Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAn open port on a home router may be found very quickly—potentially within minutes or less—but no study can predict exactly when a particular router will be discovered. Large-scale scanners can probe enormous parts of the internet, and public services may attract attention soon after they become reachable. Discovery is not the same as compromise: an attacker still needs a vulnerable or misconfigured service, weak credentials, or another way in.
How quickly can someone find an open router port?
Assume that an unnecessary service exposed to the public internet can be found. In a Yahoo Tech article matching this topic, the publication reported that researchers had observed first attack attempts on newly internet-facing services in less than a minute. It also reported that ZMap scanned the public IPv4 address space for a single port in under 45 minutes. Those are reported examples of scanning speed, not a countdown for every home router; the article’s underlying experiment and conditions were not independently verified.

A 2014 peer-reviewed study by researchers at the University of California, San Diego and the University of Michigan documented how quickly large-scale scanning can follow vulnerability disclosures. In one historical case, researchers observed scanning related to the Linksys backdoor after its December 2013 disclosure. Shodan began scanning within 48 hours, followed by other scans. The backdoor affected common Cisco, Linksys, and Netgear home and small-business routers and used TCP/32764. This is evidence of rapid scanning activity in that period, not a current measurement of how quickly all home routers are found.

The same study analyzed “10.8 million scans from 1.76 million hosts during January 2014.” It reported rates as high as 1.02 million packets per second for ZMap and 2.2 million packets per second for Masscan in the scans it examined, while noting that many scans ran much more slowly. These historical measurements describe scanner activity in the study’s dataset—not the normal rate of an attack on an individual household.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
What does an open port actually mean?
A port is a communication endpoint used by a service, such as remote administration or a game server. If a port responds from the public internet, that indicates a service is reachable; it does not prove that anyone has accessed the router or a device behind it. The actual risk depends on what service is listening, whether it is vulnerable or misconfigured, whether it is patched, and how access is controlled.
An open port can be intentional. A router’s port-forwarding rule may direct incoming traffic to a computer, camera, game console, or other device. Remote administration or a server feature can also create exposure. A port you do not recognize is a reason to identify the associated service and rule, not evidence by itself that the router has been hacked.

How to check and reduce exposure
- Find out why the port is open. Review your router’s port-forwarding rules and features such as remote administration. Menu names and locations vary by router and firmware, so consult the documentation for your model rather than assuming a universal path.
- Remove exposure you do not need. Turn off the relevant service or delete its forwarding rule. CISA advises disabling unnecessary, unused, exploitable, or plaintext protocols.
- Protect services that must remain reachable. Where the router allows it, restrict who can connect. Use strong, unique authentication and keep the exposed service patched. Replace devices that no longer receive security updates.
- Check from outside your home network. A scan from a device on your local network does not show what is reachable from the internet. Verify from a separate internet connection or use an authorized external exposure-checking service. Assess only systems you own or have permission to test.
- Consider IPv6 as well as IPv4. If your router and internet provider use IPv6, check that management interfaces and other services are not unintentionally exposed over it. CISA specifically warns against unintended IPv6 management exposure.
CISA’s Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance says to “Regularly review and monitor your internet-accessible assets.” It also recommends patching systems, changing default passwords, replacing devices outside security support, and conducting routine assessments. Its guidance identifies Shodan, Censys, and Shadowserver as platforms that can help identify internet-connected assets; their inclusion is not an endorsement, and no inventory service guarantees that it captures every service at every moment.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRapid7 Project Sonar offers another example of how exposure inventories work: it scans public IPv4 addresses to see whether service ports respond, then communicates with identified endpoints for additional information. Rapid7 says the project surveys more than 70 services and protocols. Such scans explain how a public-facing service can be discovered, but they are not a consumer guarantee that every port is checked continuously.

- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
What to do if you find a port you did not expect
- Check the router’s forwarding rules and enabled features to identify what uses it.
- If the service is not needed, disable it or remove its forwarding rule, then verify externally that it is no longer reachable.
- If you need the service, update it, secure its credentials, and limit access where possible.
- If the port appears to expose router administration, disable internet-facing administration unless you have a specific, secure need for it.
NIST’s NISTIR 8425A, published September 10, 2024, sets out recommended cybersecurity requirements for consumer-grade router products. It is a security profile, not a recommendation to replace a working router simply because a port is open; first determine whether the exposure is intentional and whether it can be safely removed.
