Flo set out to make a QR code for a birthday present. The quick task became a frustrating search through account prompts, export restrictions and subscriptions for dynamic codes—and the reason Flo says they built QRcodly, an open-source QR code generator.
Why a birthday present led to QRcodly
In a first-person DEV Community article published July 17, 2026, Flo describes wanting a QR code that would reveal a surprise when scanned. Flo writes, “Last year, all I wanted was a QR code for a birthday present.” The gift was completed, but finding a suitable generator raised a bigger question: why should a simple code involve account barriers, restricted or watermarked exports, or a subscription for a destination that can be changed?

Those are Flo’s experiences and critique, not an independent survey of QR-code services. The practical distinction behind the frustration is what happens after a code is printed: does the image itself contain the destination, or does it point through a redirect service?
Static and dynamic QR codes work differently
Static codes contain the destination
Flo summarizes a static code this way: “A static QR code is just data encoded into pixels.” Its image holds the URL or other content. If the destination changes, the printed code does not change with it; the new destination generally requires a newly generated and printed code.

Dynamic codes use a redirect
In Flo’s description, a dynamic QR code contains a short URL. When someone scans it, the service routes that short URL to a destination. Flo calls it “A dynamic QR code is a 302 redirect.” The redirect gives the code owner a way to change the destination without replacing the printed image, provided the redirect service and its access remain available.
That arrangement creates a physical dependency. The short URL is ink on the flyer, menu, package or gift; the target is controlled elsewhere. If a provider disables the redirect or access expires, the printed code may no longer lead where intended. Flo describes the switching cost as “isn’t technical, it’s physical: ink on paper.” This explains the mechanism, but does not establish that every provider imposes the same terms.

What Flo says QRcodly offers
Flo presents QRcodly as a free, open-source QR code generator and management platform released under the MIT license. In the article’s account, its free tier includes static and dynamic codes, unlimited scans, styling and logo uploads, scan analytics, and a built-in URL shortener, without a credit card requirement or an expiry trick. The article describes paid Pro features for businesses, including custom domains for short links, REST API access, bulk imports and third-party integrations.

What open source changes for a printed code
Flo’s case for the MIT license is that it gives users an exit option: they can fork and self-host the project if its operator changes direction. That is different from a hosted redirect whose continued operation depends entirely on the provider. A fork does not, by itself, remove the work or ongoing costs involved in operating a service, maintaining infrastructure, or preserving a domain and its redirects.
Flo acknowledges that servers, analytics and support cost money, and frames QRcodly’s business model as charging for business-oriented capabilities rather than making individuals pay to keep a redirect alive. As Flo puts it, “Companies pay for company features. Individuals don’t pay ransom for a redirect.” That is the founder’s aim, not a guarantee of future availability or a substitute for checking the service’s terms.

The architecture behind the project
Flo says QRcodly is built in TypeScript across a pnpm monorepo, with a shared package of Zod schemas for QR content types. The same schemas are used for frontend form validation and backend request validation. The article lists supported payload types as URL, text, Wi-Fi, vCard, email, location, event and EPC payment data.
The project’s backend is described as a separate Fastify REST API. Flo says that separation supports server-side QR rendering, scheduled work and reactions to events such as a user deletion or subscription status change. For dynamic codes, the article describes a short-link route, /u/:shortCode, that records a scan and responds with a 302 redirect.

Other technologies named by Flo include Drizzle ORM with MySQL, Redis, Clerk, S3-compatible logo storage and next-intl. Flo says TypeScript was chosen with a web app, browser extension and future desktop app in mind. These are implementation choices as described by the author; the article is not an independent inspection of the codebase.
What the story does—and does not—establish
The article makes a personal case for building another free QR code generator: a birthday project exposed the difference between a code that embeds content and one that depends on an editable redirect, and Flo wanted an alternative with an open-source exit path. It does not provide a neutral comparison of named competitors, independently establish current QRcodly pricing or availability, or verify claims about the wider market.
There is also an inconsistency in the article’s language-count claims: one part says nine languages and another says eight. Neither should be treated as a verified current count. Flo mentions first paying customers and being “a year in,” but the article does not establish a precise launch date from that wording.
