Chinese Jurassic Bird Fossil Had Undersized Wings—and May Have Been a Runner

The Jurassic bird Yuezhuornis yangyuanensis had bird-like bones but dinosaurian teeth, tail and claw—and wings one-third shorter than its legs. Its anatomy suggests early birds included weak fliers and ground-running forms.

A nearly complete fossil from Fujian Province, China, reveals a bird that looked avian in its skull and pelvis but carried a long dinosaur-like tail, serrated teeth and a sickle-shaped toe claw. Named Yuezhuornis yangyuanensis, the crow-sized animal lived about 150 million years ago and had wings roughly one-third shorter than its legs. Those proportions suggest a weak-flying or mainly terrestrial animal, expanding the range of body plans possible near the origin of birds.

What the fossil shows

Yuezhuornis yangyuanensis was recovered from Jurassic rocks in southeastern China. Reuters’ 2026 report estimates its mass at about 1.8 pounds (800 grams), making it approximately crow-sized. The specimen is nearly complete, an unusually informative condition for a fossil from this early stage of bird evolution.

The animal had slender, bird-like cranial bones and a bird-like pelvis. Yet several features remained strongly dinosaurian:

  • a long, bony tail rather than the shortened tail characteristic of modern birds;
  • large, closely packed serrated teeth;
  • a flexible second toe ending in a sickle-shaped claw.

Teeth and the claw could have helped it seize prey on the ground. They do not prove a particular diet or hunting style, but they show that early bird relatives combined a wide range of anatomical features rather than following one uniform template.

Why its wings matter

The key measurement is the relationship between the wings and the legs. Yuezhuornis’ wings were about one-third shorter than its legs, according to the 2026 report. Researchers compared its limb proportions with 377 living bird species. The closest matches were ground-dwelling birds such as pheasants, whose bodies are adapted more for walking and running than for sustained aerial performance.

That comparison makes a terrestrial lifestyle plausible, but it remains an inference from anatomy. No fossil can show whether an individual animal ran, glided or flew. Min Wang of China’s Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology said the bird may have run most of the time and taken short bursts of flight when necessary. In that interpretation, it occupied an ecological role closer to a running bird than to a powerful flier.

How it differs from the usual picture of the first birds

Early discussions of bird origins often emphasize selection for flight: lighter bodies, increasingly specialized wings and anatomical changes that improved takeoff, maneuverability and perching. Archaeopteryx, which lived at roughly the same broad interval, is commonly used as a reference for that transition because it combined feathers and wings with teeth, a long tail and other reptile-like traits.

Yuezhuornis complicates that sequence. Its wings were proportionally reduced even though its body retained unmistakable bird-like features. Wang described the fossil as a challenge to the traditional view that the avian body plan evolved almost exclusively under the pressures of flight. The discovery suggests that some lineages near the base of birds experimented with bodies optimized for life on the ground, even while other lineages were becoming better fliers.

Runner, weak flier or descendant that returned to the ground?

Several explanations fit the anatomy:

A primarily terrestrial bird

The long legs, short wings and proportions resembling pheasants are consistent with an animal that walked or ran frequently and used flight only briefly. The teeth and toe claw could have aided predation or defense, although their exact function is uncertain.

A weak flier capable of short bursts

Undersized wings do not automatically mean total flightlessness. Yuezhuornis may have been able to launch for a short distance, escape a predator, cross an obstacle or reach a low perch without sustaining long aerial travel.

A lineage that reduced flight after evolving from flying ancestors

University of Edinburgh paleontologist Steve Brusatte, who was not involved in the study, noted that some early birds may have evolved from flying ancestors and later returned to a ground-based way of life. The fossil alone cannot distinguish that history from an independently terrestrial branch, but it keeps both possibilities open.

What it says about Archaeopteryx and early avian diversity

The safest conclusion is not that Yuezhuornis replaces Archaeopteryx as the model for bird origins. Instead, it shows that the early avian family tree contained more anatomical variation than a single “improving flight” storyline suggests. The two may have shared an earlier Jurassic ancestor, or Yuezhuornis may represent a separately diverged experiment close to the avian stem.

Its mixture of bird-like skull and pelvis with a long tail, teeth, claw and reduced wings also warns against judging an early bird by one trait. Feathers or a bird-like pelvis did not guarantee strong flight, just as a dinosaur-like tail did not exclude membership among close bird relatives.

Earlier Chinese fossils had already widened the flight story

This is not the first Chinese fossil to revise ideas about early flight. A 1992 Science paper by Paul Sereno and Chenggang reported 135-million-year-old skeletons of Sinornis santensis from Lower Cretaceous lake deposits. Those fossils combined primitive traits with more advanced flight and perching features. The authors concluded that modern-style flight and perching had evolved in small-bodied birds not long after Archaeopteryx.

Yuezhuornis adds the opposite kind of evidence: near the same broad evolutionary origin, some bird-line animals appear to have retained or developed body plans better suited to the ground than to sustained flight.

What remains unknown

  • Whether the animal could achieve powered flight, glide or only make brief assisted leaps.
  • How often it used its wings in daily life.
  • Whether its teeth and claw indicate active predation, scavenging or another function.
  • Its precise position relative to Archaeopteryx and other Jurassic bird-line fossils.
  • Whether reduced wings evolved directly in this lineage or followed an earlier flying ancestor.

Those uncertainties are normal for a single fossil, even a nearly complete one. The anatomical evidence is strong enough to establish an unusually short-winged early bird, while behavior and ancestry remain subjects for further fossils and analysis.
