Choose open-ear earbuds if you want to hear more of the sounds around you while listening; choose in-ear earbuds if you want a closer fit and more isolation. Those are design tendencies, not guarantees: comfort, sound and isolation depend on the particular earbuds, how they fit and where you use them. Neither style is hearing protection, and neither makes outdoor activity automatically safe.
What is the difference between open-ear and in-ear earbuds?
Open-ear earbuds sit outside the ear canal, leaving it unblocked. The term describes a fit category, not one specific audio technology: open-ear earbuds are not all bone-conduction devices. In-ear earbuds use an eartip that sits in the canal; a closer seal can reduce some outside sound.

That distinction is a starting point, not a reliable promise about every product. The degree of isolation and the sound you hear depend on the model, the fit and the listening environment.

Which style is better for your listening situation?
| What matters most | Open-ear earbuds | In-ear earbuds |
|---|---|---|
| Hearing nearby sounds | Often a better fit for listeners who want the ear canal unblocked and more awareness of ambient sound. | A closer seal can reduce outside sound, so nearby sounds may be less prominent. |
| Listening in noisy places | Less isolation can make listening harder when the surroundings are loud. | May suit listeners who want more isolation. Compatible, well-fitted noise-cancelling headphones can reduce the need to raise volume in noisy situations, according to WHO guidance; not every in-ear model has noise cancellation. |
| Fit and comfort | May suit someone who dislikes having an eartip in the canal, but comfort is individual and is not guaranteed by the style. | Fit depends on the eartip and your ears; an uncomfortable or insecure fit can make this style a poor choice. |
| Sound | Performance varies by model and listening conditions. | Performance varies by model and fit; the style alone does not establish which earbuds will sound better to you. |
Are open-ear earbuds better than in-ear?
Neither style is better for everyone. Open-ear earbuds are the more natural choice if hearing conversation or ambient sound while listening is a priority and you accept less isolation. In-ear earbuds are more likely to suit you if you prefer a closer fit and want to reduce outside sound, particularly in noisy settings.

Comfort is personal, so try a secure, comfortable fit when possible instead of relying on the style label. NIDCD notes that some people prefer open-fit hearing aids because their own voice does not sound “plugged up.” That observation concerns hearing aids, not consumer earbuds, and does not establish that open-ear earbuds are more comfortable.
Which style works for commuting or running?
Open-ear earbuds may help you hear more ambient sound while walking, running or commuting, but awareness is not a substitute for attention to traffic, people or other hazards. Do not treat either style as making a route or activity safe.

In-ear earbuds may work better when you want more isolation, including in a noisy setting. If you use compatible noise-cancelling headphones, WHO guidance says they can reduce the need to turn up the volume in noise. Follow local rules and remain alert to your surroundings regardless of the earbuds you choose.
Do open-ear earbuds protect your hearing?
No. Leaving the ear canal unblocked does not make loud listening safe or protect your hearing. WHO says sound level, listening duration and frequency of exposure all affect hearing risk. NIDCD says sounds at or below 70 dBA are unlikely to cause hearing loss even after long exposure, while long or repeated exposure at or above 85 dBA can cause hearing loss. NIDCD also identifies loud headphone listening as a recreational risk.

WHO offers these general safe-listening examples: 80 dB for up to 40 hours a week, and four hours a week at 90 dB. It also recommends keeping device volume at no more than 60% of maximum and staying below an 80 dB average when using an app to monitor sound. The 60% figure is not a calibrated sound level that means the same thing on every device.
The WHO-ITU safe-listening standard describes device dosimetry that tracks listening level and duration as a share of a reference allowance. Its example modes are 80 dB for 40 hours per week for adults and 75 dB for 40 hours per week for children. These are standard details, not a feature to assume every pair of earbuds provides. WHO also reports that more than 1 billion young people aged 12–35 are at risk from recreational exposure to loud sound; that estimate is not specific to earbuds or either style.
For either kind of earbuds, lower the volume, take breaks, limit time spent listening loudly and monitor exposure when you can. The WHO’s safe-listening guidance and the NIDCD overview of noise-induced hearing loss explain the risks in more detail.
