Copilot’s official plans list prices and monthly AI credits; Cursor’s pricing page describes plans, agent usage and privacy options. Neither source establishes a universal performance winner, so the better choice depends on your workflow, budget and need for agent features.
Which alternative fits your coding workflow?
These are different ways to organize AI-assisted coding, not interchangeable versions of the same app. Decide first whether you want assistance inside tools you already use or are willing to move into a dedicated AI editor.

GitHub Copilot: stay with GitHub and your IDE
GitHub presents Copilot as a service spanning GitHub, IDEs and the command line. That makes it a natural candidate if you want AI assistance alongside an existing development workflow rather than adopting a separate editor. Its product page also describes agent workflows, including cloud agents and delegation to third-party agents such as Claude and Codex. Feature access and usage depend on plan and availability; consult the Copilot product page and current plans for terms.
Cursor: move into an AI-first editor
Cursor is positioned as a separate AI coding editor. Its official pricing page describes plans and includes information about agent usage, privacy and team options. Consider it if you want an editor organized around AI-assisted work and are comfortable evaluating a different development environment. The page does not, by itself, establish a directly comparable feature set or performance advantage over Copilot.

How Copilot’s listed prices and credits work
GitHub’s plans page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists these individual plan prices in USD. Treat them as the prices shown on that page at that time; check the live page for current terms and availability.
| Plan | Listed price | Monthly AI credits described by GitHub |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 per month | Not stated for Free on the cited plans information. |
| Pro | $10 per user per month | $15 per month |
| Pro+ | $39 per user per month | $70 per month |
| Max | $100 per user per month | $200 per month |
These figures are from GitHub’s Copilot plans page, accessed October 4, 2026. GitHub says agent mode, code review, cloud agent, CLI and chat usage consume AI credits, with consumption varying by model. A plan price therefore does not mean unlimited agent work. Compare the credit allowance with the kinds of tasks and models you expect to use, and verify the current plan details before subscribing.
Choose by the work you need the assistant to do
- Keep your existing tools: Copilot is the option here whose official positioning explicitly spans GitHub, IDEs and CLI.
- Adopt a dedicated AI editor: Cursor’s official page presents it as an AI coding editor and outlines agent, privacy and team plan considerations.
- Delegate multi-step work: Copilot’s product information describes cloud agents and delegation to third-party agents, but check your plan and feature access before making that capability central to your decision.
- Control recurring costs: Compare Copilot’s stated credit model with your expected use, and inspect Cursor’s current plan terms directly. The available information does not support a like-for-like cost calculation for the two tools.
What this comparison does—and does not—establish
The official pages support a workflow and plan comparison, not a coding-quality ranking. They do not establish that Copilot or Cursor produces better code, completes tasks faster, or is best for every developer. No comparable task testing is available here. Claude Code, Windsurf, Gemini CLI and other assistants may also suit particular workflows, but current feature and pricing details for them are not established by the sources cited here; compare their own current documentation before treating them as equivalent options.
