Yes—a desktop vinyl cutting machine can often draw or write as well as cut, but only when that model supports a compatible pen or tool and its software workflow. For a DIY setup, check the machine’s material support, work area, mat requirements, drawing tools, and included accessories against the projects you plan to make.
How one machine cuts vinyl and draws
A craft cutter moves a blade or compatible pen across material according to a design. With a blade, it can cut shapes from supported vinyl; with a pen or drawing tool, it can trace lines, write text, or add details. These are model-specific functions, not a guarantee that every vinyl cutter accepts pens or uses them in the same way.

For example, Cricut identifies writing and drawing among the Maker 4’s functions and lists a fine-point pen among the included items on its product page. Brother describes the ScanNCut DX SDX225 as supporting cutting and drawing. Check the exact model and compatible tools before purchasing: Cricut Maker 4 and Brother ScanNCut DX SDX225.
What to check before choosing a DIY cutter
Materials and thickness
Match the machine to the materials you expect to use, such as adhesive vinyl for decals, iron-on material for apparel, or cardstock for cards. Supported materials and thickness limits vary by model. Cricut says the Maker 4 works with 300+ materials, including vinyl, iron-on, and cardstock; that is a manufacturer claim for this model, not a category-wide specification. Brother describes automatic material-thickness detection on the SDX225. For any model, confirm its supported material list and thickness guidance before attempting a project.

Work area, mats, and material loading
Check the maximum usable width and length, and whether your usual materials need a cutting mat. Cricut’s Maker 4 page lists a maximum Smart Materials cut size of 11.7 in x 12 ft. That figure applies to its stated Smart Materials workflow, not every roll or material. Cricut’s machine comparison gives model-specific work sizes and matless material lengths: Cricut machine comparison.
Matless loading can be convenient for longer projects, but it depends on both the machine and compatible material. Cricut’s Explore 5 guide identifies Smart Vinyl, Smart Iron-On, and Smart Paper Sticker Cardstock as matless material types, and says other brands’ materials can be used with a cutting mat. See the Explore 5 Quick Start Guide for its specific workflow.

Pen support and included tools
Confirm which pens, pen holders, blades, and other tools work with the model, and whether they are included or sold separately. A pen-based drawing function does not mean that any pen will fit or that every machine’s software offers the same drawing controls. Cricut’s Maker 4 product page describes its supported functions and bundle contents; the Explore 5 product page describes its projects and tool compatibility. Compare the exact bundle offered in your region, since package contents can differ.

Design software and device workflow
Before buying, verify how designs are created and sent to the specific machine, which devices and operating systems it supports, and whether the workflow suits your setup. These details can vary by model and software version. The product information cited here does not establish universal computer-free operation, offline use, or software pricing, so check the manufacturer’s current model-specific documentation for those details.

Choose based on the projects you want to make
- Vinyl decals: Look for support for adhesive vinyl, a work area that fits your design, and a compatible mat or matless loading option. A drawing pen is useful for adding handwritten details, but it is separate from the blade-cutting task.
- Apparel and iron-on designs: Confirm iron-on material support and the size of the usable cutting area for your design. Don’t assume a matless material option applies to every brand or type of iron-on.
- Cards and drawn lettering: Verify pen compatibility and the software’s drawing or writing workflow, along with cardstock support if you will cut card shapes too.
- Thicker craft materials: Check the model’s material and thickness limits, plus whether a special blade or tool is required. Cricut says the Explore 5 can use a separately sold Deep Cutting Tool for thicker materials such as foam and rubber sheets; this is specific to that machine and tool.
Sticker projects have an extra scanning constraint
Print-then-cut workflows rely on a sensor reading printed markings, so material appearance can affect scanning. Cricut says reflective, glossy, or darker materials can interfere with its sensor markings. It identifies certain Cricut printable vinyl and sticker products as compatible, while warning that dark, high-gloss, or holographic third-party materials may reduce scan accuracy. This guidance applies to Cricut’s workflow; do not assume the same limits or compatibility rules for other brands. Consult Cricut’s Print Then Cut instructions.

Use official model pages to compare capabilities rather than treating any one machine’s claims as universal. Cricut’s Maker 4 documentation provides specific material, function, and Smart Materials size claims; the Explore 5 documentation describes its own tools and matless materials. Brother’s SDX225 page describes cutting, drawing, and automatic material-thickness detection. Silhouette’s machine category page describes cutting materials including vinyl, cardstock, and fabric, and says most machines have double-carriage or matless cutting features, but those broad statements are not enough to establish exact specifications for a particular model. Check the page for the exact machine you are considering: Silhouette machine category.

For a practical comparison, write down your typical material, largest design, whether you need matless loading, whether you need pen drawing, and which tools are included. Then verify each item on the manufacturer’s page and in the setup guide for the exact model and regional bundle. This avoids choosing on a broad feature label such as “draws” or “cuts 300+ materials” without confirming that the specific tool and material fit your project.
