How to reboot/restart your Google Pixel

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rebooting a Google Pixel can fix a surprising range of problems—stuck apps, delayed touch input, Wi‑Fi glitches, Bluetooth dropouts, and sluggish performance after an update. It’s also one of the fastest “first actions” to try before you troubleshoot deeper.

This guide covers every practical restart path for Pixel, from a normal reboot to a force restart when the phone is frozen, plus Safe Mode and Recovery Mode when you need more control.

What rebooting actually does (and what it doesn’t)

A reboot restarts Android and Pixel’s system services. That clears temporary states in memory, refreshes drivers (display, radio, sensors), and reloads system apps.

  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
  • Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
  • Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
  • Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]

It does not: erase your personal data, reset accounts, or uninstall apps by itself. If you’re seeing persistent issues, you’ll likely need Safe Mode or Recovery Mode instead.

Before you restart: quick checks

Two quick checks can save time and prevent you from choosing the wrong fix.

  • Confirm the phone is powered. If the display is black, try a button press and check for vibration, the charging icon, or a notification LED (if your model has one).
  • Check charging and battery level. If the Pixel is at 0% or has been dead for a while, plug in for at least 10–15 minutes before trying a restart. Use the original or a known-good USB-C cable.

Method 1: Normal reboot using the Power menu

This is the standard, safest restart option. It works when your Pixel is responsive enough to open the Power menu.

  1. Press and hold the Power button (usually on the right side).
  2. When the Power menu appears, tap Restart.
  3. Confirm by tapping Restart again (wording may vary slightly by Android version).
  4. Wait for the phone to shut down and boot back up. The Google logo typically appears, then you’ll reach your lock screen.

Method 2: Restart via Settings

If the Power menu is missing or you prefer a menu-based approach, you can restart from Settings on many Pixel models and Android versions.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Scroll to System (sometimes “System & updates”).
  3. Tap Restart or Reset options, then look for Restart if it’s nested (labels vary by Android version).
  4. Follow the confirmation prompt to restart.

If you can’t find the Restart option, use Method 1 or Method 3.

Method 3: Force restart (when the screen is frozen)

Use a force restart when your Pixel is unresponsive—touch doesn’t work, apps hang hard, or the phone won’t bring up the Power menu.

Force restart steps (Pixel phones)

  1. Press and hold the Power button for about 20–30 seconds.
  2. If you see the restart/power menu, keep holding until the screen goes black.
  3. Release the buttons after the device restarts or when you see the Google logo.

If your Pixel is still stuck

  • Try again with a slightly longer hold (up to ~40 seconds).
  • Plug in the charger and attempt the force restart after ~5–10 minutes, especially if the battery is near empty.

Method 4: Restart into Safe Mode (to troubleshoot bad apps)

Safe Mode starts Android with third-party apps disabled. It’s ideal when a new app, accessibility tool, launcher, or system tweak is causing boot issues, crashes, or runaway battery drain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to boot Safe Mode

  1. Press and hold the Power button until you see the Power menu.
  2. Press and hold Power off (or Restart, depending on your menu) until the Safe Mode prompt appears.
  3. Tap OK to reboot into Safe Mode.
  4. Wait for the phone to finish booting. You should see “Safe mode” text on-screen.

What to do once you’re in Safe Mode

  • If the problem disappears in Safe Mode, uninstall the most recently installed or suspicious apps.
  • Check battery usage in Settings > Battery (wording varies) and look for unusual background activity.
  • Review device admin permissions and accessibility services if the issue involved taps, overlays, or automated actions.

Exit Safe Mode

In most cases, you can exit Safe Mode by restarting normally (Power menu > Restart). If you keep entering Safe Mode, you may have a stuck hardware button—check the Power or Volume keys for physical obstruction.

Method 5: Recovery Mode options (advanced)

Recovery Mode is for deeper troubleshooting when the phone won’t boot normally or is stuck after an update. It’s more disruptive than a standard restart, so use it only when normal options don’t work.

Warning: Some Recovery Mode actions can erase data (especially “Factory reset”). If you care about the data, prioritize backups before doing destructive steps.

Enter Recovery Mode

Pixel button timing varies slightly by generation, but the general pattern is consistent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Power off the Pixel completely.
  2. Press and hold Power and Volume Down together.
  3. Keep holding until you see the boot options screen or the Recovery indicator.
  4. Use Volume buttons to navigate and Power to select.

  • Reboot system now — the closest thing to a “restart” inside Recovery.
  • Apply update from ADB — if you’re using a computer to push an update.
  • Wipe cache partition — clears temporary system cache (non-destructive on data).
  • Factory data reset — erases apps and personal data.

Wipe cache partition (non-destructive)

If the Pixel is booting but behaving oddly after an update, “Wipe cache partition” is often safer than a factory reset.

  1. In Recovery Mode, select Wipe cache partition.
  2. Confirm when prompted.
  3. Choose Reboot system now.

Factory data reset (destructive)

Only use this if you’ve exhausted other methods and you can’t recover the device normally. Make sure backups (Google Account, photos, and any critical files) are handled if possible.

  1. Select Factory data reset.
  2. Confirm the wipe.
  3. Restart and set up the Pixel again.

When your Pixel won’t reboot: troubleshooting by symptoms

Different failures call for different fixes. Use the symptom that matches your device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Symptom: Power menu won’t open

  • Try a force restart by holding the Power button ~20–30 seconds.
  • If it still won’t respond, plug in the charger and try again after 10–15 minutes.

Symptom: Pixel reboots but gets stuck on the Google logo

  • Wait 5–10 minutes—some updates take longer than expected.
  • Force restart once, then try booting into Safe Mode to rule out an app problem.
  • If it still loops, consider Recovery Mode and try Wipe cache partition.

Symptom: Boot loop right after a system update

  • Let it attempt a couple of full boot cycles if it’s actively updating.
  • If it loops repeatedly, use Recovery Mode and try cache wipe.
  • If that fails, you may need a recovery-based update (ADB) or a factory reset.

Symptom: Touch won’t respond but the phone still seems on

  • Use force restart (Power hold) since touch isn’t reliable.
  • After it boots, check for accessibility settings, screen overlay apps, or recently installed launchers.

Symptom: The Pixel won’t power off or won’t restart

  • Hold the Power button for a longer window (up to ~40 seconds).
  • Check for stuck buttons. Remove any case that might press the Power/Volume keys.

Symptom: Reboot keeps fixing it temporarily

  • Boot into Safe Mode and identify the offending app.
  • Update apps and Pixel system components when you’re back in normal mode.
  • If the issue started after a specific app update, uninstall that app and reinstall from the latest stable version.

Common mistakes that make things worse

  • Restarting repeatedly in a loop. If it won’t boot, switch to Safe Mode or Recovery rather than forcing it over and over.
  • Using destructive options too soon. A factory reset is often unnecessary if a cache wipe or Safe Mode resolves the issue.
  • Ignoring stuck buttons. If your Pixel keeps entering Safe Mode or failing to respond, check whether a case, debris, or hardware wear is pressing Volume/Power.
  • Forgetting charging. A low battery can cause “restart succeeded but boot failed.” Charge first.

FAQs

Will restarting my Pixel delete photos or apps?

No. A standard reboot or force restart doesn’t erase your data. Only Recovery Mode “Factory data reset” (or similar) wipes data.

How long should I wait if the Pixel is stuck on the Google logo?

Give it up to 10 minutes, especially after an update. If it loops or you never reach the lock screen after that window, switch tactics (Safe Mode or Recovery Mode cache wipe).

What if I can’t find the Restart option in Settings?

Use Method 1 (Power menu > Restart) or Method 3 (force restart). Some Android builds hide or relocate restart controls.

Does Safe Mode disable system updates?

Safe Mode mainly disables third-party apps. System components still run, but your ability to troubleshoot app-related crashes improves because suspect apps are off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is force restarting harmful?

It’s generally safe for normal troubleshooting. Still, if you’re writing large files or installing updates, force restarting repeatedly isn’t ideal. Use it to regain control, then identify the root cause.

When should I contact support or bring it in?

If your Pixel can’t complete a boot after Recovery Mode attempts, shows hardware symptoms (buttons stuck, screen not responding consistently), or the issue started after physical damage, support or a service center is the right next step.

Bottom Line

For most Pixel problems, a normal reboot (Power menu > Restart) fixes the glitch quickly without risk. When the phone is frozen, a force restart restores control; when a specific app seems to be the culprit, Safe Mode makes it easy to isolate the problem.

If boot issues persist—especially after updates—Recovery Mode options like “Wipe cache partition” are the practical next step. Use factory reset only when you’ve run out of non-destructive options.
