Open-Source Alternatives to Happo for Website Screenshot Testing

Playwright is the clearest fit for teams already using its test runner; BackstopJS merits verification for self-hosting, while Chromatic is a Storybook-oriented hosted comparator, not an established open-source replacement.

If your team already uses Playwright, start with Playwright Test’s built-in screenshot assertions: they keep screenshot baselines in the test workflow and repository. BackstopJS is another candidate for a self-hosted setup, but verify its current license, maintenance, and browser requirements before adopting it. For Storybook teams, Chromatic is a useful hosted workflow to compare—not an established open-source replacement. The right choice depends on your test framework, hosting preference, and ability to keep captures deterministic.

What Happo does—and what an alternative needs to replace

Happo describes itself as a visual-regression and accessibility-testing service. Its site says it integrates with Storybook, Cypress, Playwright, and custom integrations, and lists Chrome, Firefox, Safari, iOS Safari, and Edge for web component screenshots. These are Happo’s own product descriptions, not independent test results: Happo.

Visual regression testing captures a rendered interface and compares it with an approved baseline. It can reveal unintended appearance changes that functional assertions do not catch, but it does not replace functional or accessibility tests. When evaluating an alternative, check where captures run, how baselines are stored and approved, how dynamic content is controlled, and who maintains the browser environment.

Happo’s public repository says the old happo.io package was merged into the happo package. If migrating an existing integration, use the current Happo documentation rather than copying an install instruction for the old package name: Happo on GitHub.

Which alternatives are worth considering?

BackstopJS Teams investigating a standalone, self-hosted visual-regression approach. A recent Argos-authored comparison names it as a free, self-hosted alternative. That vendor comparison is not enough to establish its present license, maintenance, browser dependencies, or integrations; check the project’s current first-party documentation before committing. For Playwright suites: use its screenshot assertions

Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() captures a screenshot and compares it with a reference. On its first execution, it creates a baseline; subsequent runs compare against that reference. Playwright waits for consecutive screenshots to match before saving a baseline, which helps avoid recording a frame while rendering is still changing. Baselines are associated with browser and platform/project names, and --update-snapshots updates them when intended changes need approval.

A minimal test looks like this:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('homepage visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png');
});

Run it with your project’s normal Playwright test command. The first run creates the reference; inspect and commit that image with the test code. Later runs compare new output to the committed reference. After a deliberate visual change, review the diff and update the baseline with npx playwright test --update-snapshots, then commit the approved baseline change.

Playwright supports pixel-difference controls such as maxDiffPixels, and a custom stylesheet can hide volatile elements. Use these controls narrowly: a tolerance can reduce irrelevant noise, but an overly permissive threshold can conceal a real regression. The documentation covers assertion options and screenshot behavior: Playwright visual comparisons.

For a self-hosted standalone tool: investigate BackstopJS carefully

BackstopJS is a lead for teams who want a separate self-hosted visual-regression system rather than adding assertions to an existing Playwright suite. The available comparison names it as free and self-hosted, but does not settle current maintenance, licensing, browser dependencies, or integration support. Verify each of those in the project’s own current documentation and repository before selecting it. Do not assume that a third-party comparison’s description establishes present-day project terms.

For Storybook workflows: compare Chromatic, but keep the category clear

Chromatic’s documentation describes cloud capture for stories and test archives, baseline diffs, and metadata tied to commits and branches. It captures after determining that the UI has rendered. CSS animations, transitions, videos, and GIFs are paused; JavaScript-driven animations need to be paused by the team to avoid false-positive diffs. This is relevant workflow context for Storybook users, but the sources here do not establish Chromatic as open-source software.

How to choose without being misled by “open source” labels

  • Start with your existing framework. A Playwright suite can use its own assertions. A Storybook-centered team may value story-based capture and review. Avoid adding a second runner unless it solves a concrete workflow gap.
  • Decide who owns the capture environment. Repository-managed baselines and a self-hosted runner offer infrastructure control but leave browser setup and upkeep to your team. A hosted capture service supplies cloud review infrastructure and makes you dependent on that service.
  • Make the rendering environment repeatable. Browser version, operating system, settings, hardware, power state, and headless mode can affect pixels. Keep baseline generation and comparison runs on consistent environments.
  • Plan for unstable UI. Timestamps, rotating content, network-dependent elements, and animation can create diffs unrelated to a code change. Control or hide only the volatile regions that are not under test.
  • Define baseline approval. Decide who reviews diffs, how approved image updates enter version control, and how pull requests expose changes. A tool that captures screenshots is not automatically a complete review process.
  • Verify project health and terms directly. Before adopting a purported open-source option, check the current license, repository activity, release cadence, supported browsers, and self-hosting instructions in its own sources. The available evidence does not support a neutral performance ranking of these candidates.

Make screenshot comparisons reproducible

Keep the machine and browser consistent

Playwright specifically warns that rendering can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in the same CI image or otherwise pinned environment. If a browser or operating-system upgrade changes rendering, treat it as a baseline migration: review resulting diffs rather than accepting every change automatically.

Control motion and time-dependent states

Disable or freeze animations when the exact animation frame is not part of the test. Remove or stabilize dates, randomized data, rotating promotions, and user-specific content. For Chromatic, CSS animations and transitions, videos, and GIFs are paused during capture, while JavaScript-driven animation must be paused by the team. For any runner, make the desired UI state explicit before capturing it.

Use thresholds and hiding rules sparingly

Playwright’s maxDiffPixels and custom screenshot stylesheet can help when small rendering differences or known volatile elements are not meaningful. Prefer fixing the source of instability first; broad hiding rules and generous thresholds make a test less able to detect unintended changes.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot file rather than a repository baseline comparison, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. One GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. This is a capture service, not a replacement for Playwright’s baseline assertions.

cURL example, as documented at ScreenshotNeo’s API documentation:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

Cookie banners and consent interfaces, supported newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies page verdict and billing status in headers. The MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Common selection and setup problems

Every CI run shows visual diffs

First check whether baseline generation and comparison use the same operating system, browser version, settings, and headless mode. Then look for changing content and motion. Do not raise the mismatch threshold until you know which differences are harmless.

A screenshot assertion fails on first use

The first execution creates a reference rather than silently approving a visual standard. Review the generated image, confirm that it represents the intended state, and commit it. If the test is meant to change appearance, use npx playwright test --update-snapshots only after reviewing the new output.

Baseline updates hide a real regression

Do not update every snapshot simply to make CI green. Inspect the changed images and approve only expected changes; keep the baseline update in the same review process as the code change that caused it.

A tool is called open source, but the terms are unclear

For BackstopJS and Argos, the available comparison is vendor-authored and does not establish current license terms or self-hosting scope. Verify the exact license and deployment model in first-party project documentation before relying on them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can screenshot testing replace functional browser tests?

No. It checks rendered appearance against a baseline; it does not establish that interactions or application logic work.

Is Chromatic an open-source alternative to Happo?

The cited Chromatic documentation describes a cloud visual-testing workflow, but the available sources do not establish it as open-source software.

Is there a neutral benchmark proving one option is fastest or most accurate?

No independent benchmark is established in the available sources, so choose by workflow and validate performance in your own environment.
