Alpha is described as a private, invitation-only Discord group of about 30 mostly Gen Z traders who share research to find mispriced bets on Polymarket. The group is reported to have earned an estimated $40 million collectively since 2024. That figure comes from Financial Times reporting as reproduced on October 5, 2026 by the Greek outlet Naftemporiki and the Romanian outlet HotNews. It is not an audited total, and neither republication explains how it was calculated.
Who Alpha is, as reported
According to the republished FT profile, Alpha formed in spring 2024, when the U.S. election was drawing many casual traders to Polymarket. It has about 30 members spread across five continents, most of them Gen Z. New members are reportedly nominated by existing ones and approved by a group vote. A trading record and a distinctive area of expertise count alongside capital.

A note on “pooled capital”
The reporting describes pooled research: members combine specialist knowledge to judge probabilities. The republications we reviewed do not establish that members pool money into a shared fund. Treat the $40 million as a collective estimate of members’ earnings, not as the return on a common account.
#1 Best Overall
How the group reportedly finds an edge
The account describes a simple loop. Members with relevant expertise, working quickly together, estimate the true probability of an event. They then look for cases where the market price seems to disagree. The profile gives two examples.
Example 1: Kurakhove, November 2024
Members reportedly examined a drone video, map coordinates, aerial imagery and translated Russian text to judge whether Ukraine would lose the town of Kurakhove before a deadline. One trader asked where exactly an explosion in the video had happened. The group’s specialist put the chance of the city not falling before December at 70%. Ukraine still held it when December arrived, and the account reportedly received just over $7,000.
Example 2: the Bitcoin reserve order
The profile also describes a large trader placing a $1 million order on whether Donald Trump would create a Bitcoin reserve in his first 100 days. Alpha members reportedly took about half of the other side within a minute. Polymarket data cited by the FT put their total profit at roughly $250,000.
Both are single reported anecdotes picked for a profile. They show the method the article describes. They do not show that it repeats reliably or that results are typical.

Tactics attributed to one trader
A trader using the handle @sigh, described as an Oxford student, is credited with several habits:
- Watching for stale orders left open after the underlying facts have changed.
- Reviewing large positions and the crypto wallets of counterparties.
- Trying to tell informed analysis apart from political enthusiasm.
These are reported descriptions, not tested advice. He is also rendered, in translation, as saying there is free money on the floor, but you have to be there and click very fast. The Greek version reads «Υπάρχουν δωρεάν χρήματα στο πάτωμα. Αλλά πρέπει να είσαι εκεί. Και πρέπει να κάνεις κλικ πολύ γρήγορα.» The wording here is a translation of a translation. The original English quote was not available to us.
The wider numbers in the story
The republications place Alpha against broader figures. Each is attributed to the FT account and none was independently checked.

| Claim | Attribution and caveat |
|---|---|
| About $40 million earned collectively since 2024 | Estimate in FT reporting as republished by Naftemporiki and HotNews, October 2026. No methodology given. |
| Two-thirds of Polymarket users lost money | Cited from “a study” of transactions from 2022. The republications do not identify its authors or publisher. |
| 1% of profitable traders took more than three-quarters of profits; 0.1% took half | Attributed to the FT account. Underlying calculations not available. |
| About $1.6 billion per day in combined Polymarket and Kalshi trading in August, up nearly 2,000% year on year | FT figure as republished. The excerpts do not state the year of that August. This is not a verified exchange statistic. |
| Prediction markets could reach $1 trillion in annual turnover by 2030 | Bernstein analysts’ estimate as cited. A forecast, not a realized figure. |
Taken together, these claims suggest that a small, skilled, fast-moving group sits at the top of a very lopsided market. Alpha’s reported winnings are better read as an outlier than a benchmark.

The personal costs the profile describes
The profile does not present the winnings as a clean success story. It reports compulsive attention to breaking events, disrupted sleep and poor concentration. It also says one trader attends gambling-addiction support meetings. @sigh is rendered in Greek as saying he no longer has thoughts («Δεν έχω πια σκέψεις») and describing the market as a travesty of capitalism («Μια παρωδία του καπιταλισμού»). Both are translated renderings, and his full name is not given.
Don’t confuse it with “Poly Alpha”
DL News has covered a separate Discord channel called Poly Alpha in connection with disputed market outcomes. DL News said it could not independently verify bettors’ allegations. Nothing in the reporting links that channel to the Alpha group profiled by the FT.
What is and isn’t established
- Established as reported: a small invite-only group, a vote-based admission process, and a research-driven approach, all per the FT as republished.
- Not established: the $40 million total, the pooling of funds, repeatable profitability, and the study behind the loss statistics.
- Not located: the original FT article, so the full context of the interviews and the original English quotes are unverified. The details above rest on the two republications.
Membership, platform conditions and volume figures change quickly, so treat all of this as a snapshot from early October 2026.

Alpha is an intriguing example of expertise and speed applied to prediction markets. The evidence is a reported profile, not verified accounts. The $40 million is an estimate, and the same story says most Polymarket users lose money.
