Most of the time, a blurry photo that arrives on someone else’s phone is sharp on yours. The usual causes are a low-quality preview, compression, or a message route that limits attachment size. Check the original in Photos first. Then check the Low Quality Photo Previews setting and the type of message you sent.
Step 1: Work out whether the problem is the photo or the sending
Open the picture in Photos and zoom in. Then ask the recipient to open their copy at full size.

- The original is blurry too: the photo was captured or stored that way. No message setting can restore detail that was never recorded. Look at camera issues such as motion, focus or a smudged lens.
- The original is sharp and only the received copy is soft: the cause is in the sending route or the quality settings. Read on.
This split is a diagnostic shortcut based on how Apple describes previews and attachment compression. It is not a formal test.
Step 2: Turn off Low Quality Photo Previews
Apple’s iPhone User Guide describes a setting that sends smaller preview versions of photos. The previews can arrive before the full-resolution images. When Low Data Mode is on, only the preview is sent.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Messages.
- Turn off Send Low Quality Photo Previews.
That path matches Apple’s current guide. The label and menu location can differ on older iOS versions or in other languages. If you can’t find it, look in Settings > Messages instead.
Also check whether Low Data Mode is on for your Wi-Fi or cellular connection. Apple says it can cause only the preview to be sent.

Step 3: Check which kind of message you sent

| RCS | Green bubble | Supports high-resolution photos and videos. Availability depends on the carrier and on iOS support. |
| SMS/MMS | Green bubble | Carriers may set attachment size limits, so photos and videos may be compressed. |
A green bubble doesn’t tell you whether that message went by RCS or MMS. If a photo sent to an Android user looks poor, MMS limits are a likely cause. If the recipient is on iMessage and the photo still looks soft, the preview setting is the more likely culprit.
Apple states that your iPhone “can compress photo and video attachments when necessary,” and that carriers may limit attachment size. There is no universal MMS size limit. It varies by carrier, so ask yours.

Step 4: Rule out basic delivery problems
Apple’s messaging troubleshooting guidance lists these checks:
- Make sure the iPhone has enough free storage.
- Confirm you have a working Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
- Ask your carrier whether the message type you’re using is supported on your plan, and whether it applies an attachment limit.
Larger files take longer to send, so a slow connection can leave you looking at a preview for a while. Wait for the full image to finish before judging quality.

Step 5: Send an original-quality copy another way
If the photo still arrives degraded, send it as a link instead of a message attachment. Upload it to a cloud storage or file-sharing service and share the link. The recipient then downloads the file itself rather than a compressed message copy. Each service has its own handling rules, so check that service’s own documentation if quality matters. Apple’s sources don’t cover any third-party service.
You don’t need to buy a lens, cable, storage device or paid app to fix this. Transmission compression is a software and carrier matter.
