Apple says the feature shows whether an object is level (parallel to the ground) or how many degrees it varies from level, and that measurements are approximate.
Check whether an object is level
- Open the Measure app. If you can’t find it, look in the Utilities folder on your Home Screen.
- Tap Level at the bottom of the screen.
- Hold the iPhone against the object, such as a picture frame.
- Rotate the object and the iPhone together until the display turns green. Green means the object is level.
If the screen isn’t green, the number on it shows how many degrees the object is off from level.

Match the slope of another object
Use this when you want a second object to sit at the same angle as a first one, for example a shelf that should follow a sloped wall.
- In Measure, tap Level.
- Hold the iPhone against the first object, then tap the screen to capture its slope.
- Move the iPhone to the second object and hold it against that object.
- Rotate both the object and the iPhone until the screen turns green. The two now share the same slope.
Reset the level
Tap the screen again to clear a captured slope and go back to a normal level reading. These steps come from Apple’s iPhone User Guide.

How accurate is it?
Apple states that the measurements are approximate. Apple publishes no accuracy figure for the feature, so treat it as a quick check. It suits hanging frames and judging whether a surface is roughly flat. For work where a small error matters, such as fitting cabinetry or setting up appliances, a physical spirit level gives you an independent check. That is a practical suggestion, not Apple’s advice.
