If your OnePlus phone will not charge, is charging slowly, or becomes unusually hot, start with the external charging setup and the phone’s temperature and workload. Use a safe, model-compatible charger and cable, charge in a ventilated place, and stop immediately if the battery is swollen, leaking, damaged, or abnormally hot. If those checks do not restore normal charging, move to software troubleshooting and then OnePlus support rather than opening the phone.
First decide whether this is a safety problem
A warm phone during charging is not automatically defective. Charging converts some electrical energy into heat, and demanding tasks can add more. However, certain symptoms mean troubleshooting should end immediately.

- Stop using and charging the phone if the battery or phone becomes abnormally hot, the back cover or screen begins to lift, the body is distorted, or you see or smell leakage.
- Stop using a phone that has been physically damaged, especially after a drop, crush, puncture, or liquid incident.
- Do not open the phone, puncture the battery, bend it, or attempt an internal battery replacement yourself.
- Move away from damaged chargers, frayed cables, cracked plugs, loose connectors, or accessories that become hot at the plug.
OnePlus safety guidance says to discontinue use and contact customer support or a service center when a battery shows high temperature, distortion, or leakage. A damaged battery can be hazardous even if the phone still turns on.
Use the lowest-risk charging checks first
Work through these checks in order. They separate a faulty outlet or accessory from a problem inside the phone without requiring you to disassemble anything.

1. Test a different wall outlet
- Unplug the charger from the current outlet.
- Connect it directly to another known-working wall outlet. Avoid a loose extension lead, overloaded power strip, or travel adapter during this test.
- Check whether the phone shows a charging icon, percentage increase, or charging animation.
If the second outlet works, the original outlet or its switch, strip, or extension is the likely cause. If neither outlet works, continue with the cable and adapter checks.
2. Inspect the cable and adapter
Look along the entire cable for cuts, crushed sections, exposed conductors, bent ends, discoloration, or a connector that no longer fits firmly. Inspect the adapter for cracks, burn marks, rattling, a bent plug, or unusual heat. Do not continue using visibly damaged accessories.
For a controlled test, use a known-good OnePlus or manufacturer-approved adapter and cable that are verified for your exact phone model and market. OnePlus recommends approved accessories and warns that incorrect-voltage or unsafe chargers can cause poor contact, slow charging, or damage. A higher advertised wattage is not automatically compatible; charging behavior depends on the model, charger, cable, and regional version.
Swap only one item at a time when possible. For example, keep the original adapter and test a known-good cable, then keep that cable and test a known-good adapter. This identifies the failed part instead of replacing everything without evidence. If a replacement works only briefly or becomes hot at its connector, stop using it rather than treating intermittent charging as acceptable.
3. Check the charging port without inserting anything
Shine a light into the port and look for lint, dust, bent contacts, corrosion, or a connector that sits at an angle. A dirty socket can prevent firm electrical contact. Do not insert a needle, paper clip, knife, or other metal object, and do not pour liquid or cleaning fluid into the port. Metal can short contacts or bend them; liquid can turn a minor obstruction into corrosion.
If the connector only works when held at a particular angle, disconnect it and arrange service. Repeatedly forcing a loose plug can damage the port further. A port that feels mechanically loose, has visible corrosion, or was exposed to liquid is not a good candidate for home repair.
Control temperature and workload before judging the charger
Charging speed and heat are affected by the phone’s environment and what it is doing at the same time. Move it out of direct sun, a hot car, a bed, or a tightly enclosed case. Place it on a hard, dry surface in a ventilated room and let it cool naturally.

OnePlus publishes two temperature recommendations for different purposes:

These figures are manufacturer recommendations, not statistics about how often phones fail. They also come from guidance with different contexts and regions, so do not treat them as proof that every OnePlus model behaves identically.
Do not put the phone in a refrigerator or freezer to cool it. Rapid temperature changes can create condensation inside the phone and may damage components. Remove an insulating case if it is trapping heat, but do not charge the phone on a wet or cold surface.
Pause demanding activity while testing
Stop games, video recording, video calls, navigation, large file transfers, hotspot use, and high-brightness display settings while you test charging. Background applications, poor cellular signal, and repeated network searches can also increase power draw. These are possible contributors, not a diagnosis: a healthy phone may still warm up during heavy use, while a fault can exist without any demanding app running.
After stopping the workload, wait for the phone to cool in the ventilated environment and then reconnect the approved charger. If the percentage rises normally and heat falls, workload or ambient temperature was contributing. If the phone remains hot while idle, disconnect it and continue with software checks or support.
Separate ordinary charging from a fast-charging problem
There are two different situations:
- No charging: the percentage does not increase, the phone repeatedly connects and disconnects, or no charging indicator appears with a known-good setup.
- Charging works but fast charging does not: the percentage rises, but the expected flash-charging label or speed is absent.
For the second situation, check temperature first. OnePlus says flash charging may not engage below 15°C or above 35°C. Confirm the exact model’s charger and cable requirements in its manual or model-specific OnePlus support page before buying a replacement. Do not choose an accessory solely because its wattage number is larger.
Give the phone enough time to establish charging after reconnecting. A deeply discharged device may show a delayed screen response. If it repeatedly starts and stops, becomes hot at the connector, or never gains charge after the external checks, disconnect it rather than repeatedly cycling the plug.

What to record during a charging test
Make the test repeatable instead of relying on a single icon. Note the starting battery percentage, the outlet used, the exact adapter and cable, whether the case was removed, the room conditions, and whether the screen or a demanding app was active. Recheck after a short period of idle charging. A percentage that rises steadily with falling temperature is a different problem from a connector that repeatedly cuts out or a phone that heats while doing nothing.
Do not compare your result with an advertised charging time from another OnePlus model. Different batteries, charging modes, regional packages, software versions, and temperatures can produce different results. The useful comparison is your phone with a compatible known-good setup under similar conditions.
Check software and recent changes
If the phone charges but heats, drains unusually quickly, or began behaving differently after an update or app installation, use software troubleshooting. Keep the phone connected only if it remains at a safe temperature.
Review recently installed apps
Think about when the heat or drain began. If it followed a newly installed or updated app, uninstall that recent addition temporarily and observe the phone at idle. OnePlus troubleshooting guidance specifically suggests checking recently installed apps. Reinstall only after normal charging and temperature behavior returns, and use the developer’s current release.
Install available system updates
Open the phone’s Settings app and look for the system-software or software-update section. The exact label and location depend on the OxygenOS version and region. Install an available update over a reliable connection, with sufficient battery or the charger connected safely. Do not interrupt an update by forcibly powering off the phone.

Use the normal power menu to restart. A restart can clear a stuck background process or temporary charging-state error, but it cannot repair a damaged port, cable, or battery. If the phone is too hot to handle comfortably, disconnect the charger and let it cool before restarting.
Reserve a factory reset for the end
A factory reset erases user data and is not a first-line charging repair. OnePlus places it after other troubleshooting steps. Before considering it:

- Back up photos, messages, contacts, authentication codes, and other important data.
- Confirm that you know the account credentials needed to set the phone up again.
- Record the exact model and OxygenOS version and check the model-specific reset path.
- Reset only after external accessories, temperature, recent apps, updates, and a restart have been checked.
If the phone cannot remain powered long enough to complete a backup, do not keep charging a hot or damaged device merely to attempt a reset. Seek service instead.
Use symptoms to choose the next action

When a replacement charger or cable makes sense
An approved replacement is reasonable when the existing adapter or cable is visibly damaged, intermittently connects, or fails the one-at-a-time swap test. Buy for the exact OnePlus model and regional version, and verify all of the following before ordering:
- The adapter and cable are original or manufacturer-approved for that model.
- The package includes the components your phone requires; some products include an adapter, while others are cable-only.
- The supported charging mode matches the phone’s documented mode, rather than relying on a headline wattage.
- The seller and service terms apply in your country.
- The connector fits securely without pressure or an unusual angle.
A new accessory cannot fix an internally damaged port, charging circuit, or battery. If two known-good, compatible setups behave the same way, stop buying chargers and arrange model-specific diagnosis.
Contact OnePlus support or repair
Use the OnePlus support page for your country or region when basic external checks fail, when software troubleshooting does not change the behavior, or when you suspect a battery or port fault. Support and repair availability, spare-parts channels, and procedures vary by market and can change over time. The UK support site, for example, lists repair help, service centers, and official spare parts through a regional partner; that information should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
Have these details ready:
- Exact model name and regional variant.
- OxygenOS version, if the phone can display it.
- When the problem began and whether it followed a drop, liquid exposure, update, or app installation.
- Which outlet, adapter, and cable combinations you tested.
- Whether ordinary charging works, whether fast charging works, and what temperature or workload was present.
- Photos of visible damage, if doing so is safe and does not require handling a swollen or leaking phone.
Do not ship or carry a phone with a visibly swollen, leaking, or dangerously hot battery without first following the support provider’s safety instructions. Tell them about the battery condition before arranging transport.

- Charge in a ventilated place within the manufacturer’s 5°C–35°C charging guidance.
- Keep the port and connectors dry and avoid forcing a plug.
- Use approved accessories matched to the exact phone model and region.
- Limit gaming, navigation, hotspot use, high brightness, and large transfers while charging when the phone is already warm.
- Keep system software current and pay attention to heat or drain that begins immediately after an app change.
- Inspect cables and adapters periodically and replace damaged ones instead of taping or bending them back into use.
- Do not cover the phone with bedding or place it on a heat-trapping surface while charging.
The practical boundary is clear: external setup, temperature, workload, and software can be checked safely at home; a damaged battery, loose or corroded port, persistent abnormal heat, or repeated failure with known-good accessories requires OnePlus support or professional repair.

Why did OnePlus fast charging stop working while normal charging still works?
Flash charging may not activate below 15°C or above 35°C. Let the phone return to a moderate temperature, stop demanding activity, and retry with a charger and cable approved for the exact model. Do not select a replacement based only on a higher wattage rating.
Should I put an overheating OnePlus phone in a refrigerator or freezer?

Stop heavy use and remember that flash charging may pause below 15°C or above 35°C. If the phone is damaged, swollen, leaking, persistently hot, or still fails with known-good accessories, disconnect it and contact OnePlus support or an authorized service center instead of opening it.
