What iPhone Handoff does
iPhone Handoff shares a mobile number between two iPhones. When you unlock the iPhone you want to use, that phone becomes active on the shared number and the other iPhone becomes inactive. Apple’s setup guidance describes the confirmation as “Switched to this iPhone.” This is a switch between phones, not simultaneous active service on both.

Which carriers support iPhone Handoff?
Apple’s support page names these participating carriers:

These are confirmed examples in Apple’s guidance, not a complete worldwide carrier list. Apple says availability depends on participating carriers and supported countries or regions. Check with your carrier for current availability, account or plan eligibility, and fees before setup. Apple warns that carrier fees might apply but does not state a price.

What you need before setup
Apple lists the following requirements for both iPhones and the shared number:
- Two iPhones running iOS 27 or later.
- Wi-Fi access.
- The same Apple Account on both phones.
- Messages in iCloud enabled.
- iMessage and FaceTime signed in with that Apple Account.
- An eSIM from a participating carrier.
Apple’s guidance specifies an iOS version, not a minimum iPhone model. Confirm that each model is compatible with Apple or your carrier rather than assuming that every iPhone able to run the required software qualifies.

How to set it up
You can start during setup of a new iPhone or add the second phone later. For setup in Settings, follow these steps on the iPhone you want to add, then complete the prompts on both phones:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Cellular.
- Tap Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM.
- Choose Use Number on This iPhone and Another, then follow the on-screen instructions.
- Choose which iPhone will be the main iPhone when prompted.
Screen labels can vary with software version or carrier provisioning, so follow the prompts shown on your devices. After setup, unlock the iPhone you want active to switch the shared number to it.

What does not switch between the phones?
- Carrier controls: Call forwarding, Caller ID and carrier account management can be managed only on the designated main iPhone.
- Apple Watch pairing: The watch pairing does not follow the active-phone switch. Pair the watch with the iPhone you use most often.
- Third-party app data: Apps sync according to their own behavior, so Handoff does not guarantee identical app state on both phones.
iPhone Handoff is not Apple’s other “Handoff” feature
Apple also uses the name Handoff for continuing an activity—such as work in an app—from one Apple device on another. That feature has different requirements and does not give two iPhones one shared mobile number. See Apple’s guide to handing off tasks between devices.
Calls on other Apple devices and Wi-Fi Calling are separate carrier-dependent arrangements, not proof that a carrier supports iPhone Handoff or that two iPhones share an active eSIM. Apple explains its separate Wi-Fi Calling feature.
