To show the same program on two TVs, connect the cable box’s HDMI output to a compatible 1-in-2-out HDMI splitter, then run an HDMI cable from each splitter output to a TV. Both screens will show the channel selected on the box. If you want each TV to show a different channel, you generally need another provider-authorized box or a supported multi-room service.
Connect one cable box to two TVs showing the same program
Most current cable boxes connect to a TV over HDMI. Samsung’s instructions use the box’s HDMI OUT port and a TV HDMI input; after connecting, select that HDMI source on the TV. Samsung’s cable-box connection guide covers the basic setup.

- Check that the cable box has an HDMI OUT port and that each TV has an available HDMI input.
- Connect the cable box’s HDMI OUT to the HDMI IN on a compatible 1-in-2-out HDMI splitter.
- Connect one HDMI cable from each splitter output to a separate TV.
- Turn on the cable box, splitter and TVs. On each TV, select the HDMI input connected to the splitter.
- Change channels with the cable box remote. Both TVs display the box’s selected program and respond to the same channel selection.
Check the splitter’s supported resolution and HDCP version against the box, both TVs and the content you plan to watch. Roku notes that when a device requires HDCP 2.2, the splitter and every other device in the HDMI path must also support it. Roku’s HDCP 2.2 guidance explains this requirement.
Why a coax splitter does not duplicate the box’s picture
A coax splitter shares the incoming cable feed from a wall outlet among equipment. The wall cable connects to the splitter’s input; cables to devices connect to its outputs. It does not split the cable box’s decoded HDMI program across two TVs. See Xfinity’s cable-splitter instructions and Cogeco’s splitter guide for that incoming-feed arrangement.

A provider-specific exception appears in Mobius Communications’ 2020 guide for an Amino set-top box: it describes connecting one TV through HDMI, component or composite and a second TV through coax tuned to channel 3. It says both TVs will be on the same channel. This is a model- and provider-specific legacy setup, not a general method for modern cable boxes. Mobius Communications’ Amino setup guide gives its equipment-specific instructions.
When each TV needs a different channel
An HDMI splitter sends the same box output to both screens; it does not provide a second independently tuned channel. Ask your provider whether your account and service area support an additional authorized set-top box, a paired mini box, multi-room DVR or provider app. For example, Verizon’s Fios TV One support describes a paired Mini and multi-room DVR service, while Virgin Media’s multi-room guidance discusses additional Stream or Mini boxes. Virgin Media notes that some content may be restricted from room-to-room viewing.

Before choosing a setup, confirm whether you need identical or independent viewing, whether the provider supports extra equipment at your address, and whether all devices support the intended resolution and HDCP version. The cited provider pages do not establish universal prices or compatibility for every cable-box model.
Troubleshoot a blank screen or HDCP error
Intermediate devices or unsupported formats can interrupt a protected HDMI signal. Xfinity lists adapters, receivers, hubs, switches, scalers and extenders as possible causes of HDCP trouble, and recommends testing with a direct connection. Xfinity’s HDCP troubleshooting guide also suggests trying a different or shorter HDMI cable.

- Connect the cable box directly to one TV, bypassing the splitter and other intermediate devices. If that works, reconnect components one at a time to identify the problem.
- Check that the splitter, both TV inputs and any receiver or soundbar support the resolution and HDCP version required by the content.
- Verify that both TVs accept the box’s selected output resolution and that each TV is set to the correct HDMI input.
- Try a different HDMI cable, or a shorter cable if the current run is long.
- If the direct connection also fails, consult the cable box and TV instructions or contact the provider about the box’s output settings and protected-channel support.
For 4K protected content, Verizon specifies a 4K TV, 4K-capable intermediate equipment connected through 4K-enabled ports, an HDMI cable supporting HDCP 2.2 and a set-top box set to 2160p. These are requirements for that setup, not a guarantee that every splitter will work with every box and display.
