Google has announced four anti-scam protections for Android: an opt-in Enhanced Protection mode in Google Messages, wider scam warnings in chat notifications, automatic privacy masking during screen sharing, and alerts when an app tries to turn on call forwarding in the background. The protections are rolling out in stages, and your phone’s model, Android version and manufacturer determine which ones you receive.
What the four Android protections do

Google announced the additions on October 14, 2026. Availability is staged rather than universal, so an Android phone can receive one protection before the others.

Enhanced Protection in Google Messages
How it works
Enhanced Protection is an opt-in setting in Google Messages. It combines secure cloud analysis with on-device safeguards to assess suspicious messages and links. When a link arrives from an unfamiliar number, Messages can warn you before you open it. Google also uses Gemini Nano to add malicious-link protection on supported devices.

The newer link protection is designed to catch brand-new domains that have not yet been catalogued. That matters because scam campaigns often register fresh web addresses and abandon them quickly, before traditional reputation lists can identify them. The feature still does not make an unknown link safe automatically: a warning is a reason to stop, verify the sender through another channel and avoid entering passwords or payment details.

Supported hardware
Google’s announcement identifies the newest link protection on Pixel 10 and newer phones, the Galaxy S26 series, the Galaxy Z8 foldable and other select devices. Google has not established that every Android 15 or newer phone supports this specific Gemini Nano capability. Check for the Enhanced Protection option in Google Messages and install available system and Messages updates.
Scam Detection expands to chat notifications
Android is expanding Scam Detection beyond the Messages conversation view so suspicious content can be flagged when it surfaces in a chat notification. This targets a common failure point: reading a notification preview and tapping a link or replying before opening the full conversation.

The global expansion is being delivered through HONOR, Infinix, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, TECNO, vivo and Xiaomi devices. The announcement does not establish an identical release date for every country or model, so the absence of a warning on one phone does not prove the feature is unavailable across the entire brand. Notification behavior can also depend on the messaging app and the phone’s software build.

On Android 15 or newer, Android can automatically hide sensitive fields while you share your screen through Chrome or Android System WebView. Login fields and payment screens are the named examples: someone watching the shared session should see those areas masked instead of seeing the characters you type or the payment information displayed.

This protection addresses accidental exposure rather than a malicious app that already has access to your account. Before sharing, close unrelated apps, confirm who is watching and stop sharing when the task is complete. If a site or app uses a different rendering component, the stated protection may not apply because the announcement specifically covers Chrome and Android System WebView.
Warnings when apps enable call forwarding
Android will warn you when an app tries to enable call forwarding in the background. Attackers can abuse forwarding to redirect calls carrying one-time passwords or account-recovery codes, allowing them to intercept verification calls without physically taking your phone.

Rollout starts in early December on Pixel phones and other select devices. The warning is intended to expose a change that should normally require your knowledge. If you did not request forwarding, cancel it, review the phone app’s call-forwarding settings and contact your carrier using its official support channel. Do not read a verification code to anyone who called or messaged you.
What you should do when the features arrive
- Install the latest Android system update and update Google Messages from the Play Store.
- Open Google Messages settings and look for the opt-in Enhanced Protection control.
- Keep notification previews enabled only when their privacy trade-off is acceptable; Scam Detection can warn in the preview, but no filter replaces careful checking.
- Confirm that the phone runs Android 15 or newer before relying on screen-share masking.
- When a call-forwarding warning appears unexpectedly, stop and investigate through your carrier rather than dismissing it.
What these protections do not prove
Google’s announcement describes additional detection and privacy controls, not a guarantee that scams will be blocked. No controlled effectiveness study or independent test result was published with the announcement. The protections can reduce exposure to suspicious links, notification scams, screen-share leaks and covert call forwarding, but criminals can still use phone calls, legitimate services and convincing social engineering.

An informal Android Authority reader poll of 120 voters found 46% were happy with Android’s scam protections, 41% said they could be better and 13% were unhappy. That poll is a snapshot of that site’s audience, not representative research and not a measurement of how many scams the features prevent.
