In robotics, the term most clearly describes a learned policy trained on demonstrations from multiple tasks—and sometimes multiple kinds of robots. “Large” refers to the breadth of behaviors represented, not a defined number of model parameters.
What makes it a large behavior model?
In robotics, an LBM aims to learn a reusable policy rather than a policy built for just one task. Researchers can collect demonstrations by teleoperating robots, then train a neural network to reproduce the demonstrated input-output behavior. The inputs may include camera images, a natural-language task description and the robot’s proprioception—information about its own state. The outputs are commands sent through the robot’s control interface.

The word “large” does not identify a standard model size, data volume or architecture. In this usage, it points to the range of tasks and behaviors included in training. The IEEE Robotics and Automation Society interview with researcher Scott Kuindersma describes the approach as imitation learning: “We collect many teleoperation demonstrations and train a neural network to reproduce the input-output behaviors in the data.”

The goal is transfer: a policy trained on varied tasks, and potentially different robot embodiments, may use what it learned to handle a task it has not seen in exactly the same form. That is an aim to test, not a guaranteed capability. Kuindersma cautions that evidence for this kind of generalization is still early. A demonstration alone does not establish repeatable performance across real-world tasks or robots.

Does the term mean the same thing outside robotics?
No shared architecture or settled taxonomy is established across the sources. A 2026 retail-customer preprint uses “large behavior model” for a model that learns customer decisions from transaction histories. Lirio uses the term for a healthcare behavior model intended to support personalized engagement. These are distinct applications of a broad label, not evidence that robotics, retail and healthcare LBMs work the same way.
Lirio’s 2024 white paper reports figures including “4x” engagement with healthcare messages, 60% of patients with diabetes completing overdue appointments, more than 600,000 people vaccinated against respiratory illness, and 96.3% of people eligible for three or more recommended actions engaging. These are company-reported figures; the document does not establish them as independent evaluations or generalizable causal estimates.

How to assess a claim about an LBM
Because the label covers different domains, a useful description should make clear what behavior the model handles and what evidence supports its capabilities. Check:
- Domain and output: Does it produce robot commands, predict customer decisions or support health engagement?
- Training breadth: What tasks, behavioral records and—where relevant—robot embodiments or populations were represented?
- Adaptation: How does the model handle a new task, robot or user, and was that behavior tested?
- Evaluation: Is the evidence a demonstration, a repeatable real-world assessment or a measured transfer to new conditions?
The cited sources do not establish a single cross-domain benchmark, universal parameter threshold or field-wide performance statistic. The retail work is a preprint, and the robotics evidence described in the interview is still developing.
