The OnePlus 15R is the newer phone and wins on paper in most headline specs: a newer Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip, a 7,400mAh battery against 5,500mAh, and a 165Hz display against the 12R’s 1–120Hz panel. The 12R keeps a dedicated 2MP macro camera, a well-documented LTPO 4.0 display and an official software-support pledge. On price, the 15R launched at $699.99 in the US, but a reliable current price gap depends on live local listings, which change often.
OnePlus 12R vs OnePlus 15R at a glance
The 15R display, battery, charging and camera details below come largely from comparison coverage (TechRadar) and a OnePlus specification listing that surfaced in search. The 12R figures come from OnePlus’s own US specification pages and launch announcement. Treat the 15R numbers as reported values and check your regional listing before buying.

Price difference: what can and cannot be said
TechRadar reports that the 15R was announced in December 2025 and began shipping in January 2026. Its US launch prices were $699.99 for 256GB and $799.99 for 512GB, and its UK prices were £649 and £729. TechRadar also noted the phone was not available in Australia at the time of its comparison.

These are launch prices, not today’s prices. A verified launch or current price for the 12R was not available, and the 12R has been on the market since 2024, so retailer discounts, clearance stock and refurbished units are likely to move it well away from its original price. A fair price difference needs three things:
#1 Best Overall
- [ Military Grade Case] - Drop Tested Rugged Case Compatible with OnePlus 12R 5G from all angles - Shockproof/Drop-proof/Impact resistant/Scratch-proof.
- [ Safe Screen Protection ] - Extra raised lips and corners of the front hard frame provide super protection from drops, keep your screen safe.
- [ Case with Kickstand] - Built-in Pull out kickstand for hands-free viewing in portrait or landscape mode.
- [ BUILT-IN-SCREEN PROTECTOR with Fingerprint stamp ] - MAKE SURE REMOVE ANY AIR BUBBLES BETWEEN FINGERPRINT SCANNER AND FINGERPRINT STAMP. Please carefully read FINGERPRINT STAMP TIPS on the DESCRIPTION SECTION and watch INSTALLATION GUIDE VIDEO, follow steps for smooth installation.
- [ Extra Front Frame ] - Included two front frames, one with film, one without film. Enjoy the case with a built-in screen protector or use the front frame without film with your own tempered glass. Both choices should work out perfectly.
- The same country and currency for both phones.
- Matching storage and RAM. The 12R’s 8GB/128GB base model is not comparable with a 15R at 256GB.
- The same condition: new, open-box or refurbished, and the same warranty terms.
Also check the local box contents. Charger inclusion is listed for the 12R in the US, but it can differ by market.
Display: refresh rate versus panel technology
The 12R’s panel is well documented: LTPO 4.0 lets it vary the refresh rate between 1Hz and 120Hz, which saves power on static content. The 15R is reported with a larger 6.83-inch screen and a 165Hz peak refresh rate. Whether it also uses variable refresh is not established in the sources used here.
A higher number helps mainly in games that support 165Hz, and few do. Refresh rate does not by itself indicate better colour, brightness or battery behavior, so look at independent display measurements if screen quality matters most.
Performance: Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 vs Snapdragon 8 Gen 5
The 12R uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. OnePlus announced on November 26, 2025 that the 15R would debut as the world’s first smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. Two chip generations apart, the 15R should be the faster and likely more efficient phone, and it should stay current longer. No controlled head-to-head benchmark of these two phones was available, so the size of the gap is not quantified here.
OnePlus described the 12R at launch as “a performance-led powerhouse” and “designed to be the ultimate place to play games in 2024.” That is the company’s own marketing. The 8 Gen 2 is still a flagship-class chip, so for everyday use, social apps and video the 12R is unlikely to feel slow. The 15R matters more to heavy gamers and to buyers who keep phones for several years.

The 15R’s reported 7,400mAh typical capacity is about 35% larger than the 12R’s 5,500mAh. That is a big gap on paper. But capacity is not runtime: screen size, a 165Hz panel, chip efficiency and software tuning all affect endurance. No independent battery-life test comparing the two was found, so don’t assume a proportional gain.
Wired charging is listed at 80W on the 12R (SUPERVOOC) and up to 80W on the 15R, so charging speed in minutes will depend on the larger battery and the charger you use. Neither phone has wireless charging according to the sources used here.
Cameras
Both phones pair a 50MP main camera with an 8MP ultrawide. The 12R’s main sensor is the Sony IMX890 with optical image stabilization. It adds a 2MP macro camera, which is low resolution and of limited use; many reviewers treat such sensors as filler, though this comparison did not test it. The 15R is reported without a macro or telephoto camera. Sensor details for the 15R main camera were not established in the sources used here.
No head-to-head image comparison is available, so don’t infer a winner from megapixels. If zoom is a priority, neither phone lists a telephoto lens.
Software support
OnePlus states that the 12R gets at least three Android OS upgrades and four years of security updates from launch. As the 12R launched in 2024, a good part of that window has already passed. A confirmed support term for the 15R was not available, so check OnePlus’s regional page before buying. A phone launched in early 2026 should in practice have a longer remaining window than one from 2024.
Quick Recap
Which one should you buy?
- Choose the 15R if the street-price gap is modest, you play demanding games, you want the largest battery, or you plan to keep the phone for years.
- Choose the 12R if you find it at a clearly lower price with matching storage, you value its proven LTPO 1–120Hz display, or you simply don’t need the latest chip.
- Skip both if you need a telephoto camera or wireless charging.
