Use Cline’s OpenAI Compatible provider. Create an API key in OneHop, enter https://api.onehop.ai/v1 as Cline’s Base URL, enter the exact model identifier enabled for your OneHop account, save the settings, and run a small coding request. That sequence connects Cline in VS Code to OneHop without selecting the official OpenAI provider.
What you need before configuring Cline
The integration has five prerequisites. Having each one ready prevents most setup failures.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Visual Studio Code: Use the desktop VS Code installation where you want Cline to operate.
- The official Cline extension: Install the extension published by Autonomous Coding Agent, then open its panel. The provider controls are accessed from the panel’s settings gear.
- A OneHop account: You need an account with access to the OneHop API.
- A OneHop API key: Generate the key from OneHop’s API Keys area. Treat it as a password; anyone who obtains it may be able to consume your account’s API balance.
- An enabled model ID: OneHop must make the model available to your account. The model field accepts an identifier, not a marketing name or a description.
Cline’s OpenAI-compatible configuration is built around three values: a provider-specific Base URL, an API key, and a model ID. Its documentation explains that the official OpenAI URL should not be used when you are connecting a third-party compatible service. See the Cline OpenAI-compatible provider documentation for the provider’s current field names and behavior.

Connect OneHop to Cline: exact steps
1. Install and open Cline
- Open VS Code’s Extensions view.
- Search for Cline and install the official extension published by Autonomous Coding Agent.
- Open the Cline panel from the VS Code activity bar. If the panel is not visible, use VS Code’s command or view controls to reopen it.
Do not paste a OneHop key into a source file, terminal command that will be saved in shell history, or a project configuration committed to version control. The key belongs in Cline’s provider settings.

2. Create and secure a OneHop API key
- Sign in to your OneHop account.
- Open API Keys.
- Create a new key and copy it when OneHop displays it. The integration tutorial warns that the secret may only be shown in full at creation time, so store it in a password manager or another protected secret store before leaving the page.
- Keep the key out of repositories, screenshots, screen recordings, issue reports, source code, and browser-side applications. If you accidentally expose it, revoke it in OneHop and create a replacement.
Use a key belonging to the account whose model permissions and credit balance you intend to use. A key from a different account can authenticate successfully yet still fail when Cline requests a model that account cannot access.
3. Select the correct provider in Cline
- In the Cline panel, click the settings gear.
- Find API Provider.
- Select OpenAI Compatible.
This provider choice tells Cline to send OpenAI-style requests to a custom endpoint. Selecting an official OpenAI option instead can make Cline target the wrong service, even when the OneHop key itself is valid.
4. Enter OneHop’s Base URL
In Cline’s Base URL field, enter exactly:
https://api.onehop.ai/v1
Use the HTTPS scheme, the api subdomain, and the /v1 path. Do not add quotation marks, trailing spaces, a second version segment, or an endpoint intended for a different protocol. OneHop’s own client example uses this same base URL, and the integration tutorial identifies it as the value for Cline.
5. Add the API key
Paste the key into Cline’s API Key field. Paste only the key characters: do not include explanatory text, quotation marks, or leading and trailing spaces. If your password manager inserts a newline, remove it before saving.
6. Enter the exact model identifier
Fill in Cline’s Model field with the precise identifier shown as available in your OneHop account. Do not assume that a model name displayed in a blog post, a screenshot, or an older configuration is still enabled.
Model identifiers are literal strings. For example, the tutorial distinguishes openai/gpt-5.6-terra from gpt-5.6-terra; those are different values to an API even though they look related. The examples in the tutorial are illustrative, not a promise that either identifier is enabled for every account. Check OneHop’s current model list and copy the identifier exactly, including any provider prefix, punctuation, capitalization, and version suffix.

7. Save and make a small request
- Save the provider settings in Cline.
- Start a new Cline task in a small, non-sensitive workspace.
- Ask Cline to perform a bounded coding task, such as writing a short TypeScript string-reversal function and a test for it.
- Wait for a normal response before trying a larger repository-wide change.
A completed response demonstrates that Cline reached the configured endpoint, OneHop accepted the key, and the selected model was usable for that account. It does not prove that every model, tool capability, context size, or image feature is available; those depend on the selected model and its account permissions.

Use a request that is easy to inspect and inexpensive to repeat. For example, ask Cline:
Write a TypeScript function called reverseString(input: string): string.
Add a small test that checks reverseString('hello') returns 'olleh'.
Do not change any other files.
For a successful test, Cline should return an ordinary response and, if you allow edits, make only the requested small change. The important signal is that the request completes through OneHop; the particular implementation style is not a connectivity benchmark.
If the request fails, copy the error text before changing several fields at once. A stable error message makes it easier to identify whether the problem is authentication, model selection, endpoint reachability, or an account limit.
Why the OpenAI Compatible setting works
Cline’s compatible-provider flow sends requests using an OpenAI-style interface while allowing you to replace the destination with a provider-specific Base URL. Cline’s documentation identifies the Base URL, API Key, and Model ID as the main settings. Because OneHop is the destination in this setup, the official OpenAI endpoint is not part of the configuration.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →OneHop describes its service as a unified gateway that places many models behind one API and one key, with routing, billing, and failover handled on its backend. That is a vendor description of how the service is designed; it is not an independent measurement of availability or response quality. OneHop also says it supports OpenAI, Anthropic, and Vertex protocols. Cline uses the OpenAI-compatible path described above, so the fact that other protocols are supported does not change which provider you select in Cline.

The gateway arrangement can be useful when you want to change models without replacing the client integration. The trade-off is that the model ID, permissions, pricing, and service behavior are still controlled by the gateway account and the particular model you select.
Troubleshoot errors systematically
Change one variable at a time. The following table maps common symptoms to the most likely checks.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Cline reports that the request failed immediately | Malformed endpoint, missing key, extra whitespace, or invalid model value | Reopen the settings and compare the provider, Base URL, API key, and model ID character by character. Remove quotes and spaces. |
| Authentication or unauthorized error | The key is incomplete, revoked, copied with whitespace, or belongs to another account | Create or copy an active key again, paste only the secret, and confirm that the intended OneHop account owns it. |
| Model not found | The identifier is misspelled, uses the wrong provider prefix, or is not enabled for the account | Copy the current model ID from OneHop. Treat openai/gpt-5.6-terra and gpt-5.6-terra as different strings. |
| Connection or network error | The endpoint cannot be reached from the computer, or a firewall, proxy, VPN, or corporate rule blocks it | Check that the machine can reach the OneHop API host over HTTPS. Ask the network administrator whether outbound API traffic is filtered. |
| The request works but results are unexpectedly limited | Model parameters or capabilities differ from what you expected | Try another model that your account exposes and review its context window, output-token limit, image support, and computer-use or tool-calling capability. |
When the Base URL is the problem
Confirm that the value is the OneHop API base, not a documentation page, dashboard address, or a full operation path. Cline appends the provider’s request path to the Base URL. Adding an extra path segment can therefore produce a route that OneHop does not recognize. Re-enter the URL manually if you suspect an invisible character was pasted.
When authentication fails
Check the key in the OneHop account first. A key can be invalid because it was revoked, truncated during copying, or created under a different account. Paste it into Cline again without quotes. Never “test” a suspected secret by publishing it in an issue or sending it in a chat transcript; revoke it instead if exposure is possible.
When the model cannot be found
Model catalogs and account permissions can change. A previously working identifier may be retired, renamed, restricted, or unavailable after an account change. Use the exact current identifier supplied by OneHop, then save the Cline settings before retrying. If one model works and another does not, the connection is probably healthy and the remaining issue is model availability or permission.
When the network is blocked
Cline cannot authenticate if the computer never reaches the endpoint. Check local firewall logs, organization-wide egress rules, proxy requirements, and any security software that intercepts HTTPS. If you are on a managed network, provide the administrator with the hostname and port requirement rather than disabling security controls. A connection that works on one network but not another points to network policy, not necessarily to the API key.

When output quality or tool use differs
Connectivity and capability are separate questions. A model may accept text requests but have a smaller context window, lower output limit, no image support, or different tool-calling and computer-use behavior. Cline’s documentation recommends reviewing these model configuration parameters and trying another available model when results do not match your expectations. Record which model ID produced the behavior so you can make a meaningful comparison.

Model selection and account permissions
The model field is the most common source of confusion because human-readable names and API identifiers are not interchangeable. Treat the identifier as an exact address:
- Copy it from the current OneHop account interface rather than relying on a remembered value.
- Preserve provider prefixes such as
openai/when OneHop includes them. - Preserve punctuation, hyphens, periods, capitalization, and version text.
- Confirm that the account behind the API key is permitted to use that model.
- After changing the model, run the same small test request so you can distinguish a model change from a general connection problem.
Do not infer availability from OneHop’s broad description of offering hundreds of models. That phrase describes the gateway’s overall catalog; it does not guarantee that every model is active for every account, plan, region, or date. Your account’s model list is the authoritative source for the value Cline should send.

An API key is a credential tied to usage and billing. Use the following operating rules:
- Store the key in a password manager or approved secret store.
- Do not commit it to Git, paste it into project files, or include it in screenshots, recordings, support tickets, or issue reports.
- Do not place it in a frontend application, where visitors could extract it from browser code.
- Use separate keys for separate people or environments when OneHop provides that control, so a leaked credential can be revoked without disrupting every user.
- Revoke and replace a key immediately after suspected exposure.
- Review account usage after testing, especially if a task unexpectedly loops or submits a large context.
Cline can read substantial project context when you authorize it to inspect files. Begin with a disposable or minimal workspace and approve file changes deliberately. A successful API connection does not remove the need to review generated code or protect confidential source material.

Your Cline test consumes the selected model’s usage. A short request is a sensible first check because it limits the cost while you confirm that the endpoint, key, and model are correct. Larger prompts, long repository context, repeated retries, and models with different rates can consume credits at different speeds. If usage appears unexpected, stop the task, inspect the OneHop account usage view, and revoke any key you believe another process is using.
Changing models without rebuilding the integration
Once the OneHop provider works, changing models normally means editing only Cline’s Model field:
- Open the Cline settings gear.
- Leave API Provider set to OpenAI Compatible.
- Keep the existing OneHop endpoint and key unless you intentionally changed accounts.
- Replace the model value with another exact identifier currently enabled for the account.
- Save and repeat the small TypeScript test.
If the new value fails while the previous one still works, restore the known-good model and verify the new identifier or account permission. Do not rotate the key or alter the endpoint unnecessarily; those changes make diagnosis harder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA repeatable diagnostic checklist
- Is the official Cline extension installed and its panel open?
- Is API Provider set to OpenAI Compatible?
- Does the Base URL contain the HTTPS OneHop API address with the
/v1path and no extra characters? - Was the key copied completely, without quotes or spaces, and is it still active?
- Does the key belong to the OneHop account whose model list you checked?
- Does the Model field match an exact identifier currently enabled for that account?
- Can the computer reach the endpoint through its firewall, proxy, and network policy?
- Did a small, bounded coding task complete before you attempted a larger change?
- If output is unexpected, did you check context size, output limits, image support, and tool-calling capability for that model?
When all checks pass, keep the working configuration documented privately—without recording the secret itself. Note the provider choice, the account owner, and the model identifier you verified, then revisit the model list and billing terms when you next change accounts or projects.
