Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo open Excel in Safe Mode on Windows, hold Ctrl while you double-click the Excel shortcut and confirm the prompt, or press Windows+R, enter excel /safe, and select OK. This starts Excel with reduced functionality; it does not start Windows in Safe Mode.
Choose a way to start Excel in Safe Mode
Both methods launch the same Excel Safe Mode. Use the shortcut method when it is easy to reach; use Run if that is more convenient or the shortcut is unavailable. Microsoft lists these instructions for Microsoft 365 and Office 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2024.

| Method | What to do | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Excel shortcut | Hold Ctrl, double-click the Excel shortcut, then confirm that you want to start in Safe Mode. | The shortcut is easy to find. |
| Run | Press Windows+R, type excel /safe with a space before /safe, then select OK. You can also right-click Start and choose Run. |
You prefer a keyboard command or do not have a handy shortcut. |
These steps come from Microsoft Support’s instructions for opening Office apps in Safe Mode.
Check that Excel started in Safe Mode
Look at the Excel title bar. It should include “Safe Mode,” such as “Microsoft Excel (Safe Mode).” If you used the shortcut, make sure you confirmed the prompt; if Excel opened normally, close it and try again.

What Safe Mode changes—and what it can tell you
Excel Safe Mode bypasses certain startup features and settings, including alternative startup locations, changed toolbars, Excel startup folders, Excel add-ins, and most COM add-ins. That makes it a useful test when Excel crashes or hangs during startup: if Excel opens in Safe Mode but not normally, an add-in or startup configuration may be involved. Safe Mode is a diagnostic step, not a repair, and it does not identify the cause on its own.
Safe Mode also limits some behavior. For example, recovered documents may not open automatically, additional features and programs may not load automatically, and preferences may not be saved. Some restrictions Microsoft lists for Office Safe Mode may not apply to every Office application. As Microsoft Support notes, Office Safe Mode is different from Windows Safe Mode.

If Excel opens in Safe Mode, investigate add-ins
- In Excel, go to File > Options > Add-ins.
- Disable an add-in, then close Excel and start it normally to see whether the original problem returns.
- For a more careful diagnosis, disable one add-in at a time and retest. If the problem returns after you re-enable one, investigate that add-in or check with its publisher for an updated version.
Microsoft’s guidance on Excel not responding, hanging, freezing, or stopping describes Safe Mode as part of troubleshooting, including checking add-ins.

If Excel cannot start even in Safe Mode, continue troubleshooting rather than assuming the workbook is corrupt or an add-in is at fault. Microsoft recommends steps such as installing Office updates or repairing Office. See Microsoft’s guidance for Office apps that stop working at startup.
