These checks help you avoid repeating steps and speed up diagnosis.
- Note the exact behavior: does it crash instantly on launch, during sign-in, or when you open a specific folder/file?
- Check Android version: open Settings > About phone and note the version (e.g., Android 13, Android 14).
- Confirm OneDrive updates: open the Play Store and search for Microsoft OneDrive to see if an update is available.
- Quick storage check: open Settings > Storage and verify you have a few hundred MB free at minimum. For heavy sync, aim for at least 1–2 GB.
7 Quick Fixes When OneDrive Keeps Crashing on Android
Start with these. Most “crash on launch” issues resolve here.
1) Force Stop OneDrive, Then Reopen
This clears the current app process and can stop a temporary crash loop caused by a stuck background task.

2) Update OneDrive from Google Play
An outdated build can crash due to authentication or sync API changes. A newer build often contains crash fixes and sign-in stability improvements.
Open Play Store > search Microsoft OneDrive > tap Update if available. After updating, reboot once and test.
3) Clear OneDrive Cache (Not Data Yet)
Clearing cache removes local UI/state files that can corrupt and cause crashes without fully logging you out.

4) Repair the Sign-In State by Removing and Re-adding the Account
If OneDrive crashes right after opening, the saved session might be broken (for example, after a password change or conditional access policy update).
Inside OneDrive: tap your profile icon > Settings > locate Account (or Manage accounts) > remove the account. Then add it again via Sign in.
If you don’t see a remove option, do the account removal from Android settings: Settings > Accounts > select your Microsoft account > remove, then sign back into OneDrive.
5) Check Permissions: Files and Media + Background Data
On modern Android versions, missing or revoked permissions can trigger crashes when OneDrive tries to access storage.
Go to Settings > Apps > OneDrive > Permissions. Verify access for Files and media (or similarly named storage access) is allowed. Also check Data usage and ensure background data is enabled.
Then test OneDrive again.
6) Turn Off Battery Optimization for OneDrive
A battery-restricted OneDrive can fail during sync or file operations, which may lead to crashes or repeated restart loops.
Go to Settings > Apps > OneDrive > Battery (or Battery usage) > choose Unrestricted (wording varies by brand). If you can’t find it, search within Settings for battery optimization and set OneDrive to Don’t optimize.
7) Reinstall OneDrive (Clean Install)
If cache/data corruption is deeper than the quick fix can handle, a reinstall often resolves it.

Fixes If the App Still Crashes After the Quick Steps
If OneDrive still crashes after all 7 quick fixes, switch to deeper diagnostics. These targets are common on Android 12–14.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Clear OneDrive Data (Last Resort Before Reinstall)
Clearing data resets OneDrive’s local state and can fix crash loops caused by corrupted sync metadata. It may log you out.
Go to Settings > Apps > OneDrive > Storage > tap Clear data. Then open OneDrive and sign in again.
Update Android System Components (WebView + Play Services)
OneDrive sign-in relies on Android components like Android System WebView and Google Play services. If they’re outdated or broken, OneDrive may crash during authentication.
Open Play Store and update:
- Android System WebView
- Google Play services
- Google Play Store
After updating, restart and test OneDrive.
Disable VPN / Proxy / Private DNS
Some VPNs, ad-block DNS, or proxy setups break Microsoft authentication and file listing calls, causing unstable app behavior.
Temporarily turn off any VPN. Then check Settings > Network & internet > Private DNS and set it to Off or Automatic. Try again.

Try Another Network (Same Account, Different Connection)
Switch to a different Wi‑Fi network or use mobile data. If OneDrive works on one network, the crash is likely network-related (captive portal, firewall rules, DNS filtering).
Check for Android Web Access Restrictions or Work Profile Policies
If you’re using a work/school account and a managed device, policies can restrict background sync, file access, or OAuth flows. That can show up as app crashes even when the app is updated.
Check whether your device has a Work profile (Settings > Users & accounts). If the crash happens only in the work profile, contact IT or confirm the Microsoft policies allowed for OneDrive.
What If OneDrive Crashes Only on Wi‑Fi or Only on Mobile Data?
This pattern points to network policy, DNS, or connectivity differences rather than the app itself.
If It Crashes on Wi‑Fi
Try:
- Forget the Wi‑Fi network: Settings > Wi‑Fi > tap the network name > Forget, then reconnect.
- Turn off “Wi‑Fi calling” temporarily (some routers behave badly with certain configurations).
- Disable any router-level ad blocking (if you control the router).
- Switch DNS: set Private DNS to Automatic.
If It Crashes on Mobile Data
Try:
- Disable mobile data restrictions for the app: Settings > Apps > OneDrive > Data usage > allow background data.
- Turn off Data Saver / restrict background data if enabled.
- Toggle Airplane mode for 20 seconds, then re-enable data.
- Check SIM/APN configuration through your carrier if only one SIM triggers the issue.
When a Bug Is the Real Problem: Roll Back or Wait
Occasionally, a new OneDrive update introduces a crash on specific Android versions or devices. When this happens, the fastest path is to confirm whether you’re on the latest version and whether others report the same behavior.
Check Your OneDrive Version
Open OneDrive > Settings and look for the app version. If you can’t find it, check it in Play Store via the app listing or Android app info.
Rollback Options (With Caution)
Android doesn’t provide an official “rollback” button in most cases. You can reinstall an older APK, but only do it if you trust the source. Microsoft packages are best obtained through reputable channels (for most users, the safer route is waiting for a hotfix update).

Prevent Future Crashes
Once OneDrive is stable, keep it that way. Crashes often return when the environment changes.
- Keep OneDrive, Android System WebView, and Google Play services updated.
- Maintain at least 1–2 GB free storage for syncing-heavy use.
- Avoid aggressive battery optimization for OneDrive.
- After major Android updates (Android 14 upgrades, for example), expect to re-check permissions for storage and background data.
- If you use a VPN or Private DNS, test OneDrive once after every network or app update.
Common Mistakes That Make Crashes Worse
- Clearing OneDrive data repeatedly without checking storage/permissions—this can reset state but not solve the underlying cause.
- Ignoring “Files and media” permissions on Android 13+—OneDrive may crash when it can’t access folders.
- Turning battery optimization back on after you set OneDrive to unrestricted.
- Testing with only one problematic file and concluding the app is broken—try a different folder to confirm.
- Overlooking account/session changes (password resets). Sign-in state issues can masquerade as app crashes.
FAQs
Why does OneDrive crash as soon as I open it?
The most common reasons are a corrupted cache, a broken sign-in session, or missing WebView/Play services components. Try Force stop, then Clear cache, then verify Android System WebView and Play services updates.
Will clearing OneDrive data delete my files?
No. Clearing data resets the app’s local state on your phone. Your OneDrive files are stored in your account (cloud). After clearing data, you may need to sign in again and reconfigure sync/offline folders.
Does reinstalling OneDrive fix crashes?
Often it does, especially when cache corruption or a bad local state is the cause. If reinstalling doesn’t help, the problem is more likely network-related, permissions-related, or tied to a device/system component.
OneDrive works on Wi‑Fi but crashes on mobile data. What’s happening?
This usually points to DNS filtering, carrier/network restrictions, background data settings, or Data Saver blocking OneDrive. Allow background data for OneDrive and test with Private DNS set to Automatic.
How do I report a persistent crash to Microsoft?
Open OneDrive, go to Settings, and look for a feedback or help option. On Android, you can also capture the crash behavior by noting when it happens (launch vs sign-in vs opening a folder). If you have access to Android’s bug report feature, include the timestamp and steps.
Bottom Line
If OneDrive keeps crashing on Android, your fastest win is usually a combo of Force stop, an update from Play Store, and clearing OneDrive cache. Those three steps resolve the majority of crash loops caused by corrupted local state or outdated app builds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf it’s still unstable, move to the deeper checks: permissions (Files and media + background data), battery optimization, updating WebView/Play services, and testing networks/VPN settings. Follow the order above and you’ll narrow the cause quickly—without guesswork.
