Googlebooks reportedly run the full desktop version of Chrome, including support for Chrome extensions—addressing a limitation TechRadar writer Matt Hanson says bothered him about Chrome OS. That is a meaningful change for people who depend on browser add-ons, but the report is a launch-event account, not proof that every extension works or that every Chromebook user shared the same complaint.
What issue is Googlebook OS reported to fix?
In a September 21, 2026 report, TechRadar’s Matt Hanson says Chrome OS’s browser felt to him like a mobile version and did not meet his needs for extensions. After trying five Googlebooks, he reported that Chrome on Googlebook OS was the full desktop browser and that extensions were supported. Read the TechRadar report.

The distinction matters if your workflow depends on browser add-ons: the reported change is about using desktop Chrome and its extension ecosystem on a laptop, rather than being limited to the browser experience Hanson describes on Chrome OS. The article does not name extensions he tried, test compatibility, or establish that every extension works correctly.

TechRadar describes Googlebook OS as a new desktop operating system combining characteristics of Chrome OS and Android, built on Linux. The same report mentions Android apps, continuity between a phone and laptop, a file browser with natural-language search, Linux containers, and Gemini features. Those are reported elements of the platform, not confirmation that each feature is available on every model, in every region, or in every configuration.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Google Senior Director of Laptops and Tablets Alex Kuscher described the idea as “a laptop that feels familiar to Android users,” according to the report. That positions Googlebooks as laptops intended to connect Android use with a desktop environment; it does not establish how well any particular phone or app works with them.
Which Googlebooks were named, and what did the report say about them?
TechRadar identifies five models in the first wave. It characterizes Googlebooks as a premium tier above budget Chromebooks and Chromebook Plus, rather than a replacement for those lines.

What the report does—and does not—establish
The clearest takeaway is the reported desktop Chrome experience with extension support. The evidence is narrower than a compatibility guarantee: Hanson recounts what he encountered while trying Googlebooks at a launch event, and the article does not provide benchmark results, a list of tested extensions, or a model-by-model account of the experience.
That makes the reported change especially relevant to people who have avoided Chrome OS because they wanted desktop Chrome extensions. Whether Googlebook OS suits a particular workflow still depends on the extensions, apps, device integrations, and configuration that person needs; the report does not test those combinations.
