A Mac assistant can keep model inference on the computer, but “100% on-device” is only accurate if you define which parts of the system stay local. Model responses, file retrieval, speech features, updates, telemetry and tool calls may follow different data paths. The exact cost depends on the Mac and software you choose; without a specified build and spending record, there is no defensible personal total to report.
What “100% on-device” means for an assistant
It is an implementation boundary, not a guarantee implied by a product label. Inference is the process of using a model to generate an answer, but an assistant may also retrieve files, recognize or synthesize speech, contact external tools, send telemetry, or download updates. Each function needs its own answer to the question: does it run locally, or does it make a network request?

A useful description names the components and their behavior. For example, a system might run its language model and file search locally while requiring an internet connection for updates or a particular external tool. That is more informative than calling the entire assistant local without qualification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Model inference: Does the Mac generate responses, or is a prompt sent to a remote model?
- Retrieval: Are files indexed and searched on the Mac, and where is the index stored?
- Speech: Do transcription and speech generation work locally, or rely on network services?
- Tools: Can a tool read local files or run a command without a remote service? Does it call an API?
- Network activity: Do telemetry, account checks, model downloads or updates transmit information or require connectivity?
Offline behavior is a useful check, but not a complete privacy audit: a feature that is inactive without a network may still send data when connectivity returns. To make a “no cloud use” claim, check the application’s network-dependent features and be clear about what was verified.

How a local Mac assistant is put together
One documented architecture has three layers: a model runtime, a model server or API, and an agent layer. Apple’s WWDC 2026 session on local agentic AI describes a stack involving MLX, MLX-LM for model loading and quantization, an MLX-LM server, and an agent. This is an available approach, not evidence that every local assistant—or any particular personal build—uses those components.
Model runtime
The runtime loads the model and performs inference. Apple describes MLX as an open-source array framework for experimenting with, training and fine-tuning generative models on Apple silicon. MLX-LM is part of the stack described in Apple’s session for loading models and applying quantization. Quantization reduces the numerical precision used to represent model weights; the chosen model and quantization affect storage and memory needs, and results depend on the workload.
Model server or API
A server layer exposes model functions to the rest of the application. It can provide a consistent interface between the runtime and the assistant, but the word “server” does not by itself mean a cloud server: in the WWDC architecture, the described agent loop runs locally.

Agent and tools
The agent decides whether to answer directly or use a tool, passes the tool request to the local system, then considers the result. Apple Developer describes a loop in which “the model decides what to do, calls tools to run commands, read files, and hit APIs, observes the results, and iterates — all running locally for privacy and offline availability.” That description applies to the session’s architecture; an API call in another implementation could contact an external service, so tool destinations still need to be checked.
Why choose local inference
Keeping inference on a Mac can reduce the need to send prompts to a remote model and can make model responses available without an internet connection. Whether those benefits extend to file search, speech, or tools depends on how each component is implemented. Local execution also brings the model’s memory and compute requirements onto the device, rather than making those requirements invisible behind a remote service.
Apple’s own Apple Intelligence is not synonymous with an entirely local assistant. Apple’s June 2026 announcement and its Private Cloud Compute Security Guide describe an approach that combines on-device processing with Private Cloud Compute for requests that need more capability. That is a distinct privacy architecture, not a promise that every request is handled offline on the user’s Mac.

What determines whether it will work well on your Mac
There is no single hardware specification that predicts the experience. The model, its architecture, quantization, available memory, context size and the task all matter. A short prompt and a long conversation can impose different demands; one model’s performance does not establish how another will behave.
Apple’s 2025 technical report describes an approximately 3-billion-parameter on-device foundation model alongside a separate server model. That is useful context about Apple’s design, not a universal maximum for third-party models that can run on a Mac. Likewise, Apple Machine Learning Research reported that cache sharing reduced KV-cache memory usage by 37.5% in the specific model design it described. That figure is not a general reduction for local assistants and does not mean inference is 37.5% faster.
An independent Mac Studio test published by Tom’s Hardware on July 30, 2026, found that architecture and workload affected inference results and cautioned that memory bandwidth alone did not predict delivered performance. Its measurements apply to its tested hardware and models, not automatically to a different Mac or assistant.

Evaluate your own tasks, not just a model label
For a meaningful assessment, record the exact Mac configuration, model and version, quantization, context length and task. Try representative work: a short factual query, a longer document, file retrieval, or a tool action if those are part of your intended use. Note response latency and whether the result is useful. Without measurements on the intended setup, claims about speed or quality are expectations, not test findings.

A personal total cannot be established without the builder’s configuration and spending record. The relevant number is not simply the price of a Mac: separate what was already owned from new spending attributable to the project, and distinguish one-time purchases from recurring costs. Do not treat the use of local inference as proof that a build was free.
| Cost area | What to count |
|---|---|
| Mac | Whether the computer was already owned or bought for the project; if purchased for it, record the exact configuration, purchase date and price. |
| Model storage | Model downloads and any additional storage needed, including an external drive or accessories. Record model names, versions, quantization and download sizes. |
| Software and services | Paid applications, subscriptions, hosted services or external APIs used by any feature. A local model does not establish that every part of the assistant is free or local. |
| Operating costs | Electricity or other running costs only if actually measured, with the measurement method and period stated. |
| Ongoing maintenance | Recurring fees, if any, and the time needed to manage models, updates and local components. Do not turn an unmeasured time cost into a monetary figure. |
Without receipts, measured usage or another documented basis, a precise dollar total would be invented. A useful cost account says what was newly purchased, what was already on hand, what recurs, and what remains unmeasured.

How to describe a local build accurately
A credible account of a particular assistant should identify the Mac’s chip, memory and storage; the models and versions; quantization and model sizes; runtime and agent components; and any external drives or paid services. It should then state which functions work offline and which need the network. If reporting performance, give task examples and measured latency alongside the model and machine configuration.
Apple’s materials establish that local inference and local agent architectures are supported options, not that a specific assistant has been built, tested, or made cost-free. A first-person account should supply its own setup and spending figures before making those claims.
