Both list active noise cancellation (ANC), Transparency, and an IP57 rating. Those specifications can help you choose what to compare on a run, but they cannot verify how either model fit or performed over 22 miles.
What this 22-mile comparison can—and cannot—establish
The title describes a 22-mile run and promises three likes and two misses. The available evidence does not establish that the run took place or document the runner’s reactions. Without confirmed firsthand notes, it would be misleading to invent fit impressions, battery readings, sound quality, or a list of five takeaways.

What can be compared reliably here is Apple’s published feature information. It identifies differences that matter to runners, but it does not say which earbuds stay in a particular person’s ears, feel comfortable over a long distance, or sound better while running.
How the fit designs differ
AirPods Pro 3: five silicone tip sizes
Apple lists silicone ear tips in XXS, XS, S, M, and L for AirPods Pro 3. Multiple sizes give you options to try, but the specification alone cannot predict whether a tip will seal well or remain secure during your stride. Apple’s AirPods Pro 3 technical specifications

AirPods 5: open fit
AirPods 5 have an open-fit design in Apple’s specifications rather than interchangeable silicone tips. That is a different fit approach, not proof that they will be less or more secure for you. Individual ear shape and preference matter, and the product specifications do not report running-retention results. Apple’s AirPods 5 technical specifications
Battery life: compare the right case version
Apple’s figures are “up to” listening estimates, not independent test results or a prediction of exact runtime on a 22-mile route. For AirPods 5, the stated ANC runtime changes with the case version; the Pro 3 figure changes when workout heart-rate sensing is active.

Workout heart-rate sensing
Apple lists a heart-rate sensor for workouts in AirPods Pro 3. Its specifications for AirPods 5 do not list that sensor. That distinguishes the published feature sets; it does not establish that heart-rate sensing was used during the run described in the title. AirPods Pro 3 specifications · AirPods 5 specifications

ANC and Transparency
Apple lists both ANC and Transparency for both models. The feature lists do not establish which model cancels more noise, sounds more natural in Transparency mode, or is safer in a particular running environment. Choose noise settings with your route and surroundings in mind rather than treating a shared feature label as a performance ranking.
Sweat and water resistance
Apple rates both AirPods 5 and their case IP57 for dust, sweat, and water resistance, and describes them as intended for non-water sports and exercise. Apple says the rating is based on controlled laboratory conditions; it is not a promise that either product is waterproof or that its resistance will last unchanged. Apple warns that resistance may decrease with normal wear and says not to charge AirPods 5 when wet. Apple’s AirPods 5 support specifications · Apple’s AirPods Pro 3 support specifications

Which model makes more sense for your runs?
- Prioritize adjustable tip options: AirPods Pro 3 include five silicone tip sizes. Their presence offers choices, not a guaranteed fit.
- Want an open-fit design: AirPods 5 use that form. Try them for your own comfort and retention rather than relying on the specification to predict how they’ll behave at running pace.
- Need longer stated ANC listening time: Apple’s listed maximum is up to 8 hours for Pro 3, or up to 6.5 hours with workout heart-rate sensing. AirPods 5 list up to 4 hours with the standard case or up to 5 with the Wireless Charging Case.
- Want a listed workout heart-rate sensor: Apple specifies one for Pro 3; its AirPods 5 specification list does not include one.
- Care about charging-case battery totals: Apple lists up to 20 hours with the standard AirPods 5 case, up to 22 with the Wireless Charging Case, and up to 24 hours for Pro 3 with ANC enabled.
- Run in varied surroundings: Both models list ANC and Transparency. The published specifications do not establish which mode or model is best for your route.
Apple’s figures are useful for narrowing the choice, but a real answer to whether AirPods 5 stayed put—or which model the runner preferred over 22 miles—requires that runner’s confirmed observations.
