That permanently unlocks a separate backpack tab with 9 slots. After Update 1, the base backpack requires a Tier 1 Workbench, while Backpack Upgrade I requires Tier 2. Upgrade I raises the backpack to 18 slots, and Upgrade II is gated by restoring 100 Memories through the Forgotten Temple and Heart of Orbis progression.

How Hytale’s backpack progression works
The backpack in Hytale’s standard progression is not a wearable bag that occupies an equipment slot. It is a consumable unlocker recipe. Once activated, it adds a backpack tab to the inventory interface and remains available as part of that character’s progression.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse the backpack tab for items you need on an expedition but do not need every few seconds: spare tools, blocks, gathering materials and reserve supplies. Keep frequently used combat or building items in the main inventory and hotbar so they remain immediately accessible.
The initial backpack adds 9 slots. One cited progression guide counts 36 main-inventory stacks, excluding the hotbar, and 45 stacks after adding the first backpack. Those totals are version-specific guidance rather than a universal promise for every game mode or later patch.

Current backpack recipes after Update 1
Hytale Team’s Update 1 notes, published January 17, 2026, say that “The Backpack and its upgrades are now easier to obtain.” The patch moved the base recipe to a Tier 1 Workbench and the first upgrade to Tier 2. Older January guides that require Tier 3 or list more leather describe superseded progression.
| Progression step | Workbench or gate | Materials or requirement | Capacity reported in the progression |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base Backpack unlocker | Tier 1 Workbench | 8 Iron Ingots and 8 Medium Leather | 9 backpack slots |
| Backpack Upgrade I | Tier 2 Workbench | 40 Cindercloth Scraps, 8 Cobalt Ingots and 24 Heavy Leather | 18 backpack slots |
| Backpack Upgrade II | Forgotten Temple/Heart of Orbis progression, then the current Workbench instruction | Restore 100 Memories; an additional material list is not stated in the cited progression | Later capacity is version- or mode-dependent in the cited material |
Iron Ingots are made by smelting iron ore in a furnace. Medium Leather is processed from hides at a Tanning Rack. The first upgrade’s recipe uses processed materials from separate progression paths: Cindercloth Scraps, Cobalt Ingots and Heavy Leather.
Step-by-step: unlock the base backpack
1. Reach a Tier 1 Workbench
Open a Tier 1 Workbench and locate the Backpack recipe. If your recipe screen still demands Tier 3 for the backpack itself, check that the game has applied Update 1; that requirement belongs to older guides.
2. Gather the current materials
- 8 Iron Ingots: obtain iron ore, then smelt it in a furnace.
- 8 Medium Leather: process hides at a Tanning Rack.
The leather quantity is important: Update 1 reduced the listed base requirement to 8 Medium Leather. Earlier guides commonly show 16, which is no longer the current official value described by the patch notes.
3. Craft the Backpack unlocker
Craft the item at the Tier 1 Workbench. The result is an unlocker, not a permanent bag object that you leave in a storage chest.

4. Activate it from your hand
- Move the crafted Backpack unlocker to your active hotbar slot.
- Hold it in your character’s hand.
- Use the secondary interaction, normally the right-click action on mouse and keyboard.
- Open the inventory and confirm that a backpack tab is now visible.
Because the crafted item is consumed as an unlocker, crafting it alone does not add slots. The secondary-use action is the step that exposes the 9-slot backpack.
How to get Backpack Upgrade I
Use a Tier 2 Workbench
After Update 1, Backpack Upgrade I belongs at a Tier 2 Workbench. A Tier 3 requirement in an older guide is superseded for this upgrade.
Collect the three listed materials
| Material | Amount | Where the cited progression places it |
|---|---|---|
| Cindercloth Scraps | 40 | Required by the Upgrade I recipe |
| Cobalt Ingots | 8 | Required by the Upgrade I recipe |
| Heavy Leather | 24 | Required by the Upgrade I recipe |
Craft and apply the upgrade
With the materials in your inventory, craft Backpack Upgrade I at the Tier 2 Workbench and follow the item’s application prompt. The cited progression reports that this raises the backpack from 9 to 18 slots. If the recipe is unavailable, verify the Workbench tier first; the update changed this gate and the game’s current recipe screen should be treated as authoritative for the installed version.
How to get Backpack Upgrade II
Restore 100 Memories
Upgrade II is tied to the Forgotten Temple and Heart of Orbis progression rather than simply being another early Workbench recipe. Restore 100 Memories to satisfy the stated progression gate.
Follow the current Workbench instruction
Once the Memory requirement is met, use the current Workbench recipe or claim instruction shown by the game. The cited progression confirms the 100-Memory gate but does not provide a fixed additional material list, so do not rely on a guide that invents one or assumes the same recipe across versions.

Capacity beyond Upgrade I can therefore vary with the installed build or mode. Check the in-game recipe and the capacity value displayed in your inventory rather than applying a fixed total from an older article.
Using the backpack efficiently
Separate “reserve” items from “active” items
The backpack is a separate inventory tab, so it works best as a reserve layer rather than a second hotbar. Put spare tools, extra blocks, expedition materials and other slower-to-access items there. Keep the equipment needed during combat, construction or emergency repairs in the main inventory and hotbar.
Plan around the tab switch
Before leaving a base, move low-frequency items into the backpack and leave open slots in the main inventory for resources collected on the trip. If you fill both areas before returning, you will need to stop gathering or reorganize through the inventory interface.

The initial 9-slot figure is the clearest fixed value in the cited progression. The 36-main-stack and 45-total figures are editorial counts tied to a particular version and inventory layout. Later upgrades and game modes can change the practical total, so use the slot count shown by your current interface when planning storage.

Two old-guide errors are especially common:
- Base Backpack quantity: older instructions may list 16 Medium Leather; the post-Update 1 listing is 8.
- Upgrade I Workbench: older instructions may require Tier 3; the post-Update 1 listing places it at Tier 2.
These are not alternative recipes to choose between. They reflect different progression versions. If your game shows values that conflict with the current listing, read the recipe in the installed build and confirm that the Update 1 changes have been applied.

Troubleshooting backpack unlocks and upgrades
The backpack tab does not appear
- Make sure you crafted the Backpack unlocker, not merely gathered its ingredients.
- Place it in your active hand before using the secondary/right-click interaction.
- Reopen the inventory after activation and look for a separate backpack tab.
The recipe asks for the wrong Workbench tier
For the current progression, the base Backpack is Tier 1 and Upgrade I is Tier 2. A Tier 3 requirement indicates an older guide, an unupdated game build or a different recipe entry. Compare the displayed recipe with the Update 1 progression before spending materials.
You have the ingredients but cannot craft Upgrade II
Upgrade II requires 100 restored Memories through the Forgotten Temple/Heart of Orbis progression. Having ordinary crafting materials is not a substitute for that gate. Complete the Memory requirement, then check the Workbench’s current instruction for the next action.

Your slot total differs from an online guide
Inventory totals can be version- or mode-dependent, especially after later upgrades. Treat 9 initial backpack slots and the cited 18-slot Upgrade I result as progression values, but verify any broader total in your own inventory screen.
Built-in progression versus backpack mods
The built-in system is tied to Hytale’s own Workbench and world progression. A mod changes that experience and may require a compatible game build, a mod loader and separate installation support. Evaluate a mod on the points that matter to your save before installing it:
| Comparison point | Built-in Hytale backpack | Extended Backpacks mod listing |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 9 slots initially; Upgrade I is reported at 18 slots | Listing says it adds additional backpack inventory-slot upgrades; exact capacity is not stated here |
| Progression gate | Workbench tiers, materials and 100 restored Memories for Upgrade II | Separate mod configuration and upgrade rules; not stated in the listing summary |
| Version support | Part of the game’s Update 1 progression | CurseForge listing showed a latest update of September 14, 2026; check compatibility with your installed Hytale build |
| Installation | No separate installation | Requires the mod’s supported installation environment; exact requirements are not stated in the cited summary |
| Persistence and death behavior | Not separately stated in the cited progression | Not stated in the cited listing summary |
The CurseForge listing reported 113,818 downloads as of 2026, but download count is popularity information, not proof that a mod works with every current build or save. Read the listing’s compatibility and installation notes before adding it to an existing world.
Quick Recap
Practical checklist
