Yes—if you want a card you can move between consoles, or you specifically want a release with its game data on the card. But “physical” on Nintendo Switch 2 does not always mean the game is stored on the card: a game-key card is a key for downloading the game, and it must remain inserted to play. Check the format and download size for each title before buying.
What “physical” means on Switch 2
Switch 2 games may come as standard game cards or game-key cards. The distinction matters: a standard game card is the format to look for if you want the game data on the card, while a game-key card does not contain the full game data. Its packaging identifies it as a game-key card. Nintendo explains the format in its Game-Key Card Overview and describes inserting and removing cards in its game card instructions.

That means a box on a shelf is not enough to tell you whether you can play without a substantial download. Read the packaging or the official store listing for the exact release; do not assume every boxed copy contains all of its game data.

| What matters | Standard game card | Game-key card | Digital purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where the game data comes from | The standard card format; check the specific title’s packaging and listing. | The card is a key for downloading the game data. | The software is downloaded. |
| Initial download | The game-key-card download requirement does not apply as such; title-specific updates or requirements may still apply. | Requires an internet connection and enough free storage for the initial download. | Requires a download. |
| What you need to start play | The game card. | The game-key card, even after the download is complete. | No physical card; access follows Nintendo’s account, virtual-game-card and online-license rules. |
| Using it on another console | Insert the physical card in the console where you want to play. | Insert the key card; the first launch on a console requires an internet connection and download. | Nintendo’s account and virtual-game-card or online-license rules apply. |
| Where saves are stored | System memory, not the game card. | System memory, not the key card. | System memory. |
Nintendo’s game-key-card guidance says the card is still needed after downloading. For digital access across consoles, consult Nintendo’s current guidance on playing games across multiple Switch consoles; the rules are not the same as simply moving a card.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
What a game-key card requires
Before you can play a game-key-card release, you need to download its game data. That first download requires internet access and enough free space in system memory or on a microSD Express card. Nintendo says the required space is shown on the game-key-card packaging and on the Nintendo Store or eShop listing; check the figure for the title you are considering rather than relying on a general estimate.
Once the download is complete, you can start the game without an internet connection, but the game-key card must be inserted. So this format combines a download with a physical card requirement: it can suit someone who wants an item to carry between consoles, but it is not a way to avoid downloading the game. Nintendo’s Game-Key Card Overview sets out these requirements.

What follows the card—and what does not
The game can move; your save does not
A physical card can be inserted into another compatible console, but the card is not where your progress lives. Nintendo says Switch 2 save data is stored in system memory whether you play from a card or downloaded software. To continue on another console, you need to transfer save data or use supported Nintendo Switch Online cloud saves. Availability and support can depend on the game. See Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ and its multi-console play guidance.

A card is a tangible item, and Nintendo’s user agreement recognizes physical media sold through retailers. But that does not establish what a particular game will resell for, or a universal resale rule across jurisdictions. The agreement also makes clear that buying or using software does not transfer Nintendo’s intellectual-property rights. See the Nintendo Switch 2 User Agreement.

Choose by the trade-off you care about
- Choose a standard game card if having game data on the card is important. Confirm the specific release’s format on the packaging or official listing.
- Consider a game-key card if you are willing to download the game and want a card you can insert and move between consoles. Keep the card: it is needed to play.
- Choose digital if you do not need a physical card and are comfortable with Nintendo’s account-based access rules.
- Check storage before buying a game-key card. Compare its listed download requirement with available system memory. A microSD Express card is relevant if you need more room for downloaded software; physical-game owners do not automatically need one.
- Plan separately for saves if you expect to switch consoles. Moving the game card alone does not move your progress.
Bottom line: buy the format, not just the box
Physical Switch 2 games still make sense when the card itself matters to you, especially if the release is a standard game card or you value carrying a game between consoles. A game-key card offers a physical card but requires a download and still has to be inserted to play. Check each title’s format and storage requirement before paying; the word “physical” alone does not tell you what is on the card.
