COVID-19 remains in circulation, with wastewater signals rising in recent weeks even as reported hospitalizations fell from a mid-September high.
Is flu going around in Colorado?
Yes. Colorado State Epidemiologist Dr. Rachel Herlihy said flu indicators—including test positivity, emergency-department visits and hospitalizations—were increasing. CPR reported 46 flu hospitalizations in the latest week it discussed, compared with one in late August. The figures show a rise from a small baseline; they do not establish the risk to any particular person. CPR News, October 11, 2026

Herlihy described the trend this way: “The numbers are still small, but do demonstrate that influenza is here and is increasing.”

COVID-19 was still circulating in Colorado, but its indicators were mixed. CPR reported that wastewater signals had increased across nearly all utilities tracking the virus in recent weeks. Reported COVID-19 hospitalizations, however, had declined after reaching 43 in mid-September—the highest level since March, according to CPR. Herlihy said the pattern appeared to be stabilizing.

Wastewater surveillance can indicate that a virus is present in a community, but an increase does not guarantee a coming surge in cases or hospitalizations. It should not be read as equivalent to a hospitalization count.
How to read the flu and COVID-19 trends together
| Virus | Recent direction in Colorado | Reported measure |
|---|---|---|
| Flu | Increasing from a low baseline | CPR reported 46 hospitalizations in the latest week discussed, up from one in late August; test positivity and emergency-department visits were also rising. |
| COVID-19 | Mixed signals | Wastewater signals had risen in recent weeks, while hospitalizations had fallen from 43 in mid-September. |
These measures describe different parts of the picture, not directly comparable case totals. A rising flu trend can coexist with low overall respiratory-virus activity when levels are still low. CPR described Colorado’s overall viral respiratory activity as low in its October 11 report. The state’s respiratory-virus data service says it covers March 2020 to the present and updates weekly on Wednesdays; the figures above are the values CPR reported, not a separate reading of live dashboard records. Why the prior flu season matters
The rise is beginning against a season in which flu caused substantial illness in Colorado. CPR reported more than 5,900 flu hospitalizations in the prior season, including nearly 1,200 among children. It also described approximately 800 hospitalizations in the week between Christmas and New Year’s as a record. Those are prior-season figures, not a forecast for this season.

What the national data adds—and what it cannot tell Coloradans
CDC’s national respiratory summary, updated October 9, 2026, said seasonal flu was increasing in many areas but remained low nationally; COVID-19 was declining nationally while still elevated in some regions; and RSV was very low in most areas. National patterns provide context, but they do not replace Colorado’s state-level indicators. CDC Respiratory Illnesses Data Channel

Should you get a flu or COVID-19 vaccine now?
Herlihy encouraged Coloradans to receive respiratory-virus vaccines ahead of the seasonal peak, noting that full protection takes a couple of weeks. “This is really the optimum time to start receiving these vaccines,” she said. CDC states that annual flu and COVID-19 vaccines are available and advises people to consult a healthcare professional about which vaccines are recommended for them. This is general seasonal guidance, not individual medical advice.
