation, and broad extensibility. Security-conscious operators that need repeatable, governed, always-on agent execution.
Main trade-off You must design and maintain the security boundary. You accept more policy, infrastructure, and lifecycle configuration.

Which one should you run?

Choose OpenClaw when control and experimentation matter most

  • You want to run the assistant on your own computer or server without adopting a hosted service.
  • You need to switch between local and hosted models or test providers quickly.
  • Your workflow depends on a broad mix of channels, plugins, skills, and custom tools.
  • You can enforce your own access controls, patching schedule, secret storage, and network restrictions.
  • The agent is used by a small, trusted group and does not need a formal policy boundary around every integration.

Choose NemoClaw when policy enforcement is the deciding requirement

  • The agent will stay online and process messages or tasks while nobody is watching it.
  • Security teams need explicit network, filesystem, process, gateway-authentication, and inference controls.
  • Provider credentials and MCP authorization values should remain outside the agent sandbox.
  • You need a repeatable blueprint, managed image or controlled custom image, readiness checks, and defined lifecycle operations.
  • The organization is willing to operate an OpenShell Gateway and review policy exceptions instead of relying on runtime settings alone.

Use NemoClaw if you want OpenClaw locally, but understand the boundary

Yes, the documented NemoClaw design is intended to run OpenClaw inside an OpenShell sandbox. “Locally” in this arrangement means the host and its OpenShell components are under your control; it does not mean that OpenClaw’s tools execute directly on the unrestricted host. The sandbox, approved integrations, and credential-injection boundaries determine what the agent can actually reach.

Common pitfalls and recovery steps

Assuming NemoClaw is a replacement application

If you expect a new assistant interface or an entirely different agent, you may misdiagnose normal behavior. NemoClaw governs the selected runtime. Check which agent was selected during onboarding, inspect the integration configuration, and confirm that OpenClaw’s own channels, tools, and provider settings are the components being operated inside the sandbox.

Exposing a direct OpenClaw Gateway too early

A reachable Gateway is not the same as an authenticated, least-privilege Gateway. Pair unknown senders, restrict network reachability, review host-tool permissions, and test with a low-privilege account before accepting remote traffic. If you cannot explain which process can reach each tool and file, do not make the Gateway internet-facing.

Over-permissive NemoClaw exceptions

OpenShell’s deny-by-default posture can be weakened by approving broad destinations, writable paths, or unnecessary MCP services. Start with the smallest policy that supports one workflow, verify the request path, and add exceptions individually. Remove temporary approvals after testing.

Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.

Provider or credential failures

For OpenClaw, check the provider configuration and local secret permissions first. For NemoClaw, verify that the provider is registered with the NemoClaw flow and that the request is crossing an approved injection boundary; placing a secret inside the sandbox is not a substitute for managed credential configuration.

Custom-image drift

A custom Dockerfile can solve dependency problems but creates an update obligation. Record the base image, agent version, plugins, and policy assumptions. Rebuild and rerun readiness checks after changes instead of treating a previously working sandbox as permanently valid.

What is known about price, speed, and reliability?

The available primary documentation does not provide a dated independent benchmark comparing OpenClaw directly with NemoClaw for speed, cost, incident rate, or productivity. Do not infer that the extra sandbox layers are faster or slower, or that one option has a particular monthly price. Your actual cost depends on the host, model provider, inference volume, storage, networking, and the time required to operate the chosen stack.

NVIDIA announced NemoClaw on March 16, 2026. That announcement describes a single-command stack that installs NVIDIA Nemotron models and the OpenShell runtime while adding privacy and security controls. It is an announcement and product description, not a comparative performance test.

Migration and coexistence

Moving from OpenClaw to NemoClaw

Inventory channels, skills, plugins, model providers, credentials, filesystem paths, and network destinations before onboarding. Recreate the agent in NemoClaw, register providers through its managed flow, then approve only the integrations the inventory proves necessary. Test one channel and one workflow before migrating an always-on schedule.

Keeping separate deployments

You can keep a direct OpenClaw installation for experimentation and a NemoClaw deployment for governed production work, provided they do not share unmanaged credentials or conflicting Gateway endpoints. Treat them as separate trust domains and label each channel clearly so a test agent cannot be mistaken for the policy-controlled one.

Bottom line

OpenClaw is the better default for a capable self-hosted assistant when you value operating-system reach, model choice, channels, and extensibility and are prepared to secure the host yourself. NemoClaw is the better choice when an always-on agent must run inside explicit, repeatable controls for network access, files, processes, authentication, inference, credentials, and lifecycle management. In 2026, the decision is therefore less about which assistant is smarter and more about whether you need a flexible runtime or a governed way to operate that runtime.
