OpenAI Dot is an always-on agent inside ChatGPT that can work on ongoing tasks using information and apps you choose to connect. Create it in ChatGPT on desktop, give it a bounded responsibility, and decide which actions it may take on its own and which require your approval. Dot is software—not a physical device—and it is distinct from the developer-focused Agents API.
What OpenAI Dot does—and what it is not
OpenAI describes Dot as an agent with its own cloud computer that can use connected apps, context, and memories to make progress between conversations. You can assign ongoing work, ask it to check for changes, and have it bring drafts or decisions back for review. OpenAI’s launch announcement gives examples such as investigating Slack issues and preparing project materials; these are product examples, not measured guarantees of accuracy or productivity. Dot is set up through ChatGPT. It is not the same as the OpenAI Agents API, which is a developer route for building an agent using a Platform API key and an OpenAI-hosted sandbox. Choose the API route only if your goal is to build your own agent rather than use Dot in ChatGPT.
Who can access Dot?
Eligibility and rollout depend on plan and location. The OpenAI Help Center currently lists ChatGPT Pro users outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK; Business Premium users across supported ChatGPT regions; and Enterprise users, including Edu and Healthcare, in a beta that a workspace administrator must enable. Access is rolling out gradually, so an eligible account may not see Dot for several days. The first Dot is included in Pro or Business Premium at no additional charge according to the Help Center. Check the current eligibility and account details before relying on availability or plan terms.

How do I set up my Dot?
Create Dot in the ChatGPT desktop app or ChatGPT on desktop web and complete onboarding. The desktop app is also available for Windows. You can later talk to an existing Dot in the ChatGPT mobile app when mobile access is available, but Dot cannot currently be created on mobile and is not supported on mobile web. Connecting messaging channels such as Slack or texting is also done on desktop.
- Open the ChatGPT desktop app or desktop web and start Dot onboarding.
- Describe the ongoing responsibility you want it to handle. Include relevant context, and attach files or photos if they help explain the work.
- Connect only the apps and sources needed for that responsibility, reviewing each app’s permissions first.
- Set boundaries for what Dot may prepare or change, when it must ask you, and what it should report back.
- Inspect Dot’s In progress, Scheduled, and Completed activity in its profile. Open its computer if you want to view or interact with its work.
How do I give Dot a task that is useful and bounded?
Start with monitoring, research, or draft preparation rather than unrestricted authority to act. For example, ask Dot to review your calendar each morning and report upcoming commitments, or check an approved source on a schedule and bring changes to your attention. A useful task description covers the outcome, allowed sources, cadence, permitted work, approval points, and reporting format.

- Outcome: State what you want to know or have prepared.
- Sources: Name the connected apps or files Dot may use.
- Cadence: Specify whether it is a one-time task, reminder, or recurring check.
- Scope: Say what Dot may draft or change, and what it must not do.
- Approval: Identify actions that require your go-ahead or should be handed off.
- Report: Ask for a concise update that includes unresolved items.
For example: “Each weekday morning, review my connected calendar and the project folder I specify. List today’s commitments and flag schedule changes. Do not send messages or alter events; bring proposed changes to me for approval. Report anything you could not verify.” This is a prompt pattern, not a product guarantee.

Ask Dot for a reminder or recurring check as part of a task. Manage the schedule, time, and notifications under Scheduled activity. Scheduled runs and proactive updates appear in the conversation. Dot can review connected information and form memories even when you have not sent a new prompt; you can inspect and pause its scheduled work rather than treating background activity as an unattended guarantee.

Which apps and computers can Dot use?
Connected apps
Apps give Dot access to information for its tasks. OpenAI said its plugin ecosystem connects to over 4,000 apps in its September 29, 2026 announcement, but the Help Center cautions that available apps can differ. The figure does not mean every app is enabled for every account. Review permissions before connecting an app and connect only what the task needs.
Dot’s cloud computer and your local computer
Dot has its own cloud computer. Access to your local computer is optional and starts turned off. To enable it, use the ChatGPT desktop app and confirm “Allow access.” That permission lets Dot access files and work on the computer from messaging channels; you can revoke access. With local access enabled, Dot can create Work or Codex tasks, use local skills, and use a local browser when its cloud browser is blocked. It can also create Codex cloud tasks if you have first created the environment in Codex.

Slack, email, and texting
The Help Center says you can connect Slack and personal email for Dot’s tasks, but Dot cannot have its own standalone email address at launch. Texting is a limited beta through a third-party provider for some US Pro users; it is unavailable in Business or Enterprise workspaces, and message and data rates may apply. Channel availability may change, so check the Help Center for current options.

How do I control what Dot can do?
Set rules that distinguish routine actions from consequential ones. Dot supports actions it can take without asking, actions it may take when pre-approved, actions that require approval, and work it should hand off. OpenAI says some actions that affect accounts or share information receive additional review, and some require approval. Set your own approval boundary explicitly; do not assume that a general instruction grants safe or appropriate authority.

OpenAI’s Help Center warns: “Your dot can make mistakes, including when following your rules.” Inspect its work and verify important details before relying on them, especially before an action affects an account or shares information.
What happens to connected information and memories?
Disconnecting an app does not delete information Dot has already obtained. The Help Center says deleting Dot is needed to delete its saved memories; resetting Dot deletes its conversations, saved memories, and scheduled tasks. Review the deletion notice before confirming a reset so you understand what will be removed.
