OpenAI Launches Dots, Always-On AI Agents for Work

OpenAI announced Dots as always-on agents in ChatGPT that can continue assigned work between conversations. Access and setup depend on plan, region, and desktop availability.

OpenAI announced Dots on September 29, 2026, describing them as always-on agents in ChatGPT that can keep working on an assigned goal between conversations. Access is rolling out by plan and region, and enterprise-style workspace access requires administrator enablement. Users choose connected apps and set what a Dot may do independently versus what needs approval.

What are OpenAI Dots?

A Dot is an ongoing agent in ChatGPT, rather than a conversation that only responds while you are actively prompting it. OpenAI says a Dot can take responsibility for a goal, keep making progress between chats, work through problems, decide what needs to happen next, and return results for your review. It can ask you to make decisions that require your judgment.

OpenAI describes each Dot as having its own cloud computer, using apps the user chooses to connect, and retaining context for ongoing work. These are OpenAI’s product descriptions; the available launch information does not independently establish how well Dots perform or show that they outperform other agents. TechCrunch independently reported the DevDay launch and described Dots as powered by GPT-6 Astra: TechCrunch’s September 29, 2026 launch report.

How does a Dot work with apps and permissions?

You assign a goal, connect the apps relevant to it, and define the scope of its authority. OpenAI’s feature page depicts workflows involving Google Calendar, Google Drive, GitHub, Slack, and Microsoft Teams. These are examples shown by OpenAI, not confirmation that every app feature or workflow is supported.

OpenAI says users manage permissions and decide when a Dot can act on its own and when it needs approval. That distinction matters for work with consequences: a Dot can make progress within the boundaries you set, while actions or decisions that need your judgment can be brought back to you. The product descriptions do not provide a comprehensive account of Dots’ security architecture.

Which plans include Dots?

As of OpenAI Help Center guidance checked on October 3, 2026, access depends on plan, supported region, and workspace settings:

Plan or workspace Access described by OpenAI
Pro Rolling out to users in supported markets, excluding the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
Business Premium Available in supported ChatGPT regions.
Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces Beta access is possible if a workspace administrator enables it; it is initially off by default.

Availability is gradual and may take several days to reach an eligible account. OpenAI says the first Dot is included in Pro or Business Premium at no extra cost. Plans also include an allowance for deeper work, and OpenAI says extended limits apply during the first month after launch; the Help Center does not state the allowance quantities. OpenAI has mentioned future options to add Dots and scale their output, but has not established those options’ current availability or pricing. See OpenAI’s current “Getting started with your dot” guidance for eligibility and setup details, which may change.

How do I set up my Dot?

  1. Open ChatGPT on desktop. Create a Dot in the ChatGPT desktop app or desktop web.
  2. Give it a goal. Describe the ongoing responsibility or outcome you want it to work toward.
  3. Connect relevant apps and set permissions. Choose which apps it may use, and specify what it can do independently versus what requires your approval.
  4. Review its progress and results. OpenAI describes Dots as bringing results back for review and asking for your judgment where needed.

OpenAI documents connecting messaging channels, including Slack or texting, from desktop. Its feature page gives examples of connected services and user-controlled permissions: OpenAI’s Dots feature page.

Can I use Dots on mobile?

OpenAI says users can talk to a created Dot in the mobile app when mobile access is available. Creating a Dot on mobile and using mobile web are not currently supported, according to its Help Center. For setup—and for connecting messaging channels—use the desktop app or desktop web.

How is a Dot different from a regular ChatGPT conversation?

A regular conversation is centered on the exchange happening in that chat. A Dot is presented as a persistent agent with an assigned goal: it can continue working between conversations, use selected connected apps, and return progress for review. Its autonomy is not unlimited; users set permissions and approval expectations. OpenAI’s descriptions establish the intended product model, not independently measured performance or a basis for ranking Dots against competing agents.
