For founders, the better choice depends on the workload, quality requirements, costs at the company’s expected scale, and how much control or customization the product needs. TechCrunch Events’ October 5, 2026 preview of four conversations at Disrupt 2026 frames model choice as an evolving decision: companies may combine models, customize open weights, or change their approach as capabilities and economics shift.
What will TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 explore about AI?
TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 is scheduled for October 13–15 in San Francisco, according to the official event page. A TechCrunch Events preview published October 5 describes four conversations spanning model strategy, deployment choices, open versus proprietary AI, and hardware design. The sessions pose trade-offs and questions; they are not a comparative benchmark ranking model types.

How companies navigate a multi-model world
“The Real Tokenmaxxing: How the Best AI Companies Navigate a Multi-Model World” brings together Mo Jomaa, partner at CapitalG; Vipul Ved Prakash, co-founder and CEO of Together AI; and Zuzanna Stamirowska, CEO and co-founder of Pathway. The discussion is set to examine why companies use multiple models, how they balance cost, performance, and flexibility, and when open models may outperform proprietary alternatives.
When to rent, customize, or build
On the Real World AI Stage, Oumi CEO and co-founder Manos Koukoumidis will discuss “Which AI Should Your Company Actually Deploy: Rent, Customize, or Build.” The preview says the session will compare frontier APIs, customized open weights, and owning more of the AI stack, using audience polls, startup scenarios, and a practical framework.

The Ryzen AI Max+ 395 excels in consumer AI workloads like the llama.cpp-powered application: LM Studio. Shaping up to be the must-have app for client LLM workloads, LM Studio allows users to locally run the latest language model without any technical knowledge required and unleash their creativity and productivity.
- AMD RADEON 8090S iGPU GAMING PC - The AMD Radeon RX 8060S offers all 40 CUs with up to 2.9 GHz graphics clock and uses the new RDNA 3.5 architecture. The powerful iGPU is positioned between an RTX 4060 and 4070 laptop GPU and therefore enables gaming in FHD at maximum details in most demanding games. The 8060S can also utilize the full 128GB pool, which is perfect for running LLMs such as Deepseek 70B Q8, which runs comfortably on this machine.
- EIGHT CHANNEL LPDDR5X - LPDDR5X is a new ground breaking memory small form factor installed on-board. With blazing speeds up to to 8000MT/s, it runs 1.5x faster than the DDR5 SODIMMs; 90% better performance over DDR5 SODIMMs in video conferencing and photo editing; 30% better performance in productivity apps; 12% better performance in digital content workloads.
- QUAD SCREEN 8K DISPLAY SUPPORT - EVO-X2 AI Mini PC support 4-screen 4K/8K output via HDMI 2.1 (8K@60Hz), DisplayPort 1.4 (4K@60Hz), and dual USB 4 40Gbps Transfer speed (supporting PD3.0/DP1.4/DATA). Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.
Trade-offs between open and proprietary AI
Nvidia’s Nader Khalil, Director of Developer Tech, and Sydney Sykes, Global Head of VC Partnerships, are scheduled to discuss open and proprietary AI. A related TechCrunch preview identifies cost, infrastructure, margins, differentiation, speed, and control as among the trade-offs. Those are questions for founders to assess in context, not established advantages of either approach.
What happens when AI helps design hardware?
“When AI Starts Designing Its Own Hardware” features Ricursive Intelligence CEO and founder Anna Goldie and founder and CTO Azalia Mirhoseini. The preview says the conversation will cover AI-assisted chip and hardware optimization and the connection between model architecture and hardware. It does not establish that a particular chip or hardware product is necessary for a startup choosing an AI model.

Should a startup use an open or proprietary AI model?
Start with the product’s actual workload, then compare viable options against the requirements that matter. TechCrunch’s October 5 preview raises these decision areas but does not supply head-to-head tests, cost figures, or security comparisons. A choice should therefore come from evaluation on the startup’s tasks and operating assumptions, rather than a blanket claim that one model category is better.

- Workload fit and quality: Test candidate models on representative product tasks and judge them against the quality, latency, and reliability your users need. The preview does not rank open and proprietary models on performance.
- Costs and margins: Estimate expenses using expected usage, scale, and the full deployment approach. The available previews give no comparable prices or cost figures, so they cannot establish which option is cheaper.
- Control and infrastructure: Consider data handling, operational responsibility, and infrastructure requirements. The Nvidia-related preview raises these as trade-offs but does not provide a security or compliance comparison.
- Customization and ownership: Ask whether adapting open weights or building more of the stack solves a meaningful workload problem. Include the time and resources needed to customize or operate it, not just the appeal of greater control.
- Flexibility and differentiation: Consider whether the product can use multiple models or switch as capabilities and economics change. TechCrunch’s analysis argues that access to a common API alone does not establish differentiation; data, workflows, distribution, customer relationships, product experience, or specialized technology may matter. That is an analytical perspective, not a universal rule.
Should a startup rent, customize, or build?
These are options to compare, not a maturity ladder every company must climb. Renting through a frontier API, customizing open weights, and owning more of the AI stack each involve different balances of product fit, resources, and operational responsibility. Koukoumidis’s session is framed around that comparison, but the preview does not prescribe a choice for any particular startup.

- Rent: Consider an API when it fits the product task and the startup wants to rely on an external service rather than own more of the stack. Evaluate the resulting costs, control, and dependency against your requirements.
- Customize: Consider adapting open weights when a specific workload warrants tailoring the model. Weigh the likely fit against the time, expertise, infrastructure, and ongoing work required.
- Build or own more: Consider this when a concrete product or operational need justifies taking on more of the stack. The added ownership also means more responsibility; the preview supplies no universal threshold at which it becomes worthwhile.
Can one product use multiple AI models?
Yes. The multi-model session is specifically about why companies use multiple models and how they balance cost, performance, and flexibility. A founder can evaluate models against different product tasks instead of assuming one model must serve every purpose. The source does not prescribe a routing design or claim that using multiple models is always more efficient.
Before adopting that approach, identify what each model is meant to do and compare the resulting quality, costs, and operational complexity with a simpler setup. Preserve flexibility where it helps the product, but do not treat model count as a measure of technical advantage.

How should founders think about AI and hardware?
The hardware session points to a connection between model architecture and hardware, and to AI-assisted chip optimization. For most founders, the useful question is whether their model and deployment choices create real infrastructure needs—not whether the event mentions hardware. The preview identifies no required product, chip, or hardware configuration for readers.
